Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

As the season winds down and everyone gets their hopes up for the NCAA's, would it be a possibility that the West gets all the Pool C bids?? It just seems that the West has had more than their share of teams in the top 10 this year, or not. For the West guys I do hope you get atleast 2.

If Plattsburgh wins the SUNYAC yes, its possible. I'm not so sure Norwich even has a chance at a Pool C. Babson? Williams? Probably not? Oswego? Doubtful. ECAC West, No. UMB? Nope. Trinity? Nope. Geneseo? Probably not. Plattsburgh is close but with their win over UWS would win most common opponents and win%. Most western teams would win the "ECAC West-esque" SOS but would lose out to Plattsburgh in criteria. Most western teams not named UWSP, Adrian, and SNC, would not have a great record against ranked teams. If the West gets any less then 2 Pool C bids this year I will be shocked.

BTW, looking @ the PWR's on this site, guess who the #1 team in the East is?

Yep, Babson with 22 PWR wins
Williams has 22 PWR wins, but Babson beats Williams
Plattsburgh and Norwich have 20 PWR wins, but Plattsburgh beats Norwich in the comparisons.

Surprising?

Unless you're confusing the Pool B in here somehow, 2 Pool C's to the West could make it a 6-5 split.

I believe there will be 7 AQs, 1 Pool-B and 3 Pool C bids this year. The Pool-B spot could easily go to a team from WIAC though it looks like right now only Stevens Point or Eau Claire are serious contenders. Seems unlikely that if the Pool-B bid went to a WIAC team that all three C bids would also go to western teams. It'd cause havoc with the 500 mile issue not to mention the play-in games.

ECAC-W folks feel free to jump in regarding Utica, Hobart & ELmira et al vs the WIAC for the Pool-B spot.......I imagine there are strong feelings.

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

Think there are only two AQs from the west NCHA and MIAC

Correct. If UWSP pulls the Pool B (a very good possibility at this point in time), and two Pool C's go West (which PSUChamps mentioned was a possibility as well, although I do think he was mixing in Pool B in there somewhere), that gets us to 6-5. Personally, I'll believe a 6-5 split when I see it on the brackets.

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

Someone refresh my memory here. Do the regional rankings start getting published this week, or next?

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

Ah. So the groundhog did see his shadow, and now we're stuck with two more weeks of this.

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

I read that only teams regionally ranked in the last week count this year. No more of the once ranked always ranked thing. In addition, I hear that there will only be 8 teams ranked in the east (12 last season I think). This gives many fewer opportunities to build up you record against regionally ranked teams. It should be a fairly narrow criterion this year.

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

Whether it's a 6-5 West split or not, count on having 2 Eastern teams in Lewiston. The NCAA does not want an empty barn. 6 Western teams is a little bit of a stretch anyway. Adrian, St. Norbert are in. WSP is probably in. St. Thomas and Eau-Claire are good, but no lock. After that..???. If those 5 teams I mentioned get in, the East would have 6. The West is top heavy for sure. Is there another western team more deserving than Plattsburgh, Babson, Williams, Norwich?? UWRF, Gustavus ??

Re: Who's #1 - Poll guess of 2/3/14

Here's a hypothetical:

FIRST ROUND:

St. Thomas @ Eau-Claire
Nichols @ Williams
Salem State @ Norwich

SECOND ROUND

St. Thomas/Eau Claire @ Adrian
Stevens Point @ St. Norbert
Nichols/Williams @ Plattsburgh
Salem State/Norwich @ Babson

Nope No confusion. 2 Pool C's and 1 Pool B. I originally had Trinity and Babson in over UWEC only do to the current ranking. At years end I could see another WIAC team making a push for the 2nd Pool C bid. (Adrian getting the first). Now if Plattsburgh gets bounced in the tournament, that 2nd Pool C bid "should" go to them with the third going to a WIAC team.

In all actuality if Norwich is put up against Adrian, St.Thomas, and UWEC, Norwich (and the East) will get swept out of Pool C bids. If Geneseo wins the SUNYAC, Plattsburgh would lose to Adrian, but beat out St.Thomas and UWEC 2-1 and 3-1 in criteria. Trinity the next team up would be swept as well.

Which would set up
WILLIAMS E1
PLATTSBURGH E2
BABSON E3
GENESEO E4
SALAM ST E5
NICHOLS E6

SNC W1
ADRIAN W2
UWSP W3
STTHOMAS W4
GUST W5

Nichols at Babson
Salem St at Geneseo
Gustavus at St.Thomas

Salem St/Geneseo at Williams
Nichols/Babson at Plattsburgh
Gustavus/St.Thomas at St.Norbert
UWSP at Adrian

Now those would be some nice potential quarterfinal matchups...
