WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Interesting that Cole Huggins is the Goaltending Champion, but failed to make any of the three All-WCHA Teams, while Phillips and Nell both played twice as many minutes...

Purely a statistical award. Huggins had the lowest GAA in the league.

Yes, I understand that, but even when Huggins meets the minimum criteria, I still question the merits of giving him the goalie award when there are two goalies with far more minutes played, and either the same or only marginally worse stats.

FWIW, I would've given it to Nell. Of the three leading candidates, I think he was the most valuable to his team.

Ege on the Rookie team? I'm not quite sure of it but that's cool.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

You have to think Stephen Baylis missed out on All-Rookie because so much of his success was the last 2 weeks?

The two forward selections besides Mackin are quite puzzling to say the least........Baylis and LSSU's Torrel both appear to be more deserving, but what do I know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It probably should have been Mackin, Baylis and someone but both Lucchini and Coatta were right there, tied for 4th in points among rookies.

Why Torrel over his own teammate, Hults?

Gage Torrell of LSSU got screwed.

How exactly is he the one that got screwed?
Freshman (Rookie) Scoring Leaders:
Corey Mackin 9-12-21 ROTY All-Rookie
Stephen Baylis 8- 9-17
Mitch Hults 5- 8-13
Gage Torrel 5- 6-11
Max Coatta 5- 6-11 All-Rookie
Jake Lucchini 4- 7-11 All-Rookie
Anthony Nellis 3- 8-11

Defensemen:
Kurt Gosselin 2- 7- 9
Wyatt Ege 1- 8- 9 All-Rookie
Owen Headrick 2- 6- 8
Daniel Brickley 1- 6- 7 All-Rookie
Connor McDonald 1- 6- 7
Dillon Eichstadt 0- 7- 7

By the stats, it looks like Hults and Gosselin have the most right to complain.

Not sure where you are getting your stats, but Torrel is 8 -11 -19 and Hults is 8 - 10- 18. Mackin is 9-14-23 and Baylis is 8-10-18.

These are WCHA awards so they are supposed to be based on the 28 conference games...
If it was based on all games, Jason Pawloski would have been named the goaltending champion, not Cole Huggins.

Personally, I would have gone with Torrel over Hults on the virtue of his two WCHA Rookie of the Month selections

Congratulations to all teams on a well played season. I thought the lower teams in particular were noticeably better. I would have never expected Huntsville to beat CC for instance, but they did. Good luck on the recruiting trail to all. I did notice that Bemidji in particular has some real good commits coming in.

With the eye test, Torrel was definitely above Hults. That's the problem with voters who don't actually see the players play.

Mackin, Baylis, and Torrell would have been a legit set of choices. But I'm not going to say Lucchini didn't earn it, especially with his 2nd half.

I was so resigned to having no Chargers listed that I didn't even think about that.

Well, ok, then. NO GOSSELIN?! GRRRRRRR!

:D

it was voted by the coaches

Part of that has to be defense, and part because he was only in 26 games, but to lead the league freshmen defensemen while missing eight games, ... okay.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

well done Ferris, on and off the ice.

"Endowments are becoming popular ways to provide reliable sources of funding. For example, Ferris State, in Michigan, announced this month that it has completed a campaign to establish a $1.5 million endowment. That principal remains untouched, but whatever investments it earns go to the hockey team to boost recruiting, or pay for travel and equipment."
