WCHA 21-22 Season

Shootout before the 3 on 3....interesting.

Correct. I don't at all like 3 on 3 for the college game. End with a tie, do a coin toss, play 5 on 5 for a short interval, whatever, but 3 on 3 will benefit only a very small collection of elite teams. Someone want to start a poll on the forum's preferred tiebreak system?

This week...

MSU at St. Cloud If MSU wants to make a move, this weekend has to be that start. They could jump the Tommies with the OSU sweep and they will have played 2 less games.
OSU at Tommies First place OSU gets all 4 of the Tommy games before Thanksgiving. Interesting. Sweep.
BSU at UW Second place WI sweeps. Will they ever catch OSU? Wink.
Bye at UM UM will have a strong goaltending performance this weekend, but just a split for them. Smile.
Bye at UMD Are there ay UMD fans on the site to have a little fun with? Sad.

Honestly the Tommies have been darn impressive. JJ is a shoe-in for coach of the year.

Leave it to the UM to lose on the bye week. This loss being on the recruiting front as the younger Dunne sister (Joy) has committed to the Muzzinator for 2023. No question she was a target for Minnesota's staff.

- MSU, OSU and WI all sweep. St Cloud’s goaltending suddenly seems suspect; Tommies can’t skate with OSU; and BSU just isn’t scoring enough to have a chance. (I should add, if the Beavers find a way to finally hit the back of the net, these games could be closer than most people expect.)

0-0 Badgers/Beavers is crazy! Badgers shooting % took a hit.

SCSU sweeping MSU-Mankato is also notable!….although I shouldn’t give them credit for the OT win yesterday

Well, St. Cloud was the team who made the move instead of MSU. A bit of a surprise, but I have not seen Kato in the flesh yet and I did like how St. Cloud looked in Madison.

UW won't catch OSU if the lose points like they did in game 1 against BSU, though it was not for lack of effort. BSU looked very good Saturday, I was impressed by their great D, really keeping UW to the outside and clogging up the prime scoring area with sticks and bodies, but not just packing it in. I'd love to know why they did not come back with Hogenson Sunday.

Saw most of Saturday's game but did not see Sunday's game. I wasn't aware that BSU played the backup to Hogenson Sunday. That decision makes no sense.

They played two other goalies besides Hogenson (and neither was Kerigan Dowhy!); the starter gave up four and got pulled, and then the second gave up four more.

Right O. Y'all know I love a good bloodbath, but I was really looking forward to going against Hogenson again. Every tough game makes them stronger. It was good to see UW players get their confidence back.

Another interesting side note on the 0-0 game is BSU has 4 Fr D out of 6 on the roster. Very impressive.

Here is a quote from ThirdTime over on the Harvard thread:
"This may be coming from the dead horse department but after having seen two really riveting games go into OT in the last couple of weeks, the folly of the 3-on-3 format really hit me, pulling the rug out from under of the feet of watching dedicated team play. The decision against allowing either real hockey for five more minutes, or the dreaded shoot-outs (which at least, because of penalty shots, incorporate a familiar part of the game) seems like a cynical way to provide a cheap thrill. Cynical, because in divvying up the OT points it acknowledges that this is really no solution at all to the presumed problem; cheap thrill, because it calls for six exhausted players basically going one-on-one, gladiator style. With this format in place how can the outcome be anything other than a crap shoot? Why deny players and fans the old-fashioned satisfaction of having two worthy opponents emerge unscathed from sixty (or sixty-five) minutes of intense rivalry — also known as a tie."

So we're in mid November and there is only 1 series this weekend?

RIT @ UM. Can UM uphold the pride of the west? Will they outperform the Tommies who on the road had a win and a tie vs RIT? Broom city.

What good can come from this matchup?

UM screws up and, dare I say it, does the impossible and lose to RIT? Disaster.

UM screws up and struggles but wins both games? Near disaster. (I could see this happening in one of the games)

UM does what it is supposed to do and handily defeats RIT? Oh goodie. Maybe they can give out participation ribbons to both teams for showing up.

Perhaps it was a late add to the schedule as a courtesy to RIT when RMU dropped off RIT’s schedule?

anyway, here’s hoping for a disaster.

My list
-Take a step on building solid D play and d zone consciousness and awareness and throw 2 shutouts. I know, RIT may not spend a lot of time in our zone, but last year as we were destroying Bemidji, (while we were taking a break from getting beat up by Wisconsin and OSU), we gave up a goal a game to the Beavers, one of which I recall was particularly bad and typical of modern day Gopher d zone play.
-Emma Conner gets a bunch of ice time and gets on the board. She was a great scorer for Edina and so far she is 0 for 9. I thought she looked promising for a first series against OSU. Hasn’t had much opportunity since. I’d like to see her take a lot of a particular player’s ice time by the end of the year. Although I’ll admit that isn’t seeming very likely at this point.

I guess that’s kind of a short list. lol
