Who's next for a move up to D1?

Are there any real plans or is this a wishful thinking? SNHU already has their name on the arena where the Monarchs played. They’ve grown an amazing amount so this isn’t far fetched.

I'd say SNHU is closer to shutting down that program than moving it up to D1. Not that they are shutting it down, but rather the idea of D1 is just nothing more than a pipe dream as things stand.

If one NE10 team goes away, that will effectively end D2 hockey and put the rest of those programs in limbo. That might inspire SNHU or Saint A's to move up - but it could also do the inverse and just cause those schools to eliminate the sport.

Not sure if anyone else caught the interview on the NHL Radio Network on SiriusXM with David Pagnotta, but he indicated that he is working with Oklahoma State on starting a varsity program. He indicated that there is currently one high-level donor already involved and they think that a few more high-level donors that will also get on board. Their current hope is a 5 year plan. Pretty interesting.

That would be cool! Especially now that ASU is in the BIG12 with them. And it probably should not be a surprise that OSU is considering it being they have a very strong Olympics sports winning record and place highly in the Directors Cup over the years.

AIC to drop back down to D-II.
Per Mike McMahon:
American International’s leaders informed members of its hockey team today that the program will return to Division II at the end of the 2024-25 season, ending a 27-year run as a Division I program.

Sources told College Hockey Insider that the program was being dropped back to D-II because of budgetary issues and the changing landscape of NCAA athletics.

According to AIC’s latest EADA filing, men’s hockey had the highest expenditures of any non-football team at the school, totaling $1,773,427.

Is it time for the men's D1 tournament to become a National Collegiate Championship like the women?

I was listening to the latest USCHO podcast and they interviewed the new College Hockey Inc director. He believes the next schools to join the ice box are schools who don't have a major emphasis on football.

Thinking about it, I would tend to agree. The NIL arms race for big time football and basketball is going to be such a drain on those athletic departments that try to stay relevant in those two sports, there isn't going to be the $1 to $2 million per year available to throw at a hockey program.

On the one hand, it seems kind of cheesy that a grouping of the Alaskas, Lindenwood, LIU, Stonehill, and Tennessee State could get an autobid and take away an at large.

On the other, this is the cost of no conference being willing to work with/take even one of these schools, so I guess everyone has made their own bed.

The can't get an autobid if they don't form an official conference. It even says so in that article.

Right, but the single sport moratorium may go away next week, in which case they can form a conference this month and have an autobid after two years.

This is not indicative of a move up to D1 but rather more about interest in college hockey in the southeast. Savannah Hockey Classic - Savannah Sports Council The tournament this weekend features Tennessee vs. Florida and Georgia vs. Georgia Tech opening night. I've thought Savannah may be a great location for a regional as it would be a new city that has better weather and lots to see and do.

What league will Stonehill apply to? Geographically it fits into hockey East well.

Savannah is a fun town, been there several times, lots to see and do. They also have the 2nd largest St. Patrick's Day celebration, only behind NYC, larger than Boston and Chicago.

Sure. But the article also says it would be very difficult to get those teams to agree to be in the same conference. Travel would be insane. And some have ideas of getting into nearby conferences. For years, DiGregorio (sp?) has been trying to get the "orphan" programs to band together in some sort of conference or working arrangement. But there are just too many differences of goals, needs, and wants to be able to come to any sort of compromise. I just don't see it happening.
