Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

My biggest question about what to expect from Vermont stems from their only previous game, the exhibition against the U-18 team. Were there lots of players that were injured or sick, did the regulars not get any ice time, or what? I agree with the comments about not looking past any team (especially given the Gophers' history the past few years) but Vermont not being able to take that game seems to bode well for Minnesota this weekend.

One of our top two forwards didn't play against the U-18 and two of our other top six didn't play. Not sure of their status for this weekend.

Yeah I don't think you can really tell how a team is going to be after just one exhibition game, I'm sure Vermont will come out strong and be a tough test for us. The Gophers should not take these games lightly, NC games usually have huge implications at the end of the year.
Oh, I know better than to assume that the performance of a team in an exhibition game necessarily means too much, but it can still be some sort of indication.

Thanks for the info. Missing several of the top 5 or 6 players in the lineup can definitely create some problems, regardless of the opponent.

Hoping for a couiple good games this weekend.

The roadtrip to tUMD was fun, but I am looking forward to my first home game of the year tonight:)

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

It's been a life-long dream of mine to see. Thanks for the tips on other things to do when there :)

There's plenty to do for a weekend in Burlington, it's by far the best road trip for a non-Boston Hockey East team, definitely make the trip if you can. There's Magic Hat, B&J (you can take a snowshoe tour around the factory area!), Lake Placid, the waterfront, and on top of that, a walk through the downtown Burlington area will expose you to some very, very, very odd things you've never seen before. When BU was there a couple of years ago there was a February Mardi Gras parade, complete with a tie dye school bus blasting techno Where's Waldo music, and people wearing tie dyed Where's Waldo costumes. I couldn't make that up if I tried. And yes, try the syrup, it's heavenly.

Wow. This is looking like a WCHA thread where all the rivals not playing in the game being discussed come in and snipe at each other. :D
Welcome to UVM game threads, they inevitably are UVM/actual opponent/UMass-LOL threads. Hey look, now there's a BU fan bored at work here.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

I wouldn't put any faith in an exhibition game. Between all the freshmen playing, key players out, goalies playing only partial games... they are just a mess. The only benefit I can see is putting the rookies on the ice and getting a few jitters out.

Last year UVM lost the exhibition game to the Canadian team. The next weekend ended with a tie and a loss against (at the time #1 I believe, but correct me if I'm wrong) DU. And the loss was a botched call on the refs. It should have been a win and a tie. Not that last year counts, but it illustrates how much you can really tell from an exhibition.

Now, what it all boils down for the Catamounts is playing to the level of their competition. That's UVM. Period. They play ****tey against poor teams and play well against good teams. At least most of the time. When Sneddon gets them to play 100% against every team ....

I can assure you, most Gopher fans are not overlooking your team. You have a quality program, and play in a quality conference. This will be a tough series for both teams.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

With 8 wins last year I think it would be fairer to say that UVM was playing below the level of their competition, no matter who the competition was. And they were not without three of their top 6 forwards in the exhibition game, they were without one of their top 6, and arguably 2 of their top 9, meanwhile TEAM USA was without anyone over 17 years old.....

I hope the cats manage a split but it seems unlikely unless they start playing with some energy, fundamentals, and chemistry. I don't see that happening this quickly with this young of a team.... But I sure hope I'm WRONG

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

Any idea what's going on with the ice? Seems about half the time a skater tries to turn they end up losing an edge. Mariucci looked downright empty at puck drop.

Homecoming parade tonight.

And it's not a "name" opponent, and a 6pm start instead of 7 (rush hour affects the trek to the arena quite a bit, especially if you're coming from the west, which many people do), etc etc.

Ok I defer to you we stink

You guys will be ok. It's a tough place to play, especially for your first game of the season. Big sheet of ice facing a team built for speed. I bet they make adjustments and Sunday will be a much closer game :)

I hope you are right cause it is ugly out there tonight for VT!!!

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

Game 1 Minnesota 4-1

I apologize for a) suggesting Minnesota would only score 4 goals and b) having the audacity to assume Vermont would even come close to scoring a goal. Fo-give-a-ness, pleez-uh.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

I usually hate when the Gophers stop going for it offense, but tonight they went into a "prevent" the right way. They attacked and possessed the puck in the offensive zone for good stretches of time. Much different than the "dump it and let them come at us" approach they have used for the last few years. They instead worked on sound fundamentals and closed it. The Gophers haven't done that for way too long.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

U-G-L-Y !!

The one shining point for the Cats was Vazzano stepped in and played halfway decent. A very surprising and dissappointing outing for Madore. As far as I could tell those were the only two players on the ice.

Did UVM have one good hit? I had to keep covering my eyes and turning away.

I don't know what that was. It was like watching a high school team skate against MN. I only pray that was a wake up call, but one would have thought the US-18 team would have been. Here's hoping Sneddon lights a fire under someone's arse before Sunday.
