Who's next for a move up to D1?

Since 1992 there have been five, and only five, men's athletic team sports added by schools that were in FBS or its equivalent.

Three required a massive eight-figure donation: Penn State hockey, Arizona State hockey, and Utah lacrosse.
One required dropping another men's sport: Oregon added baseball and dropped wrestling.
Two were Michigan: added soccer and lacrosse.

That's it, that's the entire list. So, if the dream is to have a new hockey team at a school that has FBS football (not just Power 5/4/2 whatever, any level of FBS football), find an eight figure donor. Otherwise, it isn't a real discussion.

Rhode Island is FCS and Binghamton is non-football, so maybe. But I'm guessing with the House settlement, opting in, Title IX upheaval, conference realignment, etc. most schools are in a "wait-and-see" mode with their entire athletic departments.
That's a fascinating stat.

Started looking at Maryville University after seeing LIU's schedule. Seems like they have been putting up some good results in the ACHA and are getting ready to test the D1 waters against LIU and UAA (along with a trip to Simon Fraser). Lindenwood is just up the road and previously shared an ACHA conference with Maryville, so likely a big incentive for them to move up and further capitalize on the St. Louis hockey market.

"These exhibition games are an exciting step as our university continues to evaluate the feasibility of NCAA Division I men's hockey," said John Hogan, Director of Hockey and Head Coach. "This is us dipping our toes in the water. We have ambitions to compete at the highest level possible, and these games give our players, staff, and school a real sense of what that future could look like."

Here is an article with an update on the Maryville Hockey fundraising campaign. They just secured a $1.25 million investment from Vantage Credit Union.

Anyone heard anything from Tennessee State? I would think they would want to start to announce some player commitments... or maybe they don't want to disappoint the players again.

I agree. Although in the CHN Podcast Mike said that despite having 6 teams, the conference may not qualify for an autobid due to NCAA tournament rules requiring 75% of the conference to be division 1 schools, or otherwise grandfathered in from the 2011 ruling.

Currently they would have LIU, Stonehill, UAF (grandfathered in), and Lindenwood. Maryville is a division 2 athletic department that would be competing up. Important to note - Mike said that it is unclear weather UAA kept their division 1 grandfathered distinction following the suspension of their program from the 2022 suspension.

It is also unclear if a division 1 conference, like the Northeast Conference, could sponsor the sport in order for the teams to be eligible for an autobid.

Tennesee State head coach Duante' Abercrombie will be one of the ceremonial puck drop participants at the Washington Capitals vs Vegas Golden Knights game on February 27th.

This is the first thing I have seen Duante do since the program postponement last July.

Yes, interesting!

"Abercrombie is a Washington, D.C., native whose hockey journey began at Fort Dupont Ice Arena under legendary coach Neal Henderson. He serves as the head coach of the Tennessee State University Men’s Hockey team, leading the first NCAA Division I hockey program at an HBCU."

This statement implies its a done deal. But press releases have been wrong in the past.........
