Re: WCHA Thread IV

Minnesota-Duluth

With junior Jenna McParland leading the way, the Bulldogs should boast a productive top-six. The loss of Pernilla Winberg and Katie Wilson hurt, but both put up under 20 points each last year, so it won’t be so much to adjust to. Junior forward Zoe Hickel should take another step forward and become even more productive this season, and Jamie Kenyon’s a good secondary scorer. The addition of freshmen Demi Crossman and Ashleigh Brykaliuk, as well as transfer Meghan Huertas, will also be a big plus.

Things are much less clear for UMD’s defense. They’re losing star defensemen Brigette Lacquette to the Canadian national team and Jessica Wong to graduation, which leaves two gaping holes on the blue line. But although things might be a bit rocky, they should still be able to put together a serviceable defensive corps. Jordan Krause and Tea Villila have experience, and incoming freshmen Sidney Morin and Lara Stalder are both talented. The Bulldogs need a big year out of sophomore goaltender Kayla Black, who was a bit inconsistent last season but was able to solidify herself as the go-to starter.

Key Player: Jenna McParland

She’s got great potential and needs to return to the 20-goal-scoring form she was in her freshman year to help make Minnesota-Duluth’s offense threatening.

Outlook

The Bulldogs should have a very competitive squad this year but I think there are certain aspects where they can’t quite match up with the WCHA’s top teams. I see them finishing fourth in the standings, with a chance to climb higher depending on how the team executes over the course of the year.

Did I miss it? Is it possible that as of this moment, there is no 2013-2014 UMD Season Thread? W T F?! A couple of lackluster seasons and that's it?

Was there some sort of gag order issued unbeknownst to the women's college hockey universe? This is most perplexing.

Hush. You'll jinx it.

Good crowd for the Huskies (400), most likely because of the renovations.

There were many Japanese students at the game. Most had SCSU gear on, but would cheer loudly for BOTH teams! Team Japan was appreciative of the support.

Redford and Pena seemed like good freshman additions for the Huskies.

Miss Redford is a great kid and as hard a worker, both on and off the ice, as you could ever hope for.

Final From Saturday, September 28th
Toronto Aeros 2
Ohio State 1
(O.T.)

Resilient Aeros Grab Overtime Win
Despite being outshot and outchanced, the plucky Aeros found a way to grab a victory at the OSU Ice Rink Saturday. The Aeros were patient and hard-working; they deserved their upset win. The Buckeyes didn't play all that badly. Granted, they weren't entirely sharp. That's more or less what you'd expect in a season-opening exhibition game. Still, the Buckeye offense created a number of excellent chances. On the defensive side, the Visitors were held to 12 shots on goal. Again, not bad at all. But in the end, the Aeros made the big plays and the Buckeyes didn't.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Kari Schmitt, Ohio State and Annie Svedin, Ohio State
Kari and Annie both had strong games. They combined on the lone Buckeye goal to earn the mentions. Svedin held the puck in at right point, then sent it across to Schmitt on the left. Shrugging off the long range opportunity, Schmitt carried the puck half way, then buried a shot from the left circle. In the end, they were the only two Buckeyes to finish in positive territory in the plus/minus.

#3 Star: (tie) Lindsay Wray, Toronto Aeros and Brynna Kerr, Toronto Aeros
The Toronto goalies made several spectacular saves on point blank shots. Kerr in particular was brilliant with both her pads and glove. Had either goalie turned in her performance over the course a full game, we'd be talking #1 Star. Since it was a shared effort, we'll let them split the #3. They both need to be on the list; both were integral to the win.

#2 Star: Cora Constantinou, Toronto Aeros
Cora opened the scoring with a great individual effort. First, she blocked and controlled a shot in her defensive end. Next Constantinou carried the puck the length of the ice and found some space to beat the Buckeye goalie. Obviously this was a huge breakthrough. Besides providing a temporary lead, it gave the Aeros a big boost -- and the confidence that they were in the game to the end.

#1 Star: Jessie Eldridge, Toronto Aeros
Gotta go with the overtime goal scorer at the top of the list. Jessie combined with Kaitlin Tse on a little give and go play, and Eldridge's quick release shot found the back of the net. Just as impressive as the goal itself was the perseverance needed to get there. When the Buckeyes tied the score late in regulation, a lesser team might have become unglued. Instead, the Aeros redoubled their efforts and found a way to win. Well done; sincere congratulations.

Next Up: Road Trip to Mercyhurst.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

One WCHA conference series coming up...as well as some NC action. Looks like the Beavers are idle.

Minnesota State @ Wisconsin

Minnesota @ Colgate

Ohio State @ Mercyhurst

Quinnipiac @ St. Cloud State

Connecticut @ Minnesota-Duluth

Lindenwood @ North Dakota

Can the Mavs win one in Madison? I believe they can.

Lindenwood is gonna get smoked.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Lindenwood has a very good goalie, and I remember from when Vogt was at Mankato or Tomcikova at Bemidji how a goalie can make a huge difference in keeping a score respectable.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I've been reading some posts indicating L'wood may have some injury issues at present. I look at results vs. Bemidji.

I think L'wood takes it on the chin in Grand Forks. Call it a bold prediction if you like. ;)

The last time the Lions played in G.F., they lost 14-0. I don't think that they'll get beat by that type of margin this time. Lindenwood should offer more resistance than P.O.E., injuries considered.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I did find the North Dakota season preview very interesting. Both for it's mention of the potential irony of a reasonable possibility for their first WCHA title coming immediately after the twins departure, an irony I had also pondered...and for the points regarding the potential roster inconsistency UND may have to overcome at various, and pretty key moments during the season. It will be interesting to see what happens in that regard.

WCHA season preview's a good read.

I will be interested to see Frosts management of Minnesota this year - lots of go to stars are gone and chemistry of team was seemingly very good last year......and of course the perfect season that they will be measured against. A tough act to follow especially with Raty gone.....seemed like she wouldn't let the team fail the past two years.

Any word of a video/book about last year?

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Can someone tell me why a womens college coach would coach the boys CCM/USA prospects game?
1) Someone asked him to do so.
2) It's still hockey.
3) It didn't conflict in any way with his job.
4) He thought it would be fun.

Before he became a women's coach, he coached men. I don't understand why it would be an issue.
