WCHA Thread IV

Re: WCHA Thread IV

If he wanted the UW men's job, would we fault him? Most people do aspire to jobs at the same organization for which they are qualified that pay better.

The Badgers' men's team is projected to finish first in the new Big10 Conference. If they do, and go on to qualify for the NCAA tournament, Mike Eaves' job going forward is assured. If they don't meet expectations, his job COULD be on the line, at which point Mark Johnson COULD be a candidate to replace him. But I suspect that nothing will change in the next few years, and both will retain their current jobs...for which they are very qualified.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Uh cause he's a womens coach and god knows we need all the help we can get. We all know MJ is dying to coach the men's team at UW, but if you are a womens D1 coach I think you should get your name recognized with that gender! I actually would be insulted if he was my coach. I'd rather see him at a girls prospects tournament (which by the way I've never, ever seen him roaming the rinks of any girls development camp or high level game) but fine Ill accept that he did it for fun and that there must not have been any conflict with a womens tournament that weekend right? Just my opinion.

Johnson was one of the reasons Sauer got forced to retire when he was the recruiting coordinator for Sauer. Johnson didn't put the road time in that he needed to to evaluate the talent pool. Your comment about never seeing him around girl's games is interesting, it adds credence to the stories floating around. On the UW site, there's a questionnaire for women's recruits to fill out, I've always wondered if more often than not they just go him him vs him searching them out. Anyway, I would not be in favor of him coaching the men's team.

I think you'll find similar forms / questionaires on the sites of other programs as well. I can vouch for the accuracy of comments regarding MJ and UW coaching staff being present at events scouting or evaluating potential recruits.

FWIW, I've seen him scouting. There's only one WCHA coach within a six-hour drive of the Twin Cities that I've never seen scouting potential Minnesota recruits, and long-time followers of the sport could likely guess who that might be.

For the most part, the assistants will scout. As for Johnson, I have seen him at events, and Johnson (in addition to Koch and Friesen) came and watched one of our pratices a few weeks ago.

As for scouting, one assistant from another school said places like Minnesota and Wisconsin don't "scout", they "choose". I thought that was hilarious but pretty true.

Let's see.....who might that be....

And, to give credit where due, both Brad Frost and Joel Johnson from Minnesota are regulars at a wide range of MN girl's off-season events (Elite League, Prospects weekends, tournaments, etc). Most college coaches/assistants rarely scout the regular season MN girl's games, since in the words of one "a root canal is less painful" (overheard one year at a tournament). Mark Johnson is less visible, but the red Wisconsin jackets on the assistant coaches are almost as prevalent as the guys from Minny :).

I see Coach Johnson quite often at tournaments and showcases. He also has the advantage of having a top program that attracts top talent..blue chip talent. He doesn't have to go out and beat the bushes and turn over rocks to find players so I wouldn't worry about his recruiting efforts.

Final From Saturday, September 12th
Ohio State 4
St. Cloud State 2

Strong Start, Steadfast Finish
The Buckeyes came out strong and determined, controlling the first two periods and building a 3-0 lead. But then the scene shifts to the third period. The Huskies deserve a ton of credit for mounting a furious charge, outshooting the home team 16-5 in the final frame. The Buckeyes weathered the storm. But observers will likely differ on how to interpret the result. On the optimistic side, OSU played more than well enough to win. On the skeptical side, it could be claimed that the Buckeyes let a visiting team hang around too long, making the final minutes all too interesting. There's probably some truth to both perspectives. But successfully preserving the win sure beats the alternative.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Kari Schmitt
A piece of outstanding hand/eye coordination launched the first scoring play. At the defensive blue line, Kari plucked a knee-high puck out of mid-air, directing it to d-partner and sister Sara Schmitt. With Sara's strong breakout pass, both earned assists on the play. Kari also bagged the important insurance goal. Taking aim from up high on the right side, the left-handed shooter took advantage of the favorable angle and found the inside of the left post.

St. Cloud State Honorable Mention: Audrey Hanmer
Strong and fast, and something of a quarterback on ice, Audrey is clearly one of the Huskies' leaders. All her hard work paid off on the second St. Cloud goal, when her shot from the right point was tipped in by Molli Mot.

#3 Star: Kendall Curtis, Ohio State
Welcome to the star list, #26! Kendall's GWG was a nicely placed shot just inside the right post. Curtis finished her hardworking day at a well earned +1.

#2 Star: Abby Ness, St. Cloud State
Abby is a creative offensive force, and was able produce a goal and an assist in this tilt. On her goal, Julia Gilbert and Mollie Mot struggled to maintain possession in the neutral zone, with Mott finally steering the puck in Ness' direction. From just inside her own blue line, Abby took off on a solo dash that Bobby Orr would have been pleased with. The goal got SCSU back into the game, setting up the interesting finish.

#1 Star: Danielle Gagne, Ohio State
Danielle came ready to play today, and we're certainly glad she did. She both opened the scoring and assisted on the GWG. On the goal, she wheeled into the slot. Appearing to use a defender as a screen, Gagne lasered the puck into the upper lefthand corner. On the game winner, she stole a puck at the defensive blue line and carried the puck into the offensive zone. From there she directed the puck to Curtis, who was only too happy to finish the job. Danielle was +2 on the day, which reflects a full game of noticeably strong effort.

Next Up: Road Trip to North Dakota

If you are proven to be incorrect on one of your prognostications, I'm hoping it's the last one!
well...got the most important one right...;)

Conference action coming up:

St. Cloud State @ Ohio State

Wisconsin @ Minnesota

Minnesota-Duluth @ North Dakota

I fully expect to be proven incorrect in at least one of the following prognostications...but, I'm going with...

a sweep for OSU, Minnesota and the Whio...uh, I mean North Dakota. I expect each series to be very competitive.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Coming up this weekend in the WCHA:

Minnesota @ Minnesota-Duluth

Ohio State @ North Dakota

St. Cloud State @ Wisconsin

Lindenwood @ Bemidji State

No end in the immediate field of vision, Minnesota takes two. Very tall order just the same. Rookies are learning what it takes, courtesy UW most recently.

North Dakota sweeps with scant discomfort.

Wisconsin sweeps. SCSU 'tenders with large save numbers but still, too many shots...you can't stop 'em all...and Rigsby is very stingy this weekend.

Beavers win the opener, L'wood the rematch.

Mavericks go undefeated this weekend.

Edit: Minnesota @ Minnesota Duluth: Officials suffer the verbal abuse you can set your clock by. Not yet having learned to ignore and disregard...after all these years.

Following up on the injury to WCHA referee Dave Spivey in Friday night's Minnesota/Minnesota-Duluth game...

A friend of a friend found out that Spivey has a "fractured humerus up near where it goes into shoulder."

Despite any animosity we might display toward officials during the game :o , we obviously wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

Indeed. His fall was right in front of me and I immediately thought it looked serious as he didn't appear to have any chance to break his fall.

It was a strange night. Apparently, in addition to the above, the announcer at ice level suffered a heart attack during the game...at the very least, he was rushed to the hospital where Hanson, who is his best friend, after cutting short the post game wrap went to visit him.

Hanson commented during last night's game that everything seemed to be ok with the announcer and didn't elaborate beyond that that I heard.

The week ahead.

How about a split in Mankato? Yeah...that's what I'm going with.

North Dakota wins two on the road, I suspect.

Wisconsin...*yawn...zzzzzzzz... *Indicates a sweep for UW.

I've seen the Beavers give very good Gopher teams fits more often than I care to recall...as well as beat very good Gopher teams a time or two. Not in this series though. Sweep for Minnesota.
