WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

The Badgers will make at least one game close.

That was a flipping understatement! Sconie D and goalie locking it down with house $ and making two extreme nail bitters. Glad to have life tomorrow. Winner gets the Cloudies. Great two games by a young Badger team. Tonight was more physical and end to end--more exciting to watch. Had to be one of the worst nights I've seen for Tim Walsh.

Magness says..." Get Ye to Magness for some Sunday Night Hockey!!!!"

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Any Minneapolis Badger fans know how I can tune into the game tomorrow? I just started using a smart tv device that has a HD connector, so if theres a live streaming I can watch it on my big screen, not a bad way to get its first use.

You can order it for like 9 bucks on the DU website.

I thought it was a terrible call. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but you can be in the crease as long as you don't impede the goaltender. Woods had a foot (or 2) in the crease, but Brittain had ample room to make the stop. Woods being in the crease didn't stop Brittain from stopping the puck.

I sit at center ice so I was too far away to say. I have not seen a replay. One thing is the review was very fast which makes me think they saw clear contact.

OK, redhawk, counting on you to bring the Pios some mojo tonight!
Jussi played well and we had our chances in the first two periods.
Gotta bring it now--puck in the net!

Done! Bring on Game 3!

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Both teams doing the donut on the PP through two games. DU outshoots UW in all three periods and plays a much better third tonight. About
1K more in attendance tonight--much better energy. I expect tomorrow's attendance to be the lowest of the three. DU announced at the game that handling fees would be dropped a clear sign that traffic is light.

Eaves pretty upbeat in his post game (as he should be) the Badgers have played great. The interview starts with him saying the refs told him that the guy was in the crease and that the goal tender couldn't make the save. Didn't skip a beat. McCabe said he and everyone else put it behind them and didn't think about it. Class act really--not like the Sioux when they were in here a few weeks back.

Because DU knows SO much about class...

I'd like to see the replay. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they screwed it up. They were messing up all kinds of things out there tonight.
Agreed. Officiating was terrible. Through 2 periods, there were a ridiculous number of no calls on obvious stuff, and after the refs swallowed their whistles, there was a lot of tomfoolery.

Kind of a shame that, since they made the bold move that is remaking college hockey, the BIG Network doesn't pick up Game 3 in Denver with Sconnie tonight. Props to FSN North as always for making the Gophers available to us with satellite service, as well as the NoDak game (continued poor production quality on the latter, but hey, it's college hockey west of the Hudson!). Am sure hoping that the NCHC TV contract evolves into something really good since the horses I follow the most will be playing there in a year-plus.

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

As I have said before, I really don't know the rules all that well, but I watched the replay of the disallowed goal in Pioneer Vision and looked up the rule. It looks to me like as clear a crease violation as you could hope for. There was no physical contact, but the player in the crease was directly between the goalie and the player who took the shot.

And as I stated before, he can pitch a tent in the crease if he wants...as long has he doesn't impede the goaltender from making the save.

It's a judgement call, I don't believe that contact is required to impede a goalie. It is possible that the official believed that where Woods was did impede the goalies ability to make the save by being in the crease even without contact.

From the NCAA Hockey rulebook: 6-18-c-7-ii

c. A goal shall not be allowed in any of the following cases:
7. If any member of the attacking team (other than the player in possession of the puck) was in or skating through the goal crease when the goal was scored from outside the crease, unless:
ii. An attacking player was in the crease but, in the opinion of the official, was not physically or visually preventing the goalkeeper from defending the goal.
(emphasis mine)

Since it appears that Woods was screening Brittain (visual impairment), in the crease, and not in possession of the puck, it was within the rules for the official to make that judgement call and wave off the goal.

It is possible that the official believed that where Woods was did impede the goalies ability to make the save by being in the crease even without contact. It is also possible (perhaps even probable) that given the quality of WCHA officials, that they have no idea what the rule actually is and just called it however they wanted.

Contact is not required. If a player is in the crease and even visually impedes the goaltender, the goal can be disallowed. I did not see the play, so I am not saying that this was the reason that the goal was disallowed. Since it was a WCHA game with WCHA refs featuring Don Adam, I am sure he "just made (makes) s*** up as he went (goes)."

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

The problem is the rule is subjective. A nightmare anytime a WCHA ref is involved.

Re: WCHA First Round - Denver and Wisconsin in thin air

Sounds like you're a minority of one Chuck. Time to move on.

Being in the majority does not make one right, nor does being in the minority make one incorrect with regards to the written rules.
