WCHA Thread IV

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Can someone tell me why a womens college coach would coach the boys CCM/USA prospects game?

1) Someone asked him to do so.
2) It's still hockey.
3) It didn't conflict in any way with his job.
4) He thought it would be fun.

Before he became a women's coach, he coached men. I don't understand why it would be an issue.
Hmmm. I'll be keeping a close eye on UW in the future...in case MJ tries to sneak a couple guys onto his roster.

OR, also ... the game was held in Pittsburgh, and he played in the NHL for the Penguins for a part of his pro career.

The other coach, Joe Mullen, was also a former Pittsburgh Penguin.

5) Why the hell wouldn't he?

Re: WCHA Thread IV

His dad (Badger Bob)was also the Head Coach of the 1990-1991 Pittsburgh Penguins when they won their first Stanley Cup...The owner of the Penguins, Mario Lemieux, has "It's a great day for hockey" slogans posted all over the new arena in Pittsburgh! Makes total sense to have Mark Johnson coach in this event. Joe Mullen was on that Stanley Cup winning team as well!

Uh cause he's a womens coach and god knows we need all the help we can get. We all know MJ is dying to coach the men's team at UW, but if you are a womens D1 coach I think you should get your name recognized with that gender! I actually would be insulted if he was my coach. I'd rather see him at a girls prospects tournament (which by the way I've never, ever seen him roaming the rinks of any girls development camp or high level game) but fine Ill accept that he did it for fun and that there must not have been any conflict with a womens tournament that weekend right? Just my opinion.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Are you kidding me? "Recognized with that gender"? He was the 2010 Womens Olympic Coach and he has won 4 NCAA National Titles! What more can he do as a womens coach? I don't think ANY of his players were insulted that he did this! Also, he was in Lake Placid for the U-18 USA-Canada series in August. Does those games qualify as high enough level for you? You are way off on this one!!

plus he coached the 2009 team to gold in IIHF world championship (and once more to silver I think) and the 4 nations cup team twice to silver

son of a famous coach, one of WI best players, Olympic & pro player, he not only brought hockey in WI to another level, he brought the entire WCHA & NCAA women's game to a new level (note all the coaching changes since he arrived)

I have personally seen him at both Beantown and USA Hockey Nationals. Why be so negative towards someone who has done so much for women's hockey?

Re: WCHA Thread IV

1. He was spotted in the Twin Cities at a Prospect weekend at least once this summer.
2. When Lindenwood joined the ranks of D1 three years ago, Mark Johnson stepped up and offered them a series every year--I believe he was the impetus for other WCHA teams doing the same. Not sure if it's forever or just until they get on their feet. There's obviously no advantage for Wisconsin to schedule a brand new program, but he did it for Women's hockey. He's a class act. So stifle yourself.

I saw him at Beantown as well, just a few spots over from where I was sitting. That was the good news. It was frankly kind of humbling yet flattering to have him there scouting. The bad news is I could have sworn he had one of these  as he watched what was happening on the ice in front of him!

Re: WCHA Thread IV

People I know who play fantasy football say it makes the season more interesting
although I think it is interesting as is, here is my attempt at fantasy WCHA hockey:

Minnesota 25-2-1 75
North Dakota 20-7-1 61
Wisconsin 17-9-2 53
Ohio State 14-13-1 43
UMD 13-12-3 42
Mankato 5-20-3 18
St. Cloud 5-20-3 18
Bemidji 5-21-2 17

I actually looked at the games, rather than just modified from last year
but it turned out exactly like last year other than MN & Mankato which will drop points while UND gains (I don't do shootouts)
I think UND could challenge for the title but I think they will be losing players to their National teams throughout the year
after last weekend I'm rethinking OSU ahead of UMD, but it isn't fair to change after the season starts so I'm sticking with this
shouldn't there be a new WCHA thread soon, so I don't look like an idiot next March?

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Conference action coming up:

St. Cloud State @ Ohio State

Wisconsin @ Minnesota

Minnesota-Duluth @ North Dakota

I fully expect to be proven incorrect in at least one of the following prognostications...but, I'm going with...

a sweep for OSU, Minnesota and the Whio...uh, I mean North Dakota. I expect each series to be very competitive.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Are Bemidji State and Minnesota State dead to you because they are playing out of conference? The Mavericks play two at Lindenwood; the Beavers host Robert Morris for a pair.

Yes, and I know.

I'm restricting my absurdity to conference games this weekend.

If you are proven to be incorrect on one of your prognostications, I'm hoping it's the last one!

Re: WCHA Thread IV

If he wanted the UW men's job, would we fault him? Most people do aspire to jobs at the same organization for which they are qualified that pay better.
