WCHA Thread III

Re: WCHA Thread III

Easy call to forecast that the Huskies hit bottom in 2010-11, as it would be very difficult for any team to do any worse. I agree 100% with Brooky that they'll be VERY motivated to get couple of wins early, and would further speculate that having an experienced new assistant like Fetter on board should help them gain confidence and improve over the course of the coming season. I'll be rooting for them on MOST weekends! :)

Re: WCHA Thread III

Some off-season prognosticating on WCHA pre-season recognition picks.

For POTY I have to go with Hillary Knight of the Badgers. Decker and Kessel could be considered as well but I'd guess coaches go with Knight.

ROTY is a very tough call with the quality of the freshmen joining several rosters. Many could prove worthy of this one; some of those who figure to be in the running:

Wisconsin
Katy Josephs.............F ............(CAN 18s/Highwood Raiders) ............Calgary, AB
Karley Sylvester ........F ..................(USA 18s/Warroad) .................Warroad, MN
Blayre Turnbull ..........F.....................(CAN 18s/SSM) .....................Stellarton, NS

Ohio State
Taylor Kuehl ........................F .........(USA 18's/Mound Westonka) ............Minnetrista, MN

North Dakota
Layla Marvin ..........................F ...............(USA 18s/Warroad) ......................Warroad, MN
Ceclila Ostberg ..................... F ............(Swedish National Team) ............Leksand, Sweden

I recall some talk of Marvin possibly delaying her rookie season via red shirt. Also, probably have to add the European who was expected to join the team last season...a national team player I believe...sorry, her name escapes me.

Minnesota-Duluth
Jenna McParland ..................F ............(CAN 18s/Toronto Aeros) ..................Thunder Bay, ON

Minnesota
Stephanie Anderson ..............F .........(USA 18s/MN Thoroughbreds) ..................N. St Paul, MN
Rachel Bona ..........................F .............(USA 18's/Coon Rapids) ..................Coon Rapids, MN
Meghan Lorence ....................F .................(USA 18's/Irondale) .....................Moundsview, MN

There's quite a few very talented and highly regarded D joining several rosters also that will no doubt be worthy of ROTY. All forwards here as I think they have an edge when it comes to the vote. Not intended as a "complete" list by any means.

So...my homer pick, Meghan Lorence. So much talent being added to WCHA rosters. Looking at the commitments I'd wager the ROTY comes from one of The Big Three.

Add anyone you feel deserves mention if you feel inclined. *As always, please don't hesitate to tell me I'm dead wrong.

I'll take a shot at 1st and 2nd teams at some point.

*Unless you're one of the UMD fan clowns incapable of objectivity.

Brooky- Thanks for your attempt at showing UMD some love, but it's pretty likely that Ms. Jordansson won't be joining the squad this year. Of course, it's third hand info and I hope that I'm wrong.

In that case I'll remove her from consideration for an All Rookie team as well.

It would be nice to have all the official 2011-2012 rosters released before long.

Would be nice as I'm sure Coach Miller would love to fill that position to someone (if that's even plausible at this late date) but it's entirely up to the NCAA Clearinghouse which doesn't seem to work on the schedule of the needs of the program. From what I understand, the clearinghouse is harder to work through if you are from anywhere but the US. Any Canuks care to weigh in? To be fair, I've heard that the player in question either is deciding to not come this year AND I've separately heard that she was still working through the clearinghouse process. Not sure I'll ever know.

Not much to indicate it's a problem for the Canadian player from the point of view of someone generally uninformed on the topic.

Re: WCHA Thread III

You couldn't get through one exchange without a dig, could you?

I've been informed, a fair amount, from sources such as coached. But not having gone thru it personally or had a daughter, I thought it might be an interesting topic to hear from those who have. And I used Canada since there are a fair amount of Maple Leafers on the forum.

A likely pick for PotY, and given she was preseason PotY last season, I'd imagine the coaches will be very willing to vote for her.

As for RotY, I'm less inclined to agree. Karvinen at UND could be in the running. I'd expect one of the UMD freshmen, either Bridgette Lacquette or McParland, to win it. Outside of Ramsey, I don't see the other Gopher rookies getting that much ice early on, and the Badgers may be in a similar boat.

Most likely the more complicated the scholastic background, the slower and more unpredictable the clearinghouse will be. It isn't strictly an international problem, though. Winny Brodt had to delay her freshman year at UNH because she couldn't get approval. The NCAA is slow at best, and I doubt women's hockey gets much of the NCAA's best.

UUTF are you talking about? If you consider that a dig you truly have no business in a public forum. You have a chip the size of *** Texas on your shoulder. Do you ever have a conversation when the other participant isn't picking on poor little you?

I believe she's the player I did reference, not knowing her name.

We'll see. I'm not as convinced as most the rookie forwards are going to get minimal ice time. Of course if the bulk of those returning start burning it up early...could be.

Yeah, but you picked Lorence, who I agree has a boatload of talent, just don't see her getting enough prime opportunities.

As for the comment that set off the latest shenanigans, it could be read as self deprecating or a dig. I now realize that you meant it as the former, but upon my initial read I thought it was a dig. In a perfect world, somebody would say, "Oops, my bad!" when these things happen, and we could stick to talking about hockey and avoid all of these trips down memory lane.

Okay. ;) I'm just not likely to claim fault when I think my meaning is clear and easily understood. I'd say more...but wisely, I think I'll call it a day.

Also, regarding Karvinen, it's difficult for me to pick anyone I have no recollection of ever watching her play. I don't think I've had the pleasure.

She skated on the Finnish team's top line at the last Olympics, so she got quite a bit of TV time. Anyway, based on the reputations of Lacquette and McParland and the needs of the team that they are joining, I'd guestimate an 80% chance that one of those two Bulldogs winds up honored as the RotY. I've never watched them play, though. ;)

McParland, extra year. ;)

Ooooo, now there's a dig of epic proportions! You couldn't get through one exchange without a dig. :)

I knew the future Sioux forward was an Olympian but honestly have no recollection of watching her play, even if I may have. As for Lacquette and McParland you may be right and I don't doubt their skills but again, I couldn't pick one of them for RotY based on reputation without having seen them play. I don't take my own off season diversionary prognostications very seriously, but for a predicted recognition for an individual player I gotta go with someone I've seen. Narrows the options considerably.

If I did, you'd think somebody had stolen my login.

As for the quest for 600 taking too long, I'm betting it arrives before #7's second of the season.

That's a good bet. Don't think Big Jim is getting anywhere near the at bats he had in 2010 though. Wracked by injury...but not playing "Twins" baseball for the most part with too many errors which is uncharacteristic of a typical Twins team. Too many "extra" outs for opponents. What a season. :(

...and the relief pitching...don't get me started.

Still waiting on a couple 2011-2012 WCHA rosters.
