Re: WCHA First Round - UNO at SCSU
Personally, I have a very hard time having
any sort of animosity towards St Cloud on any level. UNO playing them is sorta a hard one for me.
My mom grew up there and her immediate family lived most of their lives there. My mom and her brother are both St Cloud State alums. My Grandmother's brother, Larry Anderson, played hockey for St. Cloud. Here he is, back row, third from the left:

Dunno how many times I have been to St. Cloud--hundreds. I mean, I love the House of Pizza. I've been eating there since the late '60's when I was a kid. Coming back from the Duluth/UNO series last March, we stayed in St. Cloud on the way back because the weather was so bad, ate at Granite City, and the wife and I purposely wore UNO gear in there. 3 different very friendly groups of folks stopped to talk hockey with us while we were there as a result. All wished us well in the NCAA's.
Hard to hurl any sort of invective at what you consider your home away from home and you have a lifetime of warm fuzzies about a place.
This series could go either way. UNO has a winning record on the road in conference play this season. UNO is, however, 4-8-2 since the first of the year. A lot of that is who we played in those 14 games, though (the likes of UMD, CC, Gophers, DU, etc., and Bemidji, who owns some sort of magic elixir they use when they play us since they have owned us). Our defense has really been bad this season and Sustr and Aneloski are the two most overrated players on the team and both are on defense. Our power play has steadily gotten worse since the season started and lately has been borderline ridiculous. Against DU last Friday night, for example, on 4 power plays we managed
three shots on goal. We have a very good penalty kill although we don't take a lot of penalties but we have taken an extraordinary number of stupid ones this season at the most inopportune times that have just burned us. UNO just broke the single season team record for short-handed goals (10) and leads the WCHA in that department and is #2 in the nation. Matt White has 4 of those. Our goaltending has been spotty with Massa being the best of the lot. We have an enormous team. To give you an idea, there are 6 guys on this team 6' 4" or
taller. Of our 6 defensemen that play a lot, 4 of them are 6' 4", 6' 4", 6' 6", & 6' 8". Our forwards can skate with anybody in this league.
The biggest problem with this team is youth and a total lack of any upper classmen leadership. There are only two seniors on the team and they don't play a lot and only 4 juniors and only 3 of them play. Plus, when it comes to shooting the puck, we are the gang that couldn't shoot straight. And, Coach Blais kicked our senior captain off the team mid-season for reasons unknown and he was not only the most popular player on the team with the fans, he was the one that made us go. We have not been the same team since. I did an analysis of UNO with and without Hudson a few weeks back in the UNO thread and I shudder to think what that would look like now. Our season pretty much went down the drain when he got booted. We also are currently bitten by the injury bug as Searfoss and Raubenheimer have both been out now for awhile and I don't know what their status is going forward here.
I think we sweep you, or, you sweep us. Which one is going to happen? With this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team, who the heck knows? Looks like your penalty kill is the one real Achilles heal that stands out. Since my dad always said good defense beats good offense every time, the edge has to go to SCSU who has a vastly better goalie than UNO and, as a team, has also given up less goals than UNO. I also think SCSU has played a bit tougher schedule, too. Couple that with home ice..............
