Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

You can take a ferries north of Burlington or south of Burlington, or bridges further north or south. The lake is 10 miles wide at Burlington (and 120 miles long) so that ferry closes in the winter due to lack of traffic (who wants 10 miles on a ferry in winter).

I usually go to the southern bridge (currently being replaced but opening shortly) for the ride to LP.

The town is ok but Stowe (40 min from Burlington) is way better for restaurants, accommodations, skiing, etc. But it does not have the olympic history of LP, the Brooks rink, or the bobsled run

Hope you make the trip and enjoy it - except for the hockey results - VT should be good next year if they have goaltending. This is another rebuilding year.

I'm not ready to concede that just yet. We'll have a better idea after this weekend.

We are certainly not over-looking you guys. Hockey East is like the WCHA. Everyone is competitive. I watched the highlights of your exhibition and you seem to have good team speed (from what I could tell) and they moved the puck very well on their power play.

Team speed is more important playing at Mariucci as it is one of the bigger sheets in the NCAA. Should be a really fun series to watch :)

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

After the last few years this team has no business overlooking anybody!

(OK, maybe Sacred Heart, but that's it! ;)

Preview from Gophersports

Last Time Out: Minnesota improved to 4-0-0 on the season after it swept defending champion Minnesota Duluth on the road last weekend. On Friday, the Gophers built a 2-0 first-period lead only to see the Bulldogs come back and tie the game in the second period. The teams entered the final 20 minutes tied 3-3 and it looked like Minnesota Duluth would prevail when it went ahead 4-3 with just two minutes left in the game.

However, Minnesota fought back and Erik Haula scored the equalizer (a 6-on-5 goal) with 44 seconds left in the game. Sophomore Nate Condon then won the game for the Gophers as he batted the puck out of midair to stun netminder Kenny Reiter with 56 seconds left in overtime. On Saturday, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Gophers then scored the next five goals. Minnesota Duluth scored two third-period goals to close the game to 5-4, but the Gophers held on for their fourth straight win. Kent Patterson made a career high 46 saves in each game. Nick Bjugstad had five points (1g-4a) on the weekend, while Nate Condon had four points (3g-1a) and Kyle Rau had three goals.

Minnesota vs. Vermont: The Gophers and Catamounts have never skated on the same ice together as this is the first meeting between the two hockey-driven schools. Vermont is the only team from Hockey East that the Gophers have not faced. Minnesota is 80-47-7 all-time against Hockey East opponents.

About Vermont: Vermont returns four of its top five scorers for the 2011-12 campaign, including its top two scorers from last year in juniors Sebastian Stalberg and Chris McCarthy. Stalberg paced the Catamounts with nine goals and 19 assists for a team-high 28 points, while McCarthy played in all 36 games and ranked second on the team in scoring with 20 points. Connor Brickley is the second highest NHL draft pick in program history, selected 50th overall in the second round of the 2010 draft by Florida. He had four goals and nine assists last year as a freshman. On the blueline, senior Drew MacKenzie and sophomore Nick Bruneteau represent two of the most dangerous offensive defensemen in Hockey East. Both ranked top-15 in scoring among league defensemen last year, and Bruneteau finished the year with the fourth-most points of any rookie defenseman in the conference. Between the pipes, starting goaltender Rob Madore returns for his senior season after posting a 2.98 goals against average and a .907 save percentage last year. Madore was named the team's MVP.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

I know a lot of people looked past Sacred Heart. I didn't simply because I didn't take much from those games other than that the Gophers were clearly the better team and they showed it for once. Which is something the Gophers haven't showed in the past, but still, I didn't take much from the SH series. While I liked what I saw the the UMD series as far as grittiness and showing heart in the comebacks, many of you have noted things this team has to work on. Defensively there are still liabilities that need to be worked on and hopefully will be ironed out after a few weeks here. I have hope but I'm still not completely sold yet. The next three weeks will be telling with a non-conference series against a Hockey East team who I am not looking past(even despite the Gophers' hot start), on the road at AA, and home against sue.

No matter what, I know it will be a fun stretch of hockey.:)

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

The Gophers have been amazingly consistent on offense so far. They have scored at least one goal in all 13 periods they have played this season, including a five-minute overtime.

They have seven goals in the first period, nine in the second, eight in the third and one in overtime.

Sophomore center Erik Haula is tied for second in the nation in goals with five and in points with nine. Jeremy Langlois of Quinnipiac is first in both stats, with seven goals and 11 points, but his team has played six games, two more than most other teams, including the Gophers.

Haula is tied for second in goals with six other players. In points, Haula is tied for second with one other player, sophomore T.J. Tynan (2-7--9) of Notre Dame.

* Goalie Kent Patterson started this season without giving up a goal the first*144 minutes and 35 seconds. That streak ended in the third game when Caleb Herbert of UMD scored at 5:12 of the second period.

Patterson and the Gophers beat Sacred Heart 9-0 and 6-0 the opening weekend of the season. He is the first Gophers goalie to shut out the same opponent on consecutive nights since Adam Hauser beat Alaska Anchorage 4-0 and 1-0 in the WCHA playoffs on March 12-13, 1999.

CATAMOUNTS TALK

Vermont played in the 2009 Frozen Four in Washington, D.C., and led top seed Boston University 4-3 in the middle of the third period in the semifinals before losing 5-4. The Catamounts were 22-12-5 that season.
The seniors on this season's team, like goalie Rob Madore, were freshmen on that Frozen Four team.

The next season, the Catamounts were in the West Regional at the Xcel Energy Center. This time theu lost to Wisconsin 3-2 in the regional semifinals. Madore had 39 saves. Vermont finished the season 17-15-7.

* The Gophers are 80-47-7 all-time against Hockey East teams. They have played all*the HE teams except Vermont.

* The Catamounts have two Minnesotans on their roster, sophomore forward Anthony DeCenzo of Hibbing and freshman defenseman Blake Doerring of Chanhassen.

* College Hockey News recently listed the team's with*top nine recruiting classes for 2011-12 season, in no particular*order, and**the Gophers and the Catamounts both made the list.

* Junior forward Sebastian Stalberg is the younger brother of Viktor Stalberg, a former Catamount who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. Viktor was a Hobey Baker finalist at Vermont.

POLL CLIMBING

The Gophers began*the season ranked No. 19 in the uscho.com preseason poll, then moved up to No. 14 and now to No. 8.

In USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, the Gophers went from unranked to No. 14 to No. 10.

The last time the Gophers were a top 10 team was*two years ago. They were No. 8 in the preseason 2009-10 ratings.

Since the 2004-05 season, the Gophers are 11-3-1 against defending NCAA champions counting their sweep of UMD last weekend.

The Gophers are 4-0-0 for the first time since 2001-02 wthen they won their first six games and started 11-0-2. They finished that season with a 32-8-4 record and an NCAA title.

C'mon, there has to be more to say about this series, right?

Got nothing. Guess I need to reach into the ol' quote bag.

View From The Other Side: Vermont

Minnesota is 4-0-0 on the season, but its opponent this week has not even played a game. The Vermont Catamounts open their 2011-12 season against the Gophers at Mariucci Arena on Friday. Vermont is the only team from Hockey East that the Gophers have never played. Since there is no prior history between the schools and Vermont has not played a game this year, we went to their athletic department to find out a little bit more about the Catamounts. To learn more about Vermont hockey, visit here.

GopherSports: Most Gopher fans probably know very little about the Catamounts, as the teams have never played and Vermont has not played a game this year. Tell us a little about this year's Vermont team.

Vermont Athletics: Vermont returns four of its top five scorers for the 2011-12 campaign, including its top two scorers from last year in juniors Sebastian Stalberg and Chris McCarthy. Stalberg paced the Catamounts with nine goals and 19 assists for a team-high 28 points, while McCarthy played in all 36 games and ranked second on the team in scoring with 20 points. Between the pipes, starting goaltender Rob Madore returns for his senior season after posting a 2.98 goals against average and a .907 save percentage last year. Madore was named the team's MVP and earned the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week award on two occasions.

GS: Who is one player that Gopher fans should pay attention to this weekend?
VA: Connor Brickley is the second highest NHL draft pick in program history, selected 50th overall in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Florida Panthers. The only other UVM player to be taken higher was U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer John LeClair '91, who was selected 33rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1987. The sophomore forward's speed, aggressiveness, and physical play make him noticeable on every shift. The Everett, Mass. native posted four goals and nine assists last year in his freshman campaign.* *

GS: Fill in the blank for us. Vermont will win if....
VA: The Catamounts can produce well in special teams, which is always important in early season match-ups, and if UVM is able to get senior goaltender Rob Madore off to a positive start. Madore led Vermont to the Frozen Four as a freshman in 2009, posting 15 wins and a 2.35 goals against average in his rookie season.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

The more they talk about this goalie, Madore, the more it makes me hope the Gophers poke in a couple goals early tomorrow and never look back. If they can't do that and start pressing a little and/or the defense is suspect, then maybe this guy is able to come into Mariucci and steal a game for UVM.

Was thinking the same thing. We need to get some big bodies in front of him.

Re: Vermont at Minnesota - Oct 21,23 (East Meets West)

My biggest question about what to expect from Vermont stems from their only previous game, the exhibition against the U-18 team. Were there lots of players that were injured or sick, did the regulars not get any ice time, or what? I agree with the comments about not looking past any team (especially given the Gophers' history the past few years) but Vermont not being able to take that game seems to bode well for Minnesota this weekend.

We were missing 3 forwards due to injury, only one of which I'd consider a "key" player. The other two are certainly contributors so, who knows, it may have made a difference. Still a poor showing nonetheless. I'd expect them to be at least very competitive, if not capable of stealing a win.

Yeah I don't think you can really tell how a team is going to be after just one exhibition game, I'm sure Vermont will come out strong and be a tough test for us. The Gophers should not take these games lightly, NC games usually have huge implications at the end of the year.
