Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Comments I made on the HE thread and pasted over here also. The season ends tonight, too bad ours ended weeks ago....

I know nothing about any teams incoming Freshman classes except UVM. But I will make a few comments on who I believe will be their impact players in the class. I'm also shocked that the flamers did not blow up the poster that suggested that UVM had far and away the best incoming class in HE this fall.

Forwards.

Girgensons. From Latvia. Played for Green mountain glades at Gutterson when he came over to the states. Seems like a great character kid. Compared to Peter Forsberg by some scounts. Being considered a first rounder by scouts (draft eligible 2012 I beleive). Put up a point per game at Dubuque this season as one of the youngest players in the USHL. Trying to accelerate one year academically to get into UVM early (which we like because while he will be VERY young and have less impact it probably means we get two or three years instead of one of his services). His father is an international businessman and wants him to go the college route for an education (good call).

Reynolds - about 1.5 pooints per game in the AJHL. The league is fine but he is 20 years old (compared to 16 for Girgensons) so he is on the older side end of the age range in that league which obviously helps performance. But he is an offensive force and a finisher - something that UVM needs. He's likely to be a difference maker with his age/maturity.

Colin Markinson and Forgione are both point per game USHL forwards. I don't know a lot about either of them except that they were both part of the "young commitments" that the program has been using.

Anthione was about .75/game this past season. He was heavily recruited by major junior but decided to stick with the college route. He should be very solid. He was also an early commitment.

Mike Montagna was another early commitment and I believe I heard was a prolific scorer as a youngster but his numbers show significant drop off and his arrival has been delayed. I believe he had seerious injury problems in recent years that slowed his development and led to the drop off and delay.

Kyle Mountain - I don't know much at all but around .5 points/game. He probably has difficulty breaking into the lineup originally but probably competitive with some of the 2010 freshmen for ice time.

so - I think the frosh forwards likely to make the biggest impacts are Girgensons, Reynolds, Markinson, and Forgione with the first two being the most likely to really be difference makers. One thing for certain though, with only losing 2 forwards (Stacey and Downing) from the past season - the team will have a LOT more depth at forward. This past seasons third line will be fourth line next season. I think we can also expect significantly more production from Brickley and White this coming season as the depth and an offseason weight program will help their games. Brickley looked better than V. Stalberg did as a freshman IMHO and I suspect we will see strong improvement. White also has upside.

Defense.

As much as I liked Millar as a freshman, Medvec his last three years, and Lawson in the playoffs as a junior, I think this may be addition by subtraction.

The incoming D are simply more mobile.

Pailiotta is ranked #32 in North American skaters in the mid term rankings. he should be a fairly high draft pick (2nd or 3rd round I would guess).

Lukko was drafted last season - although by the Flyers where his father is employed. He should also be an impact Dman.

Doerring was an early commitment and I don't know much about him but it's a cool name for a Dman.

I think UVM is the sleeper this coming season in HE and they get even better the following season if they can replace Madore effectively in the net. They only have 4 seniors this coming season with two being important contributors (Madore and Mackenzie).

Despite the debacle of this past season the future is very encouraging with all this incoming talent.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

forgione plays for the green mountain glades and will go to uvm in the fall of 2012.markinson scored 17 points in 58 games for the omaha lancers of the ushl.connor antoine plays for the glades and will also come to uvm in the fall of 2012.uvm would like to recruit another foward and defenseman for next year.montagna is a terrific set up guy (makes everyone around him better)i have seen zemgus play while at the glades and although young, got the full package--gonna be fun watching him play.markinison can outright fly.the future looks bright.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Duluth is national champs! Not that I really care, but it's hard to believe UVM even beat these guys, not to mention by 5 goals. A silver lining in a horrible 6 win season:rolleyes:

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Huh?
Did I miss something?

Oh, was just sayin that UVM beat Duluth earlier this year (the team that just won the national title) in the regular season 7-2, and that it was a silver lining in a season full of disappointment and let down for UVM fans (with only 6 in conference wins and 8 total wins all year)

Not this year ... Vermont beat them 5-2 in the New Years Tournament in the '09-'10 season ... didn't play them this year!

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

NHL Playoffs start with 5 Catamount Alumni playing for the cup.

For all the records Thomas set at UVM, nice to see him set an NHL record. Has to be a shoe in for Vezina this season. With St. Louis second in scoring and Thomas doing so well, does this help recruiting despite the length of time since they graduated? Or does for example, Stalberg or Mitchell help more ?

Also of note D recruit M. Paliotta ranked 86 in the final rankings of N.American skaters.

Woops! my bad, crazy how all the years blend together:o Great to see Thomas set the single season record (well, since they've kept record since 1983). Another first round matchup with the canadiens...great rivalry, but the canadiens are such a boring team to watch...sigh....

Two things a.) I can't believe Marshall isn't more productive on the score sheet. Good speed , good hands, lots of energy but 4-5 goals in 3 years now... and 2.) I think Lenz will be one of the players to really step it up next year.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

I'm looking forward to an announcement about a new building for the Cats.....

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

Besides a few alumni still alive in the quest for the Stanley Cup (Mitchell, St. Louis, Thomas) both St. Louis and Thomas have been nominate for awards. Thomas was nominated for the Vezina again, and St. Louis is nominated for both the Lady Bing and Hart awards. It's really amazing that both of these guys struggled to get a shot at the NHL and then went on to be some of the tops at their respective positions. Congrats to both of them, and hopefully one of them will return to the GUTT with Stanley.

Re: Vermont : Let the offseason begin...2011

I have to think Timmy is going to win the Vezina. Not sure about the other awards for St. Louis (regardless, he is frighteningly good).

Timmy needs to get rid of the porn 'stache, though.

I think he is rocking the full beard now... or it looked during last nights hand shake? But I agree the porn stache only works for Ron Jeremy

It looks like we'll be playing at Minnesota on Friday, October 21 and either Saturday, October 22nd or Sunday, October 23rd:

I'm hoping that Minnesota will be coming to the Gutt in 2012-2013.

Also, 2013 or 2014 UVM recruit Anthony De Luca was ranked as the 7th best player available for the QMJHL draft coming up this summer:

Surprised that no one on this thread has picked up on this ... "Mac" was a class gentleman and one of the most dedicated support guys I have ever known ...

Longtime Vermont supporter ‘Mac’ passes away

USCHO Staff Report • Friday, April 29, 2011

The University of Vermont athletic department lost a dear friend on Monday when Frank McIntosh passed away.

“Mac,” as he was known, was associated with the Vermont men’s hockey program for 31 years.

A native of Burlington, Vt., McIntosh graduated from Burlington High School and attended UVM. His involvement with the Catamounts began in 1978 during Jim Cross’ coaching tenure and extended through Mike Gilligan’s 19 years and continued into current head coach Kevin Sneddon’s campaign.

“Mac devoted 31 years of his life to Vermont hockey,” said Sneddon in a statement. “Players and coaches, past and present, owe Mac a debt of gratitude beyond words. On a personal level, Mac was instrumental in helping me become acclimated to Vermont and helping me run a successful program. All of us brothers of the Gut will miss him dearly.”

“There has been no other person involved with UVM hockey during the past 30-plus years who has so selflessly devoted so much of his life for the support and enjoyment of our student-athletes,” added Gilligan. “Mac’s love for the program and the players was unconditional.”

In 2006, the AHCA honored McIntosh with the Jim Fullerton Award, which is named in honor of the former Brown University hockey coach. The award recognizes “an individual who loves the purity of our sport. Whether a coach, administrator, trainer, official, journalist or simply a fan, the recipient exemplifies Jim Fullerton, who gave as much as he received and never stopped caring about the direction in which our game was heading.”

The UVM hockey team also presents the annual Frank “Mac” McIntosh Most Improved Player award at the end of each season. The 2011 honor was given to Ben Albertson.

Services are incomplete at this time, but in lieu of flowers, donations in McIntosh’s name can be made to Turning Point Center of Chittenden County, 191 Bank Street, Suite 2, Burlington, VT 05401.

Very sad, indeed. I MAY have seen him on Across the Fence a couple times while growing up, but I'm not sure. I wish to extend my sympathies, as well.
