Re: What the Fark 3: The Strange and Unusual

This just in via the Boston Globe

And two weeks ago, a man killed on Route 128 (actually I-95, but to locals it will always be Route 128) when a wheel detaches from an axle of a truck driving in the opposite direction, crosses the median and hits his car.

Is that the portion where you are driving simultaneously 95 North and 128 South while driving west? I had to give somebody directions through that once. Never again.

Isn't that in NJ around Princeton? I-295 North Ends and becomes I-95 South that continues North and then turns west to cross the Delaware before turning South in PA?

I think you may be referring to an intersection off Route 128 with a ramp marked by a sign for I95 North and I93 South. Where they run together, 128 and I95 are always nominally the same direction (North or South) despite the fact that you are most often headed east or west.

It's like 35W and 35E in the Twin Cities. They don't run east/west. They run north/south. Often confuses outsiders.

And then there is a heavily traveled road in the NW suburbs that has 3 names: County Road 42/Rockford Road/42nd Avenue. And the signage doesn't always list all three names....

And finally, 494 runs north/south AND east/west, the same with 694. Just depends on what part of the highway you're on...

When it comes to the interstates around here, people just don't understand the basic rules to how the naming convention works. It's actually quite simple and logical once you take about all of five minutes to learn it.

I agree, but try explaining that to an outsider. Ok, you take 35W south to 694 west, to 494 south, to 494 east. (extreme, and way out of the way, but you get what I'm saying).

Yep, that's right. The place I'm thinking of is south of Braintree, and it's where the traffic from the Pats games meets the traffic in the interstate. Hilarity ensues.

Nope, the place I'm thinking of is MA-128 "America's Technology Highway!"

Now I know where you're talking about! I was thinking on the north side.

Re: What the Fark 3: The Strange and Unusual

35W is west of 35E - it's so cryptic. :D

Now the names of the airport terminals were goofy before finally going Cat in the Hat.

Close. 35 goes north/south. It splits, and 35W takes you to the western part of the metro and 35E takes you to the east part, before merging again north of the Cities into 35 general.
