Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

With the amount of wind we had yesterday morning, I thought that today felt warmer than yesterday even though the actual air temp was colder. It's still -9F at home, -6F here in Minneapolis. Predicted highs for today are -6F and -4F, respectively, and that led to a large number of schools either delaying two hours or shutting down for the day (which I still find odd as we only ever closed for big snowfalls when I was in school, not low temps).

I think it's odd, too. We only closed for snow or ice - never cold. And we had to stand and wait for the bus. It was a 45 minute ride to school in GOOD weather.

What's really odd is grown adults not going somewhere because it's cold. That's what winter clothes are for - bundle up and live your life, sallies. :p

We braved the elements to go to the Badger hoops game last night. Some friends of ours gave their tickets away coz of the cold. I don't get it. Wasn't that bad out.

I'd rather have to "live my life" in the cold than a blizzard or ice storm - both of which have caused me to skip games.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

The other side of the coin is the boy. Have I mentioned that teenaged boys are morons? Just about every last one of them from my experience.

So last night he tells us that he almost died on the 400 yard or so walk from where I dropped him to the front door of the school. Do tell...

See, I saw what he was preparing to leave the house in and I even asked him if he had a hat. "No, my hair's still wet and it'll be messed up all day."

Okay... (idiot)...

Now this is a day that he woke up and was disappointed that school hadn't been cancelled due to wind chill. It was close... so a very cold day, and presumably, he was aware that it was a very cold day.

I could tell on the ride over that he was hoping that I'd drop him near the front door (from experience though, he knew better than to ask) - and ironically, I may have if he had chosen a more suitable wardrobe for the weather. He wore a short sleeve t-shirt and his hockey warmup jacket, no hat and no gloves.

Have a nice walk... (idiot)...

When he told us his near death experience story, my wife said, "You need to be smarter than the weather." and I told him there were two paths that he could have chosen that morning and he chose The Path of Stupid.

He walked away muttering about how hard life is or some other bull****...

It's fun being a parent. :D

And don't come in here talking about how responsible your boy is and how he dresses appropriately and never speeds and whatever else.

Your boy is a freak.

Not my kid. He'll dress like your kid, complete with wet hair, given the chance. He's also brought the car back with unexplained scrapes lately.

I did the wet hair/frozen mullet thing back in the day. As for the scrapes, it's gotta be the carts at the grocery store. At least that's what I tried to go with when I had a nice dent in the side of the truck many moons ago. Although Dad didn't exactly call bull**** on me right there on the spot, I knew good and well he didn't believe a word of it.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Why is there a school drop off point 3 blocks from the front door?

Or is Gurt just being sadistic.

Is 400 yards 3 blocks? Maybe it's more like 2 blocks then, right across the street from the grounds. I'm not driving into that fustercluck unless it's pouring rain or if he's injured as he was earlier in the fall.

And sadistic? Absolutely.

I was reveling in his poor decision(s).

Thing is, he doesn't seem to be getting any smarter. I keep waiting for that breakthrough that other parents of older boys assure me is coming.

Those other parents aren't seeking to actively destroy their children, though. :D

Dude, we've had the what to wear on cold days conversations umpteen times since about 6th grade.

I was just thrilled that it finally bit him in the ***. :D

Today, on a colder day, he wore a long sleeve polo, his warmup jacket and his team beanie. Still no gloves, but progress was made.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

Back when I used to run long distance regularly, the most important rule was always, "start off going into the wind, return with the wind at your back." That is a crucial winter safety rule, very important.

I came back from a run one day and had trouble taking off my stocking cap. I had perspired on the run home, then it froze in my hair that stuck out from under the cap. I had an icicle about 8" long dangling back there.

Re: Winter 2015 - boom or snow job?

I used to wonder why we had so many school closings on cold days here until someone reminded me that we have a lot of hills here and a school bus sliding on pre-dawn ice is a very dangerous thing.

A common condition for kids who practice hockey outside. Makes good hockey hair a poor choice sometimes if you have to wear a helmet outside.

Is this where I chime in that through high school I wore shorts and sneakers virtually year round? -30? Yep, throw the shorts on and let's go to the place of learning!

I've since smartened up ;) Now I just wear shorts year round in a warmer climate!
