A friend of mine put together a complilation of The Meat Puppets and Ben Harper for me as they were both artists that I've enjoyed whenver I heard them but for some reason never bought their music. I am really enjoying it quite a bit. Other artists that I'd like to get to know more include Dinosaur Jr., Television, Loop, Alex Chilton...

Dinosaur Jr.

The You're Living All Over Me LP is a good start (maybe the only album of theirs you'll ever need), though the more recent Beyond is solid too.

The new Steel Panther record is pretty solid, though about what you'd expect (hey, it may be funny, but it's still cheese metal). The highlights are "Just Like Tiger Woods", "17 Girls in a Row", and "That's What Girls Are For". I was also partial to "Gold Digging Whore" and "I Like Drugs".

Question: My iPod died and I need to buy a new one. Looking for a new MP3 player that's small in size, easy to carry, and has a capacity in the 2-4 GB range. Any recommendations?

Given that you had an iPod, and I assume are used to the iTunes interface, I'd suggest taking a look at the iPod shuffle - tiny and cheap at less than $50, and has 2 GB.

There are probably a whole mess of MP3 players that meet your desired specs and size range, and I'm guessing most of them fall into the <$50 category. I had a 2GB Sansa player in the past that worked just fine. Now, I'm one of those strange people who owns a Zune. I think there are a dozen of us.

Thanks; I had a first-generation iPod shuffle, which only has 512 MB of memory; got it in the fall of 2005. I'm surprised it lasted this long. Friday, when I'm out, I'll pick up a new Shuffle.

As for what I'm listening to, Hail to the Thief from Radiohead and Back to Black by Amy Winehouse are receiving heavy play at home now...

Dinosaur Jr. were and are again, AWESOME. Bug, You're Living All Over Me and Green Mind are quintessential listening (imo) for them

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

So instead of being the old curmudgeon I generally am re: music I've decided to delve into some new bands (or new for me at least) and have been really pleasantly surprised

No Age - Everything In Between
St. Vincent - Strange Mercy

are two great recent discoveries by newer bands

in other news...I LOVE Husker Du but seeing these recent performances w/Bob Mould playing Husker songs w/Dave Grohl, Jon Wurster, etc...he's jumped the shark. it sounds like a cover band unfortunately. Either re-unite w/Grant and Greg for a tour or just retire the Husker catalog in band settings (just play em solo if you need to)

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Made a playlist today of the best of the following and am shuffling:

Modest Mouse - Quirky but in a non-annoying way a la Ween.
Cake - One of my favorites and imho underrated.
Cracker - They've become a bit hit or miss for me lately but their first handful of records were very good.
R.E.M. - Whil they lost some edge after Bill Berry left, one of my favorite bands of all time and their first 20 years are hard to top.
Garbage - Didn't care for Beautiful but Bleed Like Me redeemed them yet sadly was very much ignored.
Interpol - Probably my favorite band to start post-2000

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Got a 160gb iPod Classic that's got my entire CD collection on it.

Today I'm listening to a mix of my Stones albums.

I only like a certain era of Stones and have the album Flowers through the stuff they did in the late 70s.

LOVE my iPod. Still amazes me that I can have about 2800 albums worth of music with me at all times.

If you haven't heard the new Doomtree album, do yourself a favor and head over to iTunes ASAP. Outstanding stuff.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Mix of Rush, 1983 or older, in protest to their HOF snubbing.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

Listening to Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes; think I like this one better than their self-titled debut.

Re: What's on your Playlist? USCHO Music Thread

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound's cover of Wilco's I Am Trying to Break Your Heart is very, very awesome.

I would link to the youtube video so you can hear it, but sadly, I do not have access to youtube at work. Google it.

There it is. Very good and VERY different from the original, which I love... :)

Inspired me to put in Foundations of Funk, Brand New Bag

I'll have to check out JC.
