Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

We've gotta get some UVM hockey talk goin here.

Stated in terms of a percentage, rate UVM's chances of accomplishing/doing the following over the next 10 years:
1. Winning a regular season Hockey East title?
2. Winning the post-season Hockey East tournament title?
3. Making a 3rd appearance in the Frozen Four?
4. Winning an NCAA National Championship?
5. Having a player win the Hobey Baker award?
6. Having to hire a new coach?
7. Firing Kevin Sneddon or a subsequent coach?
8. Play a game in a new facility (i.e., rink, arena, multi-purpose facility, etc.)?
9. Begin construction on a new facility?
10. Continue to "study" the possibility of building a new facility?

My picks:
1. 20% (Cats have never shown the kind of consistency over a full season needed to do this)
2. 40% (having a hot team or goalie gets this done)
3. 25% (I'm an optimist)
4. 15% (one of those things where you think "I can die happy")
5. 15% (we're due for another player the caliber of MSL (if that's even possible))
6. 65% (10 years is a long time)
7. 5% (UVM's not "that kind" of school)
8. 10% (I'm a pessimist)
9. 20% (it's gotta happen sometime, right?)
10. 80% (a new facility has been talked about for as long as I can remember)

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

1. Winning a regular season Hockey East title? 5% (with BC and UNH to contend with this is tough)
2. Winning the post-season Hockey East tournament title? 50% (they have already made the Championship game so they can do this)
3. Making a 3rd appearance in the Frozen Four? 75%
4. Winning an NCAA National Championship? 25%
5. Having a player win the Hobey Baker award? 10%
6. Having to hire a new coach? 25%
7. Firing Kevin Sneddon or a subsequent coach? 25% (you never know what scandal will happen)
8. Play a game in a new facility (i.e., rink, arena, multi-purpose facility, etc.)? 75%
9. Begin construction on a new facility? 75%
10. Continue to "study" the possibility of building a new facility? 100% its already going on

My picks:
1. 20% (Cats have never shown the kind of consistency over a full season needed to do this)
2. 40% (having a hot team or goalie gets this done)
3. 25% (I'm an optimist)

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

pardon the erroneous cut and paste of the original blogger....
No problem. With #10, I meant continue to study the possibility and do nothing else--i.e., no #8 or #9. I hope that doesn't happen, but it wouldn't surprise me.

My picks:
1. 20% A new rink would help.
2. 30% (It could happen, I would not bet the farm on it)
3. 90% (We should have a better teams then when we were in the ECAC. Sneddon has proven to be a good recruiter, and we'll be back within the next 10. )
4. 5% (one of those things where you think "I can die happy")
5. 5% (but we are due)
6. 20% (10 years is a long time, but he's been very good)
7. 5% (UVM's not "that kind" of school)
8. 10% (I'm a pessimist)
9. 20% (it's gotta happen sometime, right?)
10. 100% (We have been studying this getting rid of the Gut for years!

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Good news for you guys, over in the Twitter world Girgensons pretty much just openly mocked the Kelowna's GM who thinks they have a chance at signing him.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

He was drafted by Kelowna this June, I don't know a lot about Major Juniors but I assume only one CHL team can have his rights.
Correct. For North American players, their league is dictated by where they are from and they are drafted to a team within that league. For international players like Girgensons, they are selected in the CHL import draft and can be selected by any team among the 3 leagues.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

From USHR:

-- Girgensons, the University of Vermont's prized recruit, has been inundated with offers from CHL teams this summer. Moncton and Quebec made huge offers, with the Remparts' offer reportedly topping the $700,000 package that was given to Angelo Esposito a few years back. Right after, the London Knights (OHL) and the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) pitched in with offers of their own. Girgensons reportedly listened to them all -- and politely declined them all. The native of Riga, Latvia, who played for the Green Mountain Glades (EJHL) before going to Dubuque, will return to the USHL and, as captain, help the Fighting Saints defend its USHL title. With both Matheson and Girgensons in the lineup, coach Jim Montgomery’s team will have a posse of NHL scouts closely tracking them throughout the upcoming season.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Looks like a done deal ...
News Conference Friday in Boston ...
Look for official announcement of a Hockey East doubleheader at Fenway Park ... Saturday January 7th ...
UMass vs UVM
UNH vs Maine

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

That is great news on Girgensons, can't wait to see him on the ice in Burlington in fall 2012!!

Not sure how this Fenway doubleheader is going to be attended on January 7. I guess I will probably make the trek although I have to say the sightlines did not appear inspiring for the NHL game or the BC/BU game two years ago. I suppose that Maine will show well no matter how bad they are post Gus, UVM will show ok despite having no Girgensons this season, UNH will show ok if they can handle the cold. What about zoomass? Will they show?

More curioulsly, will Jack Parker do whatever he can to undermine this event because he and his team is not at the center of this universe this day?

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

I have not begun a countdown but I have had the heat on a few mornings recently driving to hockey in the AM - must be getting closer to DROPPING THE PUCK!!!!!

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

I have read a lot about Girgenson here the last several months, but how good is he expected to be? Is he expected realistically to be the next Victor Stahlberg, or is he expected to be the next John Leclair/St. Louis?

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Girgensons has been projected as high as top 5 NHL draft pick but I believe that has dropped to first round. Comparisons are generally to Peter Forsberg in terms of combination of size, speed, skill and grit/physicality.

That would make him UVM's highest ever draft pick. IMHO we will be lucky if he does not get lured to Juniors, very lucky if plays two years and extremely lucky if he plays three years. Should be a fun couple of seasons ahead.

Cat fans - we need to make a good showing at Fenway despite the questionable sight lines and potentially horrendous weather. Personally I would rather see them play at the Garden where it's warm and every seat has a good view of the ice. But our Athletic Department must have lobbied for this and being a true fan of the program we now need to support it as we don't want future recruits to think the fan base is fickle.

I can't imagine we won't make a good showing. Questionable sight lines or not, I'd love to watch UVM play at Fenway, just because it's hockey at Fenway. Doesn't get much cooler than that. We should get a ton of people from VT and alums from Boston and all other locations in the northeast. In fact, this is a game I'd consider coming up from Atlanta to see.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Couldnt agree more, it was fun once and people got lucky weather wise. Hockey at fenway looks great on tv but i wouldn't want to go this time around.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Hope you all weathered the storm okay. I saw some pictures from where I used to live and the damage is devastating. So sad.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

The damage is phenominal. 35 bridges. 263 roads closed. Entire sections of major state routes vanished. Some of my favorite restaurants destroyed. Killington got crushed, they will barely have a season this year no matter how much it snows. Towns still cut off days later. It will be years and billions to repair the infrastructure. UVM can forget any state help for the new facility now - not that we had much hope from the state beforehand - it's going to have to be a private/public arrangement to get it done for sure now. At least until I'm Governor. hahahahaha

Of course Chittenden County got off with almost no damage other than Richmond and some cars floating around in the Park & Ride there. The balance of the state outside of a few small cities and towns were already marginally surviving economically while Chittenden County flourished. The rich get richer, the rest get clobbered.....

Taxpayers hold onto your wallet, although I do agree that those that were not in a 100 year flood plain that lost their houses and/or most of their belongings do deserve help. If you built in a 100 year flood plain and were not insured shame on you though. Much of the devestation was outside the 100 year flood plain though, it was closer to a 500 year flood.
