Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Very good. I also recommend "Our Endless Numbered Days."

Iron & Wine is another band / individual (Sam Beam) that I've just discovered within the last couple of years. Although I'm in my fifties, I recently found out several years ago who Nick Drake was, a singer/songwriter from the late 60s, early 70s, and this lead me somehow to Iron & Wine (Sam Beam). His first album _The Creek Drank the Cradle_ is very subtle musically and powerful lyrically. He has expanded his sonic expression with each successive album and his songwriting does not diminish. Yes, _Our Endless Numbered Days_ is "very good" as well as _The Shepherd's Dog_. Unfortunately, I haven't enjoyed _Kiss Each Other Clean_ as well as the first three.

I discovered The Decemberists just a couple of years ago. Think Colin Meloy is very good at what he writes and produces. They've had a string of excellent albums. Finally saw them in early 2011 and was amazed at the diversity in ages at the concert (I'm in my 50s). They must have quite a widespread demographic. I'm curious to see what's up next after _The King is Dead_ and the recent EP _Long Live the King_. I've heard they're going to be on hiatus for a while--not sure if that was fact or fiction. I do know he's a writer "writer of fictions" and may be taking time out to explore that area of his life.

Live album drops on March 13th and is called "We All Raise Our Voices to the Air"

twenty songs from 4 venues, ryman, stubbs, marymoor and mcmenimens

nothing doing tour wise right now, but i am sure they'll be on the road to some extent this summer... meloy is on the board of the newport folk festival in rhode island... hopefully they will be playing that again and i'll be able to make it down...

for another good fix, npr has podcasts of shows at sasquatch and newport on their website that can be downloaded for free in the itunes store by searching "npr live concerts from all songs considered"

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

In addition to the aforementioned Decemberists Newport Folk Festival Live Show, a few that have been making regular appearances in the rotation for me of late have been

State Radio - Live at the Boston Pavilion 2010
Carbon Leaf - Indian Summer and Echo Echo
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue Vols I & II
John Butler Trio - Live at Red Rocks
Ryan Adams & the Cardinals - Cardinology
Fort Minor - The Rising Tied

Thanks for the heads up. Listening to Newport now.

Can this be downloaded or only streamed?

i used itunes on my ipod to download it... i would assume it could be downloaded through the itunes store onto a pc/mac as well so that you would not have to stream it...

Listening to Steve Earle & the Bluegrass Dukes 11/12/99, the Station Inn, Nashville, TN.

If I hadn't seen Tom Waits in 1999, then the Steve Earle & the Del McCoury Band show that I saw would have been the best show I saw that year.

The show I'm listening to is with a different backup band, but is the same material. Excellent show.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

For those talking about Iron & Wine, there are a couple of live concert podcasts in the same place that gscott13 mentioned for the Decemberists podcasts.

There's about 300 or so concerts under NPR podcasts on iTunes including a 2+ hour Tom Waits show.

Thanks again for the info gscott!

U2 8-13-92 Giants Stadium

Been overdosing on U2 for the past three weeks since seeing the movie Killing Bono.

Found a torrent site and have grabbed about 25 fabulous sounding shows from 1981-2011 in the past week. Have listened to most of them.

Burnout approaching fast and I'll probably shelve them for a year or more.

Over the Rhine: Ohio

I first borrowed this from a friend a few years ago; had to get a copy for myself. Simply masterful from the first to the last track; "Changes Come," "Jesus in New Orleans," and "Anything At All" stand out for me...

Better than Trumpet Child, but my favorites from them are Eve, Till We Have Faces or Films for Radio. I realize they are different records to be sure, but Ohio is very much a mood record for me whereas with the others I can just hit play.

Been listening to 3 and Hallowed Ground by Violent Femmes. I think so many people only know them for their eponymous record which was played everywhere (radio and parties alike) but those records imho show they were much more than just the one.
