Re: Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

The Beaver Radio Network is reporting Steve Sertich will be announcing his retirement as Bemidji State's women's hockey coach. Press conference to be held at the Sanford Center at 3 PM Central online at http://newschannel1300.com/listen.php

A little surprising...then again not entirely. Been behind one bench or another for a long time. His Roseville teams as well as the Beavers always gave it 110%. Among the classy coaches IMO. Best wishes to *Serty in the future!

*As a mutual acquaintance refers to Mr. Sertich.

Is it 'darning with faint praise' to say Sertich did about as well as one could given the circumstances and the competition? I was always a little nervous when Wisconsin was going against him and Bemidji.

(USCHO made me edit from what the usual phrase would be.)

I have yet to meet anyone from around the WCHA who didn't have the utmost respect for the job that Sertich did at Bemidji State. When he got there, his players were s - l - o - w. He did well at upgrading the talent so that his teams could compete on the ice, if not always on the scoreboard.

I don't think so. I've thought the very same regarding those circumstances. I think the location is a tough sell when it comes to the majority of top talent. Little doubt in my mind his teams would compete with conference powers given similar talent. Good coach.

Just curious...why is this not surprising?

Just curious...why is this not surprising?
An assumption on my part that Sertich may feel he's done all he could at BSU...in addition to another assumption he may feel he has been coaching long enough and ready for a little downtime.

If I ever run into our mutual friend maybe I'll ask...but it's not really my business. I am curious to see who steps in of course.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I always thought Sertich prepared his team as well as anyone to play the Gophers and with Tomcikova's play they could steal a game or at least make it close once in awhile. He was almost always stoic on the bench and seemed more interested in teaching his players than in whining to the officials unlike a certain other northern Minnesota hockey coach. Their program will miss him.

Any thoughts or news on a replacement for Sara Martin? Stepping down in June if I recall.

I have a feeling that I, in the near future, will be wishing Sara Martin had never decided to step down.

After about the dozenth phone call from a certain long-tenured coach, Martin's replacement will be wishing that Martin had not retired.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Maybe he'll be to able to give the head of officials some idea on what a penalty actually looks like and he'll make sure the refs can raise their arms straight over their heads while the puck is in play.

From Charley Walters Pioneer Press column today:

Former Gophers women's hockey coach Laura Halldorson, a Princeton grad, was a finalist and would have been perfect as the WCHA women's commissioner but didn't get the job.
