Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Isn't this the part that they're supposed to be predicting? :p

Yes, but the models they use are all telling them different things are going to happen. I took meteorology in high school and, especially here in New England, it isn't an exact science. That was 25 years ago and even though the technology has improved it's still incredibly difficult to forecast. The first storm in this string was supposed to bury NYC and missed by about 30 miles. Yesterday's was off by less than 100 miles. That's actually very good when you consider everything that has to happen. If the air pressure is off by a few millibars and that delays a low pressure system by a few hours that makes all the difference between the 5" of snow we got and the 24" we were supposed to get.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

West Michigan didn't get dumped on yesterday, but it's +5F with a windchill of -9F. The wind chill warning is supposed to last all day today.

Its been that cold and then some over here around AA as well. Yesterday was a pain in the butt to get around with the wind blowing and drifting snow. We had a heavy dusting out this way, but it was kinda hard to tell how much with it drifting. US-12 between Saline and Clinton would get really interesting with you would have a stretch that was out of the wind and it was all bright and sunny, and then you would go past that line of trees by an open field and you would be driving into a white out. :p

Hmmmm
@pgcps: Status for 2/18/15: All Schools and offices will open on a TWO-HOUR delay. Barack Obama Elementary ONLY is closed due to a heating issue.

No hot air at BO Elementary?

Construction of the gas line to the school is awaiting regulatory approval.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

The coverage of the East coast "blizzard" is getting comically bad. Some areas are getting hammered but man...

Once I was driving down a street in Illinois and it was raining on the south side of the street and it was dry on the north side of the street. A small shift in a minor variable could move that line a few miles, easily.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

DC is slated for some white stuff Monday night - Tuesday AM. 5" will shut down your government for a day or so.

So relax, kick back you're recliner and watch the hysterical news shows.

Or maybe you get Jim Cantore scream "THUNDERSNOW!" on your front lawn? Ahhh the thrill of ratings!

That guy REALLY likes thundersnow...

Meanwhile, snowfall just means this private sector guy works from home that day... if only they made our federally employed friends do the same

For some jobs, yes, but I wouldn't want a Pentagon contractor working on a laptop computer from home. The level of security, while good for the type of work I do, would just not be there for a contractor that could be dealing in national security materials.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

More cold. I'll trade BOS's snow for our cold. Yes, I'm serious.
Don't blame you. The problem we've had though, is that the temps have not been Minnesota low, but they've been low enough (teens and single digits) that the snow isn't going away and the banks aren't settling much. I'm reminded of the saying I heard when my sister was in northern Maine. "The snow you see in April is the same snow that fell in November".

I can agree with that. My post was half in jest, but I was also thinking more along the lines of your Capitol Hill staffers and the like

No. Maine doesn't have the snow like we do on the coast. No where near as much. Fields have been blown bare in spots up there. Sure is cold though.

The cold is what I was talking about. The snow that fell never melted. Might get blown away as you say, but didn't melt. I'm talking about the part of Maine that's actually farther north than Quebec City.

Right now, what we need is a good melt so that the banks would get a little lower. Of course a good melt would be a disaster for some homes I've seen, because the ice dams will mean that the melting water will end up dripping through the ceiling. I drove by one house today that had four foot icicles along the whole length of the roofline, with pretty much all the snow that's fallen in the last two weeks still on the roof. That's a lot of water.

Generally No Maine has way more snow than we do. 2008?? they had 230 inches or so in Caribou area, it was unreal driving around up there. The banks high enough so it seemed like you were in a tunnel.
