Re: WCHA Thread IV

North Dakota @ Bemidji State?

Hopefully the Beavers won't experience a letdown after almost toppling the Gophers on Saturday. A win (or two?) against heavily favored UND would certainly be a much-needed confidence builder.

Minnesota State @ Minnesota
Minnesota @ Minnesota State

If you read the script correctly following the Bemidji series, the Gophers learned a lesson to not take any team in the WCHA for granted. I'm in the camp that says this year's team cannot rely on superior talent alone to beat ANY conference team, and this very much applies to a much improved Mavericks squad that is very capable and will definitely will be motivated to spring an upset. Gophers better be ready - both days.

St. Cloud State @ Minnesota-Duluth

St. Cloud is coming off five successive losses, but the last four have come against very strong Badger and UND teams, so they should be ready for a fast pace and aggressive style of play. I think SCSU is entirely capable of stealing one from the Bulldogs if they come in with the right mindset and get a bounce or two.

Ohio State @ Wisconsin

The Buckeyes have had a bye week to rest up and prepare, but I think the Badgers' very stout defense/goaltending will make it real tough for OSU to score more that a goal or two in each game. To win they will have to be equally strong in net (not easy) and capitalize on the few good chances they're likely to get.

I agree that the Gophers need to remain on their toes. That said...

Minnesota State was "much improved" last year over 2011-2012, but I haven't seen any signs of additional improvement yet. When the Mavs have played Mercyhurst before, it's always been close and they've occasionally gotten a win, so the season opener was an upset but less surprising than some other results I've seen out east this year. MSU's other two wins this year were against Lindenwood, and they didn't take a single standings point from UMD, something they've been able to do at home in the past.

The Mavericks strengths this year are a) Danielle Butters in her second year as the starter; b) six senior forwards, so they are very solid up front. Their problems are a) I think they miss Emelia Andersson on the blue line, plus they lost Erika Magnusson; b) nobody up front quite matches the impact that Lauren Smith gave them offensively.

one game is not enough to judge a team by, but I thought they played a solid game defensively Saturday, their main problem is their power play, and a general inability to score (ala Wisconsin)

Michelle Karvinen, Rachel Ramsey, and Sidney Morin are this week's WCHA Offensive, Defensive, and Rookie of the week:
http://www.wcha.com/women/pres1314/201310/oct30wpw.php

yes, Ramsey was on the ice for 3 of 4 Gopher goals Friday, but she was also on the ice for all 3 Beaver goals Saturday (and also for 2 of the Gophers 4 goals)

you have to take these weekly awards with a grain of salt, they seldom take into account a players defensive game

I concur

looks like you called that correctly

And does anyone else feel the goaltending in the WCHA is the best it has ever been?

I'm not sure. A couple of seasons back, Bemidji State had Tomcikova, Minnesota had Räty, and UMD had Harss. It would be hard to make a case that those three teams are now better. UND is better, Rigsby has likely improved at Wisconsin, as has Friend at SCSU. Butters is better than the Altmann/Butters tandem of two years back and Ohio State is roughly the same. It would be close in either direction. There were also some strong years when Vetter was at Wisconsin and Martin was at UMD.

Recaps from the recent weekend. Top three have started pretty strong...keeping #2 and #3 well within striking distance of Minnesota. Any slip ups or an off night will bite ya.

Disappointed the Buckeyes couldn't pilfer some pts. in Madtown. North Dakota gets to rest up before the series at Ridder...while the possibility for a rough & tumble looms for Minnesota in the meantime.

Bemidji State @ Ohio State

Minnesota @ St. Cloud State

Just two series for the weekend ahead. Bemidji State needs some points.

Ohio State could really use a series sweep. Not at all sure what to expect. No predictions.

little over a week ago I was toolin' down eastbound 94 near St. Cloud. Swear I saw a billboard with a picture of Jason Lesteberg with "Do you miss me yet?" caption in large box text. ;)

Believe me, I was disappointed that we couldn't get a couple points in Madison. Mrs 86 and I made the trip. We played better Sunday than we had on Saturday but we still couldn't get a W. I agree wholeheartedly that we could use six points this weekend!

Final From Friday, November 8th
Bemidji State 3
Ohio State 2

Rare 5x3 Shorty Propels Bemidji to Victory
Midway through the 2nd Period, the Buckeyes held a 1-0 lead and had a lengthy 5x3 PP opportunity. It truly looked like the Buckeyes were about to take control of the game. Instead, a nice 2 on 1 counterattack resulted in a tying goal for Bemidji. From there, the Beavers road a wave of momentum, bagging 2 more goals in the next 8 minutes. The Buckeyes battled back gamely in the 3rd period, but were only able to add a single tally.

Regrettably, this game will be remembered for the altercation that occurred just after the final horn. As both teams skated to congratulate or console their respective goalies, a confrontation transpired at the Bemidji blue line that quickly enveloped both teams. I've got to believe that a number of players from both squads will be DQed from tomorrow's game. The accomplishments noted below will most likely be forgotten in all the excitement. That's a shame, because the players listed certainly deserve the recognition.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

#3 Star: Hanna Moher, Bemidji State
The eventual GWG came off Hanna's stick, and it was certainly no gimme. I'd describe it as a "3rd Effort" goal. Moher battled through a tough Buckeye defense, slid across the slot and finally scored off her own rebound.

#2 Star: Kayla Sullivan, Ohio State
Sully nailed the lower left hand corner of the net with a well-placed, ice hugging shot. Kayla's goal capped a nice rush started by Kari Schmitt, along with a give and go pass from Danielle Gagne.

#1 Star: Tess Dusik, Bemidji State
Tess may be listed as a 3rd Line Center, but she's so much more than that. Using her wide wingspan to excellent advantage, Dusik logs plenty of minutes both 5x5 and on special teams. Her special teams effort today culminated in the 3x5 goal described above. Now I've seen a lot of hockey of the years, but I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a 3x5 tally. This one was worth the wait. Receiving a fine pass across the goal mouth from Ivana Bilic, Tess pounded the puck into the right side of the net.

Granted, the altercation will be long remembered. But the Dusik shorty provided the crucial turning point of the game.

Next Up: Rematch with Bemidji State; Face-off at 4:07 PM (EST) Expect reduced numbers on both benches.

Holy s***.

Box score: http://www.collegehockeystats.net/1314/boxes/wbmjosu1.n08

287 minutes in penalties issued from that fracas.

I'm not sure how this is going to work. 19 players -- 9 from BSU, 10 from OSU -- received game disqualification penalties, which include mandatory one-game suspensions. I'm wondering if they'll be enforced today (the next game, as usual) or staggered so that the two teams can have enough players on the bench. Given that the two teams play each other, they may all sit today.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see some supplemental disciplinary action from the WCHA, particularly for Julia McKinnon for drawing the instigating penalty.

EDIT: This was listed in the press release from the league recapping the game:
Each player who received a DQ will have to sit out [Saturday]'s contest.

Okay...I'll ask. Are we talking about initial actions due to poor sportsmanship after a tough, emotional loss?
