Who's next for a move up to D1?

They feel destined for Atlantic Hockey to me, maybe ECAC if they're lucky.

I agree, as Stonehill would add a sixth team to the eastern five in Atlantic Hockey besides giving the conference an even number at 12. One downside would be that Stonehill plays home games at Bridgewater Ice Arena with a seating capacity of only 1000. But Stonehill has a relatively good endowment so probably has the capacity to raise the funds to build a larger on-campus ice arena.

Hockey East will never let Holy Cross in (and they want in), so what makes Stonehill think Hockey East would every want them?

Not so sure about that... reports back when Notre Dame left the conference in 2016 is that the Hockey East approached Holy Cross to join, but seems to have fallen through due to an arena issue... I'm guessing that if Holy Cross ever decides to upgrade to a new facility, then they'd be a shoo in for the Hockey East.. especially with the woman's team already in the Hockey East..

Not sure what your point is? If they get a new arena, they'll get in... just not holding my breathe that they're getting a new arena any time soon... although, they did purchase a piece of property recently that would probably be big enough for a new arena..

If they build an arena, good for them.

I'm saying Notre Dame, at least the way Joey went about it, was not a positive for the league

Bruins in college D1 hockey?????
Appears to be wishful thinking on the part of alumni at this point. Interesting history read.

A nice thought but slim chance of ever happening. Let's start with $$$$ and Title IX. Then go on to Football and hoops interests not being even remotely willing to share the pie with hockey. (See Illinois, University of.)

BTW, the ACHA is a Get Out of Jail Free Card to college athletic departments since club programs are not subject to Title IX. As a result, many have the look and feel of varsity programs, are lavishly funded with seasoned coaching staffs, play to paid gates, and have sizeable fan bases. It's like having your cake an eating it too.

Everyone likes to look at big name P4 programs when discussing "who's next"......I think you are more likely to see schools like Binghamton or URI add men's varsity hockey.

Binghampton brings back memories of the SUNY teams that Div III Plattsburgh used to beat by three touchdowns. They were not ever competitive before folding the program. According to wikipedia, they went 11-101-0 in 5 years (87-92). I'm sure a venture into Div I hockey would be taken more seriously by the Administration....

My hope is slanted, because I'm a life long Alaskan..... But the growth of hockey in the Pacific Northwest and the Major Junior players availability now per NCAA rule change, I truly hope Campus's like Washington Huskies, Oregon Ducks, and Washington State Cougars make the jump to D1 hockey. Just north of the boarder are the Simon Fraser Red Leafs and recently they have really loaded up their schedule with a large amount of D1 teams, and some people feel that they're ready to make the jump too. If those four team, along with the two Alaskan teams, then a new conference could be born (or the WCHA comes back for men's hockey).

Tennessee State is out for the upcoming season because of financial reasons. Most recruits are leaving for other programs. No games are scheduled for the upcoming season. Simon Frasier would be a logical choice. They've been playing against D1 schools for a few years now. It would be an easy transition.

Oregon and Washington are B10 and would join that league if they decided to go D1 hockey.

And they folded just before the season started because they didn't have enough players. Who needs to recruit...?

A joke that program was is an understatement.

I never believed from day one that program was ever going to see the light of day. And I'm sure it's dead for good. Who would ever commit there or give them a second chance?

URI has always been coveted by Hockey East. It is the only New England state university without a D1 hockey program and remains the logical choice to round out Hockey East membership. But that's not likely to happen. Various sources have approached URI with open checkbooks going back years, but all of those efforts were rebuffed by a combination of opposition from entrenched basketball interests and the vicissitudes of Rhode Island state politics.

Worth noting, however, that URI has been an ACHA D1 power for years, so making a jump to NCAA D1 wouldn't be starting from scratch. (See previous comment about the ACHA being a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.)

Since 1992 there have been five, and only five, men's athletic team sports added by schools that were in FBS or its equivalent.

Three required a massive eight-figure donation: Penn State hockey, Arizona State hockey, and Utah lacrosse.
One required dropping another men's sport: Oregon added baseball and dropped wrestling.
Two were Michigan: added soccer and lacrosse.

That's it, that's the entire list. So, if the dream is to have a new hockey team at a school that has FBS football (not just Power 5/4/2 whatever, any level of FBS football), find an eight figure donor. Otherwise, it isn't a real discussion.

Rhode Island is FCS and Binghamton is non-football, so maybe. But I'm guessing with the House settlement, opting in, Title IX upheaval, conference realignment, etc. most schools are in a "wait-and-see" mode with their entire athletic departments.
