Vermont Women's Hockey 2017-18

Re: Vermont Women's Hockey 2017-18

Watched the last ten or so minutes of the game. Vermont looked good. Capitalizing on BC neutral zone break downs, being patient with the puck, moving it well. Final goal looked like it was through traffic (will have to watch TTT’s recap), that’s a tough one. Between Vermont, Northeastern, Maine, Victoria Bach and BC, you have me intrigued Hockey East.

Vermont is 3-10-3 in their conference with 28 goals for and 51 against, in 7th place just one point ahead of lowly Merrimack and only 3 points ahead of desparately-in-need-of-a-real-coach UConn. 4 of their 6 wins are against those same 2 teams. Overall they are 6-15-4 with 47 goals for and 74 against. That is hardly what I'd call a good team in spite of their upset wins over the struggling Gophers last weekend and Clarkson in Nov. They couldn't even beat D3-caliber RIT (except for the shootout part of that tournament game). Inconsistent is the word to describe the Catamounts. They are trying to find a way to be a top-half team in their conference but it just isn't happening.

Young team, and the vets have missed some time. Willard missed a couple games, Menches missed like a third of the season, Valkama missed time, Picard was with Canada during the PC series. Plumer told me in preseason that he felt this was the toughest schedule in the country and..yeah, hes right. Also with the RIT game their goalie basically stole that game. It's not a perfect team but one that is better than their record imo

Theyve looked a lot better since the break. Speaking of, Plumer posted yesterday about the teams holiday trip to Montreal for the Theresa Humes Invitational

Was impressed with Vermont in Minnesota and from watching them some this weekend on the bc stream, they played well against bc.

Re: Vermont Women's Hockey 2017-18

Probably the best 60 minutes the team has played this season. Complete team performance. Hopefully Pate's okay though.

Re: Vermont Women's Hockey 2017-18

Another big W, especially with UConn and Merrimack also winning...Cats 2 back of 6th place BU w/ 2 games in hand and 3 of their last 4 games are at home to teams chasing us in the standings. Very much in control of our own destiny.

The huge amount of inconsistency is frustrating with this team. 2nd to last is pretty pitiful based on what the team is capable of doing. Is that where coaching makes a difference or is there just a lot of parity from top to bottom in HE?

I think you already know the answer to your own question. You need enough talent to compete with the top teams and then that talent needs to be well guided. Don't overthink things.

I watched Vermont play five very strong periods followed by one lousy one a few weeks back. I doubt that the coaches told the players to go lay an egg in that last 20 minutes. As for parity, HEA has BC and eight other teams, such that you could replay the schedule and wind up with a completely different order of finish and it wouldn't even be a surprise.

Re: Vermont Women's Hockey 2017-18

Felt like a playoff game out there. Wasn't pretty, but a W's a W. And if this is any indication of how Scobee will fare in playoffs, we got ourselves a money goalie.

Morning Catamounts........in watching the US vs Russia game, according to color woman A.J. Mielescu(?), "Amanda Pelkey put the Vermont program on the map"........maybe it's because I'm familiar with UVM and their hockey programs, going back to when fans threw the Frisbee across the Gutterson ice pregame......Tom McNamara, John Glynn days.......and while I recognize Pelkey's amazing 4 years at UVM, much to UNH's demise, I find that statement just a bit excessive......good luck to Amanda and USA!
