Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

pokecheckguy Also anyone see that the kid Ian Spencer who committed before being in the 9th grade is now no longer coming? No harm since he never got to campus but I hope this ends that ridiculous trend. Also reminded because the Anthonie kid on Maine his brother was supposed to come here but is now at a d3 school and hasn't even registered a point yet. Hopefully people learn their lesson and figure out that you really don't know what you have with a 14 year old kid[/QUOTE said:

Well those schools probably have coaches that can judge talent a lot better than UVM. In case you haven't realized UVM hasn't been that good at that for the last few years. Still doesn't change my opinion though.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Maine topples UML... a bit of a surprise. I know you can't make judgements and comparisons quite like that, but UVM is 3-1 against ME... a Maine team that has beat UML, BC, BU... This league is close this year and UVM has climbed the ladder a bit this season to position themselves in the thick of things.

The schedule is odd, UMA has played over half their schedule while UML has played only 6 league games. It makes it difficult to really get a sense of where everyone is. But just because I'm bored after another bye week I decided to try and figure out where every one stood, giving a point for a win and half a point for a tie / total games. Doing so results in this :

1 BC 0.8125
2 PC 0.7222
3 UML 0.6666
4 UMO 0.6429
5 UVM 0.5000
5 UNH 0.5000
7 NU 0.4375
7 ND 0.4375
9 BU 0.3571
10 UMA 0.2727
11 MC 0.2500

Considering Maine has 8 of 13 games on the road where they are not nearly as dominant as at home, it looks like UVM can challenge for home ice. I would say that I would not want to be the team that had to play Maine twice at home in the first round....(even if UVM is the only team to win one so far at Alfond). Tie breakers are going to be a nightmare this year, but the Cats are in the thick of things roughly halfway through the season and that's a lot better place then we've been in for a few seasons now. They need to keep the streak going through the holidays and solidify that OOC... along with picking up some more HE points against NU !!!

GO CATS GO!!!

There are about 4 schools that consistently can do this and even they make an occasional blunder. Its a very risky and sometimes ugly business going after 14-16 year olds and hoping they pan out. BC got a commit from KJ Tiefenwerth when he was 15 y.o. and a very hot prospect. 2 years later York told him that he could come to BC but would never play in a game.. so changed his commit to UMass where he played one season and was told to not come back.

In all fairness, Anthoine and most of the other early commits that UVM got were highly touted at the time and other schools would have scooped them if UVM didn't. Its high risk/high reward.. would have been nice to have Girgensens and I still think Kravchenko is going to be a good D-1 player (though unfortunately not for UVM). Reality is only the very big high profile programs can stockpile enough recruits to play this roulette game with success. I doubt UVM will ever get to that level regardless of a new rink, etc. IMO the coaches went a little too far with younger recruits after making the F4. Is better to have a mix of younger recruits with potential and older ones that are more established and know what you're getting. If a couple of the younger ones don't pan out it doesn't kill a class.

What was the final outcome on the injury to Walls? I think there was talk a back in the thread he might be out for the season?

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I have not heard a thing on Walls but have to hope he is able to get back. Muscoby has been fine but Cats have no depth at D now should there be any more injuries or illness.

Overall, have to be happy with where the Cats are sitting. Way better effort and execution than we have seen in five years really. they are in every game, maybe 2nd PC game was the only one they were not well situated going into the 3rd. That was after dominating PC in a loss the night before.

I'm liking what we are seeing, don't like this layoff though in the middle of a nice little streak. Looking forward to the game and some snow (hopefully) on Saturday night.

Up next SLU...

Tough to tell what Saint Lawerence is going to bring. They started off the year 7-2-2 in their first 11 games but has since gone 2-6-0 in the last 8. They have played some good teams and some not so good teams. The tale of the tape favors SLU by a wide margin :

3.78 gpg average
30% PP
They are taller, heavier, older...

But where they struggle is defensively... giving up 3.6 GA and a PK that is clicking at 76%ish.

With home ice in our favor I have to think the Cats can shut down the Carey's and scrape out the win...

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I want a win since 12" of powder is not walking through that door this weekend.....

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

I disagree about DeCenzo. He seems like a cool enough guy and I thought it was awesome he had such a great game last weekend. As a forward there is a lot of pressure to make it into the line up this year. He's averaging 1 goal and zero assists per season. What's his differentiation that would make the coaches want to get him into the line up? If he continues to play like last weekend then it'll be an easy choice but if he reverts to the form of previous years....? I hope for everybody that he continues to play like last weekend. Heck, keep the 'senior' line together as long as they keep playing well together.

Agreed but you have to look at "risk" defensively too. Decenzo is alot better hockey player than a few others that play all the time, he hasn't been given the same leash and same ice minutes..put him on a line with some smart players and watch what happens.

I like Muscoby over Walls on D but you are correct on depth. Walls took too many bad penalties. Muscoby seems to be in the right place at the right time.

Walls has been practicing and is expected back for the tournament. Kdaddy pull your head out the sand and quit looking at stats...if you had watched the games there were very few "bad penalties" most were for being too physical in a league where they don't like contact hockey. Both Walls and Paliotta are penalized for being real defencemen.

I am going to disagree with you. You adjust to what the refs call. UVM is 2-5-1 when Walls plays and 5-1-1 when Muscoby plays. Penalties matter.

Walls 9 for 18, 2 of those 9 led to an opponents PPG and he is -1 (+/-)
Muscoby 1 for 2. He is +3

I realize you have to take the opposition into account for the games UVM won with Muscoby in but when you take penalties you are off the ice and put your team at a disadvantage. Almost all of Wall's penalties are holding, tripping, slashing.. those are not "physical" penalties those are bad penalties.

I'm going to have to go with Kdaddy here. Walls is in the box a lot. Muscoby rarely. I have not noticed Muscoby much except when he called for the pass when crashing the net for a game winner. I notice Walls all the time going to the box. I was worried when Walls went down but Muscoby has done a nice job. They need more depth at D so they need Walls back, but I'm not wishing him back to get Muscoby off the ice

Should be a good game tonight, hopefully there is good energy in the building despite the cold and potential for snow to start during the game. Looking forward to an important shot at 2 points on Tuesday also

Good game.. DeCenzo, McCarthy, Fallon and Turk played well...and only one dumb penalty....

Interesting that neither of them played tonight. It looked to me like they were rotating 5 D and had an extra forward dressed. Feel he wasn't on the bench either.

Per Ted Ryan's Free Press story on the game ... "Muscoby was suspended for three games for violation of team rules."

As to the game itself, it was a bus man's holiday for me tonight ... my first look at the Cats in person since the second exhibition game way back in October and I was very impressed ... they played great early to get the lead and they played great late to hold the lead. Turk's goal was spectacular as was McCarthy's. The guy who impressed me more than anyone though was Fallon ... he is a very special player.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Ok, I have been skeptical most of the season as the Cats found ways to give up some games that they had control of early on - gift wrapped split to Notre Dame and should have stepped on PC throat that first Friday night. But, they have only had one mediocre to poor game that I have seen and that was the 2nd PC game. I just kept expecting to revert to what we have been subjected to the last four years (with last year being a significant improvement but still a long way from FUN to watch).

However, they are learning how to win and I'm really starting to like this team. Still too narrow on scoring finish, as evidenced by being shut out twice now, but they have really good forward depth and I don't recall seeing such good tape to tape passing with good foot in a long time. And the PK is just massively improved.

Obviously McCarthy has taken his game to the next level, he is simply confident and is becoming dominant. Fallon also looking good, we will be a monster next year like McCarthy is this year. The D look pretty good also, save a few bad turnovers from 4 and 5 who try to do too much sometimes, but they are also the most offensive D we have and are fun to watch.

Should be a fun game on Tuesday. NU is obviously very improved also, kind of on the same trajectory

Cats are #11 right now in RPI on the strength of schedule to it's starting to appear that even the NC games are critical - that is a nice change!

Hamilton (5) had a few plays last night where if he tried it against BC might not have turned out so well...that said he does a very good job stepping up and stopping breakouts along the boards. I can't recall seeing him get trapped and giving up odd man rushes. There is always someone covering when he picks his spots.

As long as he can keep the fancy stuff in check in his own end he will be fine.
