Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

There are a ton of Techies here, though. I've even seen multiple cars (ID'd by their MTU bumper stickers/decals) around where I live. Given that I don't remember seeing one of those unless I knew the person (lived/worked in the same general area for about a decade), it could be a solid indication.

Not really. If you don't count the people we know...I've seen more representation from Vermont than Tech.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

According to the alumni registry there are 3300 alumni in Minnesota and 5200 in Wisconsin. Mind you this is who is registered on the alumni social network.

I haven't. I laughed my arse off when I saw my first "not-known" Tech sticker. I'm wondering if it's like UNDers choosing CO or MN. Yoopers had either Chi-town or Mpls, if they wanted to move out of state. I mean, someplace like Duluth? Are you serious?! ;)

I'm not sure if the Techie stereotype here means that number is almost all of the alums or a small percentage of them ;)

I work in engineering and am constantly running into Tech alums in the industry. There were three in a 20 person office in St. Louis Park I worked at a few years ago. Now, I only know a couple (outisde this board) who are hockey fans, but they are Techies.

Three within my eleven person group are Michigan Tech alumni and there's more within the company.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

So it look like at least between SCSU, Mankato, BSU, and Tech (which is half+ the revamped league), there is a solid alumni base in the Twin Cities. So if the WCHA is going to continue to look for a neutral tourny venue, they need to decide if the alumni base plus traveling fans are more likely to support a tourny hosted in MSP or in Green Bay.

I wonder how long the WCHA office will remain in Denver?

IF there was a Resch Center sized facility in MSP, I think its a no-brainer to keep it the Twin Cities, but I can't think of one that would fit.

There are none. I think the new WCHA could use Mariucci or maybe even Ridder and be fine for seating (of course no alcohol at either would be a problem). ;)

How about the Concrete Center in Stearns County?

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

You have to trust me that Target Center is terrible for hockey. If it wasn't, the X would never have been built. tried to find pics, but couldn't The rink has to push "end zone" seats out to fit the rink in and the views suffer because of it.

As to a "Resch Cetner sized rink" in the TC, Mariucci is the closest you've got. Also, a point I've made before is that the most centrally located rink to the conference is really Amsoil in Duluth. I know that both are not realistic.

I have no insight, but I can't see how they don't got with some sort of home site rotation. I mean, sure, you could go neutral site, but then you have to pick TC or GB, and neither are optimal. My only input on the pros of one vs. the other there is that if you look at the enrollments (BSU - 5,000, MSU - 17,000, SCSU - 18,000 vs. MTU - 7,000, NMU - 9,000), the possible attendance in the TC is much better in the TC than in GB.

This is why I wish UMD had not left...Amsoil would be perfect for this league's tournament.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

One problem with a rotating location - where are you going to house 5000 fans in Houghton / Hancock or any other small market team's city? I really think you need to put the tourney in a big city just to draw the casual fan / alumni. You might get "sorta" fans to drive to a big city as there are other things to do, but only the real fans are driving to Bemidji, Houghton, The Soo, etc for college hockey games, even it is a "championship" weekend.

When you get into something like that...its not just about the 5000 fans, its about having enough nice hotels for the teams plus all the fans.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

Not really. You see a higher concentration of NMU alums in the GB/Fox Valley area than in the MSP metro.

According to Dr. Wong, NMU's fastest growing alumni base is in the Twin Cities. I think NMU would support a WCHA Championship in either the Twin Cities or Green Bay.

The Twin Cities would be the best location with the three Minnesota schools, but I just think the X is too large of a barn and I've heard horror stories about how crappy the Target Center is for hockey.

For pride reasonds, would the WCHA hold its championship at Duluth or Minnesota? I'm thinking not, especially if no booze is allowed (NMU fans are very accustumed to a drunken league championship).

There are tons of issues with the regular season champion hosting that others have pointed out, but the big question is what would the league do if Anchorage (or Fairbanks) wins the right to host? McLeod has talked with me about the problems associated with finding seats on a plane to Alaska for one team on short notice. Now imagine trying to do that for three schools.

That leaves Green Bay as the best option. Is it perfect? No, but in talking with the Press-Gazette's USHL beat writer, he thinks fans would come out for a yearly WCHA championship there, especially if the Resch and WCHA can pull off some good drink specials. In his words, cheap booze, "would help."

The Green Bay Gamblers, GB Blizzard (Arena football) and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Minor league baseball) have all shown no matter how crappy the product is on the field or ice, Wisconsinites will flock to any event that features cheap beer.

If they rotate the league championship to home arena sites, I don't even want to know what the bastard child of the Final 5 and Houghton road trip weekend would turn into.

If the WCHA tourny would draw well in a neutral venue, that would be ideal. Green Bay and MSP both seem like they could be good possibilities, although Green Bay would be a more central location for the new WCHA. The big question is whether or not it would draw without Wisconsin playing. You would have a lot of SCSU, Mankato, and BSU alums in MSP, and I imagine a decent number of Michigan Tech alums (based on posters who are MT alums and live in MSP, anyway). Is MSP a major job market for NMU alums?

:)
He said job market for NMU alums.
:)

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

I'm sorry, but I really fail to see how Green Bay is even close to "central" in the '13-'14 WCHA - even forgiving the remoteness that is UAA:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid...ll=45.552525,-91.82373&spn=8.323206,21.643066

Adding LSSU, Ferris and Western changes that, of course, but until any of those three things happens, I see discussion of Green Bay as nothing more than the Michigan schools trying to force their will on the future of the tourney.

Duluth makes the most sense (excluding UAA) geographically, and Minneapolis the most if you want UAA to be able to fly in at the last minute (which is tough anyway). Green Bay only makes sense if St. Norbert or UW Milwaukee or UW Green Bay is brought along, IMHO.
