WCHA Thread IV

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Very slow start but Gophers seemed to wear the Dawgs down and dominated the second half of the game.

Tomorrow they can end another team's season, but will need to have a better start than they did tonight as the Whioux will give it everything they've got, right from the opening faceoff. A much tougher team to come back against.

Re: Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

Attendance figures of 664 and just over 700. Wonder if this would give the WCHA pause when considering a return to Sanford at any point. Nice looking building though...so I would hope not, ultimately.

A little tempted to make the drive tomorrow. We'll see.

Would require a power nap 'til say...2:00 pm...;)

Re: Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

The first game today was dreadful. Other than Sarah Nurse, Wisconsin was MIA. North Dakota was one goal better than that. Duluth would have smoked either of those teams.

The second game was very, very good. I'm going to disagree with some people; the Gophers started slow for about the first 8-10 minutes but after that they were clearly the better team the rest of the way. The second period ended tied because Duluth converted one of only two chances that they had in the period. Minnesota just strangled them to death in the third.

The Bulldogs played hard, played well but they were the second best team at the Sanford Center today and it wasn't close in either direction.

I was impressed with Milica McMillen in one very important way tonight. She played a weak first period and was awful in the second, with bad passes and dumb penalties, most of which weren't called. Then she did something that I can't remember seeing from her before: she got herself under control and played a very strong third. It wasn't just that she scored the third goal; she was making better decisions and played solidly and with a purpose. So kudos on figuring something out that I hope stays figured out.

North Dakota is going to have to step it up a lot tomorrow if they want their season to continue. They did that in Minneapolis back in November and we'll see if they can do it again.

I thought Amsley-Benzie was very good vs UW. She made some huge saves early to keep her team level. I thought Ammerman let go a number of tricky shots that could have hit the net on a different day. The Badgers also had one D that was worse than the first 40 minutes of McMillen.

I didn't think McMillen was alone in her struggles. Over the first 30 minutes or so, there were too many Gophs reaching for the puck instead of moving their feet. UMD caused a lot of UM's problems, but I thought the top seed also had a number of fundamental flaws early on that we don't usually see. Maybe they were a little too amped, and UMD was definitely getting in a few heads. It isn't fun getting tackled and having the opposing coach scream, "Call the dive!"

I can hear the Minnesota band and I can see Goldy.

UMD band?
Only North Dakota had a band yesterday. If you heard the rouser, it was piped in or led by CrazyDave.

Re: Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

Expecting a good game tonight. Including a better 60 minutes from Minnesota. North Dakota the only team to hand Minnesota losses in a pretty long stretch.

Amsley-Benzie played quite well in the semi. As she has vs. Minnesota in the past. Did they address who might start tonight in the presser last night? Idalski seems completely confident in both Shaw and Amsley-Benzie. Didn't catch it if they did. Heard some deserved complementary talk about Amsley-Benzie. The last two seasons...the best I've seen NoDak play has been vs. Minnesota. A big part of why I expect a battle. A "crisper" start for Minnesota would be fine by me.

Go Gophers!

Aiming to achieve goal #2 of 3.

Yeah, this is no time for probing! Come out and bury them from the get-go, I say. ;)

S A-B has started and won all three of the team's playoff games this year, and after a 35-save shutout yesterday, it didn't seem like an open question to me.

Or if you do plan to probe, hold your guard up and not out at your sides like you're Ali! I doubt anybody gets buried from the get-go tonight, as satisfying as that might be. Good teams don't like to go quietly into the night.

Good teams don't like to go quietly into the night.

But BETTER teams like to see that they do! Impose your will, Gophers!

How about the video quality sharpens up...plays "crisper" in the final?

Okay...probably not.

How's the drive to Bemidji? I'm assuming that I'll see you and D2D there.

We would but you hardly ever come down from your high perch in the press box to talk to us anymore! :(
