WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Thanks! And best of luck to SCSU, easily the best team I saw this year.

As a Beaver fan, I agree. I thought SCSU had the best puck handlers and were the best team we've opposed all year (and we've played some good ones). I don't know why they struggled lately, but after we swept UMD, I never thought the Bulldogs could skate with SCSU, because we couldn't.

Is it true Mel Pearson got a bonus for winning the GLI with Tech a couple years ago? If that's true, does he get another bonus for getting Tech the MacNaughton Cup this year?

Thanks to both of you. Yes, the boys are solid this year. Lots of skill up and down the lineup. I was impressed by the grit and toughness of both Mankato and Bemidji in the Northstar Cup. Great games.

UMD is tough. We couldn't get much past Kaskisuo. The guy is on fire right now, just in time for the postseason.

Again best of luck to you the rest of the way.

I dunno about the GLI, but his contract includes bonuses for almost every achievement. I believe the macnaughton earned him $8K. BGSUHockey.com assembled a list of all the WCHA coaches contracts.

so you reference the bgsu hockey.com article but didn't refresh your memory? There is no mention of specific bonuses in Mel's contract:

We never received any info about Pearson's bonus program. That doesn't mean there isn't some separate agreement for all of those perks, but unfortunately that wasn't included in the info we received.

Yeah, I didn't read the whole thing from your site but his first contract didn't specifically call out contractual bonuses, it just said they'd be determined as needed or something...

Top 15 NHL Free Agent Prospects in the NCAA
http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/2016/3/9/11182480/top-nhl-free-agent-prospects-in-the-ncaa

3. Chris Nell, sophomore goalie, Bowling Green (#50 on Top 100 NHL prospects list)

The Falcons already have one former free agent goalie starting in the NHL in Andrew Hammond, and Nell could be next. Nell is only listed at 6'1" but he has a lanky frame and positions aggressively, allowing him to cover a lot of net and really cut down on angles. He's developed more consistency in his sophomore season, raising his save percentage from .917 as a rookie to .930 as a sophomore.

10. Dominik Shine, junior forward, Northern Michigan (#83 on Top 100 NHL prospects list)

Shine put up strong offensive numbers this year despite playing in an extremely conservative system. His combination of speed and toughness makes him a versatile offensive threat that can attack the opposition's defense one-on-one off the rush, or grind out tough goals in front of the opposition net. He's also excellent on the defensive end, meaning he can play any role in the pro game.

11. Casey Nelson, junior defenseman, Minnesota State (#85 on Top 100 NHL prospects list)

Nelson has emerged as one of the top offensive defensemen in college hockey over the past two years. He's confident and poised with the puck, and is never afraid to take a shot when the opportunity presents itself. His skating and defensive play is average for the pro level, but should be good enough to give him a chance to show off his offensive abilities and make him a valuable player.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

BG lost its hockey culture in the dark years.

I like how you soften it...the "dark years"...LOL. You mean 20 years of really bad hockey and complete athletic department mismanagement/indifference?

BG sold out games from '75-'91...3,500 every night in an arena that had a capacity of 3,434 at the time. When the team became non-competitive the crowds slowly disappeared. The Big Ten schools still brought in 4,000+ crowds, but many were visiting fans too.

The current administration and coaching staff are slowly bringing the fans back, unfortunately, through no fault of their own, most of the current league members just don't move the needle in NW Ohio like Michigan, Michigan St and Miami did.
If Bergeron keeps winning and the rivalries with Mankato and Tech continue to grow so will the crowds again.

As neglected as the program was in the later CCHA years, average attendance was pretty steady (2,242) from 2001-2002 to 2012-2013. In 2009-2010 (the darkest of the dark), we still drew 2,203.
In the WCHA era, we're up to 2,408. This year and last year both drew better (slightly) than any year since 2004-2005. So there's that.
But so far, "winning" has improved avg. attendance less than 200 per game.
Patience, I know. More winning, and a little realignment to help move it along faster. :D

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

You have to think Stephen Baylis missed out on All-Rookie because so much of his success was the last 2 weeks?

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Interesting that Cole Huggins is the Goaltending Champion, but failed to make any of the three All-WCHA Teams, while Phillips and Nell both played twice as many minutes...
