Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

The WCHA is currently in negotiations to continue the Final 5 in St. Paul. McLeod was interviewed on St. Cloud Radio this week and said it is their first choice and looks good.

It should be the WCHA's first choice.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

It should most definitely NOT be in the Twin Cities. It's a metro area that is a dump in my opinion and unworthy of any more WCHA tournaments after Minnesota and Duluth skipped out. Rotate it..NOT in Wisconsin either!? What? Not a single school is in Wisconsin. Make it a 6-year rotation....one year in Mankato, next in St. Cloud, next in Houghton, next Marquette, etc......

If the Twin Cities is such a dump, where would you say putting it? Oh, I'm sorry, Mankato, St. Cloud, Houghton, Marquette, Bemidji, Anchorage? No, those are all places people often like to visit. And you haven't addressed how some of those smaller cities are going to hold as many people as you'd like at a conference tournament.

It should be the WCHA's first choice.

And the fans better pack the thing, regardless of whether their team is in it or not. If we can't get people in the building the first few years, there won't be future dates there.

I havn't been to St. Paul in a while, but from what I recall it was a nice city. Compare it to Detroit. We Wildcat fans have had to endure the armpit of Michigan for too long. Sure, the Ren Cen area and Greek Town are nice but don't venture too far from the beaten path or you're risking your safety.

Hopefully St. Paul works out. Sure, the Xcel isn't the Civic Center but that town holds many great memories.

Eeeexactly. You jump on the people mover to go in between the two, then you jump on the freeway to get the * out.
And, I am a big fan of the X, and nothing would make me happier than to see the party continue there.

Can you imagine 20,000 people in Houghton for hockey (assuming you could get more than a couple hundred to go in the first place)?!

Successful troll is successful. And yet, still a "moran."

Exactly. It is going to be interesting to see what the fans do when this is all said and done. I have feeling it will be better than people think.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

The Green Bay Gamblers, GB Blizzard (Arena football) and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Minor league baseball) have all shown no matter how crappy the product is on the field or ice, Wisconsinites will flock to any event that features cheap beer.

It helped that the Blizzard and the Gamblers put good on field/ice products out this year!

agree! who doesn't want to go to Minneapolis? big airport, easy transportation, good restaurants, safe, MALL of AMERICA! can you say shopping? I'm a big fan of the X too - maybe now our team will have a chance to get there.

If we have have a conference of UA_, UAA, MTU, NMU, SCSU, BSU, MSUM, 8th? you have to hope that at least 2 minnesota schools make the final four because or the WCHA fans just continue to pack the place regardless of who is playing. I don't see UA_, UAA, MTU, NMU WCHA Final Four doing very well...

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

Seems pretty likely that you're going to have to hope for a larger contingent of "neutral Twin Cities" fans to show up which may be nothing more than hoping that Minnesota isn't playing in a Big Ten Tournament game at the same time, worst of all if they're the high seed hosting the finals.

Re: Welcome Back to the WCHA Northern Michigan

I doubt the crowds at the X will be more than 10,000. why does tha tmake sense for the X to do if htye won't make any money?

I agree. NMU is usually pretty good about sending a decent contingent to events like that, but we've usually banked on having a higher alumni concentration in the Detroit metro to boost attendance at the CCHA tourny. You can hardly expect the Alaskans to travel on the drop of a hat like that. Tech will draw a decent contingent all things considered, but you can't expect that to carry the event.

In an effort to increase attendance, the WCHA is changing their playoff format to the Final Forty. The bottom 19 D-I programs (or any teams from the BI6 or NaCHo leagues) will not be invited and everyone else will converge for this winner take all battle royale of college hockey. Since the entire tourney takes only two days, teams will want to hope for a high seed to avoid having to play the dreaded 5am Friday morning play-in game with the winner moving on to the 1pm game and that winner playing again in prime time at 7pm to advance to the Exhausted Eight on Saturday. Quarters, Semis and Finals will all be on Saturday. This three game marathon to close out the tourney will prove the strength of the champion and make the NCAA tourney seem like a cake walk.
Then again, maybe they won't... Let the speculation continue.

Of any state in the country that could pull this off it would be the state of hockey. There will be many family, friends, and fans cheering on the Minnesota players.

Agreed and I think the X could still make money even if there was a significant reduction in attendance. My only concern in where the playoffs would be is that I'd like it on an NHL size ice sheet.

Big ice is ok with NMU...

The ice sheet in the X is 85 x 200.

And UAA, SCSU, and Mankato.

Four of the six WCHA rinks in 2013 will be Olympic sized. If they can be the "National Collegiate Hockey Conference," I demand the WCHA change it's name to the "Olympic Collegiate Hockey Conference."

I can just see the marketing: "We're BIGGER than B1G!"
