A little bit. Copper doesn't net you as much as it once did.

In the Chicagoland area, one suburb was hit by vandals who stole manhole lids. The city engineer showed just how little scrap value they were worth, and how it would cost taxpayers at least 100x the scrap value to replace the kids.

Then again, this is the same area where people stole GPS tracked school buses and drove them to a neighboring scrap yard to scrap them.

Back in 2010, Kristine and Michael Barnett thought they were coming to the rescue of a 6-year-old Ukrainian girl named Natalia Grace, adopting her under shadowy circumstances about which they were too polite to ask questions. Instead, they wound up with a full grown adult with dwarfism—and, it turns out, some extreme psychiatric problems. As Kristine Barnett told the Mail:

‘She would make statements and draw pictures saying she wanted to kill family members, roll them up in a blanket and put them in the backyard,’ she told DailyMailTV.

‘She was standing over people in the middle of the night. You couldn’t go to sleep. We had to hide all the sharp objects.

‘I saw her putting chemicals, bleach, Windex something like that, in my coffee and I asked her, what are you doing? She said, “I am trying to poison you.”

OKAY! Later, the Barnetts were charged with neglect for allegedly abandoning Natalia, which they argue is obviously not possible considering she was an adult all along

My experience with social workers and the state in situations like this is the parents here are lucky they weren't (a) murdered and/or (b) railroaded into prison by the foster/adoption system.

There is something about that whole story that just doesn't ring true. Especially when you consider the timing of the release of the movie Orphan relative to this adoption.

The girl obviously has some issues, but that's not surprising to me. Our neighbors adopted three kids out the old Soviet bloc twenty years ago and those kids were a mess. They had numerous and severe physical and emotional problems, and it eventually led to the divorce of the couple.

This looks like a case of a couple who adopted a kid with extreme problems, most of which were probably not disclosed or obvious at the time of adoption. At first they had confidence they could handle it, but eventually it became too much. This "Orphan" plan was then hatched and they were able to get some doctor to say she was in her twenties, even though other medical tests revealed otherwise. They set the kid up in an apartment, then bail on the kid.

Pretty sure the Thumpers are for Halloween, because Tradition. It's them darn ferriners (purposely spelled that way) that are ruining it. Or the libs. Or both.

I still say Thumpers. *Real* Thumpers know that Halloween is a celebration of the witchcraft, which is the work of the Devil, just like those sinful Harry Potter books.

I know there are areas in Wisconsin that will not allow their children to partake in any Halloween activities for that very reason. Never mind that the day has become something entirely different in the centuries since Christianity was introduced to Britain and Ireland.

This disease has even reached Long Island. Our Elementary School banned Halloween for "safety" but my friends there on the school board and PTA said it was because the nutbar parents had gotten out of hand screeching about TEH DEBIL. I asked them if they intended to drop science to appease them, too.

This is a new invasion of imbecility into my hometown. There was one girl in my high school who was a Biblical literalist -- didn't believe in evolution, the whole shebang. At the time we all just assumed she was mentally ill (she had other, um, eccentricities). I had no conception there were entire enclaves of these morons until I started following the news in college.
