Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Snowblower crapped out last night. It's the transmission linkage, and not something I want to attempt to fix myself. Needless to say snowblower repair ain't something that will happen quickly. I'm praying for at least two weeks of at most light snow.

Those of us in CNY, and probably also our brethren in WNY, laugh at the freaking out over snow. I'm pretty sure that in Pulaski NY, however many inches Boston has this year is what Pulaski gets in one snowfall.

of course we don't know about that.... cause nobody cares (or is it nobody still lives there?!?! )

Except that you have cities shutting down over what's basically a normal snowfall. Back in the day, when I used to walk 20 miles ot school uphill both ways, this sort of snow was normal, and we dealt with it.

And what is the population of Pulaski compared to Boston?

It's all relative. My daughter went to school in South Carolina and she once called home to tell us that school had been canceled and she could still see grass on the lawns. I'd be quite certain that if Pulaski got the most snow they'd ever gotten in a two week period that they'd be freaking out. And there'd be someone in Alaska or the northern Yukon Territories laughing at them.

Thanks, I basically do that with a very wide shovel for the amount of snow shown in the video. Problem now is that the banks by the side of the driveway are close to four feet high and pushing the snow don't work no mo'.

Mine are about 10 feet high at the top now, but I push it out a couple of 50-foot-long snow ramps. It's a daily workout and provides the kids with a sledding run. I'm really hoping next year I'll be able to get an ATV w/plow.

I defy anybody here to a loathe-off of Bostonians, however being snow puss1es is not among their many, many flaws. During the 7 years I lived there we had many severe snowstorms, and as a whole the city just dug out at the soonest opportunity just the way Buffalo or Syracuse would.

Worst whiners on the planet? Yes. But not about snow.

Its normal for Boston to get that much snow in that short a period of time? I have no idea what Bostons average yearly snowfall is but I'll bet they broke that in less than a month and to top it off it hasn't been warm enough to melt much of it during that period. I know at my house right now I've never seen this much snow on the ground ever. We're way over average and we still have 6 weeks of winter left and generally the snowiest 6 weeks.

The good people of Boston have been treated to years and years of snow jobs.

But good people of DC have escaped the snow jobs. Instead they're piled with bovine excrement.

Thanks for the idea. Don't know if I have a good location for the snow ramps, but it's an interesting thought.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

This one baffles me. If I understand it right, the reason they can't do it in the first place is because of all the chemicals in the snow. So instead of dumping it in the harbor, they have giant snow melting machines that burn thousands of gallons of fuel. The snow melting machines produce a lot of chemical-laden water. Where does the water go? I truly doubt that it gets treated to remove the chemicals.
Not to mention, what would have happened to all that H20 (and the chemicals it would still pick up) if it happened to be 20 degrees warmer when it came down? It would just run off directly through the storm sewer system....into the harbor. But no, we can't put *snow* there - that's different, somehow!

Its not just chemicals. its litter, bottles dirt ect. Portland Maine has an issue with just snow getting plowed into bay, the slush it made froze boats in the harbor. Fishing boats can't get out.

we are afraid of dirt?!? :D

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

its easy to get arrogant about handling snow when you think of Michigan Tech, where we have already had 200 inches and more to come. but then again we have the tools for handling it.
I feel for Boston.
