WCHA Thread III

Re: WCHA Thread III

What a mess! So many different parties involved, making it very difficult to forecast the eventual outcome...
With yesterday's decision by the NCAA I am willing to forecast that it will very soon be the North Dakota Fighting something elses.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I still like Fighting Soo in honor of the railroad.
That would be great for their rivalry with NDSU (assuming there still is one after both programs changed conferences.) They could have a logo of a bison run over by a train, although that would just get them into PC hot water again.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I still stand by a previous comment I made that the NCAA should grow a pair and make Florida State, Utah, Illinois and other schools that still have the Native American names and make them change. In my opinion it's BS that the NCAA has a double standard. If one is forced to change, they all should be forced to.

While I do not think the NCAA should be involving itself at all in this sort of thing, I believe that the schools you have mentioned approached and received essentially a green light from the local tribal groups whose names they have adopted. In the case of UND at least one the local Sioux tribes is opposed to the use of the name and it seems that opposition may be linked to the use of the term "The Fighting Sioux".

The NCAA seems to have its hands full with many other issues and in my opinion they should focus their resources there and let the individual schools address issues such as mascots and team names.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Would agree with Lorence for RoTY. Has the speed and physical presence to contribute right away. She also has a quick release and is extremely accurate at close range. She also involves her teammates pretty consistently. As far as POTY I would watch Decker at WI. She was as consistent as Duggan or Knight in the half dozen games I saw last year. Just didn't have as many timely or highlight goals but works both ends of the ice harder than any center in the league. She would be a great role model for a young player to emulate. She is impressive. Not only works hard but moves the puck and then gets in position to get it back.. very unselfish

Small setback. All three Swedes recruited for this year will not be joining the 2011-12 Roster.
I don't know diddly about the Swedes who were originally going to be added to the UMD 2011-2012 roster but apparently now will not be joining the team...but I'll assume they are all talented players. So it would seem the field for potential RotY candidates may have been narrowed a little bit. I think I made a kind of an "on the side" prediction earlier when I selected Miss Lorence as my pre-season RotY pick...that the RotY would come from one of the UW, UMD & U of M trio. That thought may require adjustment now.

Decker as PotY is a very real possibility I'd agree. I picked Knight but actually bounced around between the two when contemplating the pick. Either way one has to figure UW will have at least a couple strong contenders. I have to make mention the Gophers have a few that wouldn't be at all unrealistic in consideration of PotY pre-season picks...particularly among their sophomore and senior classes. Yeah...UMD will have horses in the race too.

Edit: I had better include the twins of UND too for potential contenders for the latter award. Saw them in the Team USA camp scrimmage the other night. Thought they played the best I've ever seen them play and appeared improved over their already recognized ability. They could have big years.

Whats the status of Laroque with UMD.
Jocelyne Larocque? Thought she was a senior last season. In any case...difficult for a D to get a look for RotY...when it seems that the number of pts. racked up, or offense expectations are a very big factor with voters.

Some very good D joining WCHA rosters this season and next...ya never know. :)
