What is your favorite playoff moment?

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

My favorite moment for my team? Well, the championships. But I had center-ice seats for the legendary Molly Game Weekend at Yost, and few moments have ever topped that in any sport for me.

For other teams? In 2001, before the Holy Cross miracle, it was inconceivable that a tiny MAAC school could even play on the same ice as a Michigan team loaded with NHL talent and targeting a 10th national championship, but that is what Mercyhurst did. Their goaltender played the game of his life, they answered every Michigan attack, and pushed Michigan to the brink in Grand Rapids against a partisan crowd.

So when they finally succumbed in the end and completed their handshake line, I stood and applauded. And so did the rest of the arena. And the team skated over to their tiny section of fans and raised their sticks, and their fans roared in appreciation. And I was as happy for them in loss as for my own team in victory--magnificent. Everything sports is about.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

Here they are for me (in no particular order):

1. BU comes back from two down in the final minute to beat Miami in DC in 2009. Two fans behind us from Wisconsin reached over to my wife and I and put their hands on our shoulders, saying "It's not over yet" as we were sitting there totally depresses. Of course, we thought they were just trying to make us feel better (and they probably were :)) when the surreal happened.

2. BU beats Wisconsin, 5-3 in the 1978 national semifinals in Providence. Will never forget all the Wisconsin fans (probably at least 2000 of them) in their red cowboy hats with the white "W" in front, the huge band (this was not just a "pep" band - this was a Big 10 band) and their playing their alma mater ("Varsity, Varsity") after they lost. This game featured three of the "BU 4" that helped the US beat the Russians in 1980 (Craig, Silk and O'Callahan).

3. BOTH games of this unbelievable doubleheader in the ECAC Semi-Finals in 1977. UNH beats Cornell at the old Boston Garden, 10-9 in a wild game on a Bobby Gould shot from just inside the blue line 23 seconds into the 2nd OT. I have NEVER heard the noise after the UNH fans exploded that I heard in that game. There was this Cornell fan who would always sit in the same seat in the first row of the balcony (in those days, those were the best seats in hockey as the balcony was practically hanging right over the ice) and he would blow this gigantic air horn. And that was only the warmup. In the second game, Clarkson (featuring Dave Taylor) was leading BU 6-4 with less than three minutes to play. BU scored three goals to win, 7-6 ( I think Dave Silk or Rich Meagher scored the clincher).

Many others, but those are the ones that stand out to me!

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

Well, considering the relative dearth of recent NCAA tournament experience for "my" team, there are only two "favorite" moments that involve them in this millenium:
1. Having their Pep Band lauded by the announcers on national TV for their history and reputation (yes, they were actually referred to as "America's Pep Band").
2. A monster check in open ice, completely clean and legal, that totally destroyed the other team's freshman defenseman

I was at the game too, and completely agree - it was fantastic. Still one of my favorite playoff games.

Other favorites not involving my team - nothing beats the emotion of winning a title, so I'll go with (not in order) -

- BU's comeback in DC
- Kolanos in OT in Albany
- Potulny in OT in St. Paul - I may be going to Badger hell for saying this, but the emotion both on the ice and in the stands was unbelievable
- Denver holding on for dear life with a 6-on-3 to end the title game in Boston

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

When people around us asked a Miami fan to please sit down with 2 minutes to go in the 2009 championship he barked back pompously:

"I'm going to be on my feet for the last 2 minutes of my teams national championship so you're just gonna have to deal with it".

And this was some guy in his 40's, not some young gun...

He said it in such a *****ish way too. And so after each successive BU goal, the crowd around him did just as much laughing (at him) as they did cheering. I think by the end of the night he was in tears

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

Favorites that didn't involve my team:

- Jim Montgomery completing the hat trick against Lake State in the 1993 final.
- The Denver/Maine 6 on 3 1-0 NC game.
- Turco beating BC in OT in 1998. (I can still see that glove save from my balcony seat behind that goal.)
- CC/UVM National Semi in 1996 in Cincy. The Cats were robbed. It was a hand pass. :)

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

1991 Northern Michigan8, BU7 in triple overtime. I've never seen a game swing back and forth so many times. I had no dog in this fight, but I was elated and exhausted when it was over. Absolutly great! 2002 NC. Again, great drama and there is nothing like winning in front of a hugely partisan crowd. it doen't get any better. I'm sure the badger fans who were at Bradleycenter in '06 would agree. Teams don't get that chance very often, and you don't always win it. Example: Harvard over Minn in '79. Mich over BC in Boston in '97.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

Caustic - well done, as always.

The BU-Miami game will be hard to top.

IIRC there was a great UMD comeback that same year against Princeton at the Mariucci regional.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

I have two. For different reasons.

The championship games vs. BC in 2000 and 2001 were entertaining. The Frozen Four win over Minnesota was good for bragging rights. However, North Dakota's 6-4 victory over Boston University in the 1997 NCAA Championship is my favorite. I knew about the 1980 championship team. The 1982 championship team was the first that I followed closely. The 1987 championship team was one of the best teams in NCAA history. However, by 1997 the program had fallen off. Since the 1987 championship, UND had no conference titles and 1 NCAA tournament appearance. Blais had just taken over, and I didn't know what to expect. The mighty midgets were underdogs, but pulled it off. The program turned the corner that year. In the 16 years since, UND has 7 conference titles, 6 conference tournament titles, 15 tournament appearances, and 7 Frozen Fours.

On a more personal level I took my daughter to the NCAA regional final in Green Bay a couple of years ago (a 6-1 win over Denver in Matt Frattin's final year). It was a Daddy and daughter trip. It was also her introduction to North Dakota hockey. That will always be a great memory for me. I'm also a Packers fan, so it was her first time seeing Lambeau Field. As an added bonus, we made it on TV a couple of times after North Dakota goals. I'm glad that I DVR'd the game. She thought that was pretty neat.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

PC beating BU in 2OT's in 2001. Marc Suderman! Hooray!

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

Kolanos (Kobasew, Voce) 4:43 OT

I didn't have to look the time of the goal up, will never forget it.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

that was when Princeton 'tender Zane Kalemba lost his mind and threw the puck in the corner trying to run out the clock rather than take a d-zone draw with a couple of seconds left. UMD threw the puck out front and banged it home to tie and then won it in overtime.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

That UMD/Princeton game was sweet to be at - I already had my coat on ready to leave being down by 2 with 40 seconds left. Unreal.

But nothing compares to this:

My son and I were sitting near team toga at that game, but it was before I had met most of yuse guys.

Re: What is your favorite playoff moment?

#1: Sconnie wins NC in Detroit in 1990. My first NC game in person.
#2: Sconnie wins NC in Milwaukee 1996, watching in the Bradley Center with my fiancee.
#3: Sconnie wins regional in 3 ot's in Green Bay (my home town), watching from the blue line, row 2 where Skille shot the winner (also with my fiancee).
#4:Holy Cross defeats Minnesota.

Worst Memory: driving back from Albany in 1992 after Wisconsin gets screwed by a crummy ECAC ref that calls TWO 5-on-3 power plays in the championship game.

Not a favorite moment at all as a Gophers fan, but the 1989 final against Hahvad was an extraordinary game.
