UVM Catamounts, 2024-25 Season, Does Anyone Care Anymore?

Important games for both teams coming up. I don’t expect an easy weekend for my eagles 🦅 in enemy territory

BC knows they cannot let down as every opponent is gunning for them
Thanks for stopping by. Check back next Monday for some info from the HE website that I think you will find interesting.

BC knows they cannot let down as every opponent is gunning for them
Let's talk about letdowns: BC is perfect against Maine, BU (league games), Providence and now us. But, let's take a look at some other BC opponents:
12/6 Lowell shootout win 3 BC 3, shots: BC 35 Lowell 35
12/9 BC 3 Lowell 2, shots: BC 31 Lowell 15
1/10 Merrimack 5 BC 2, shots: BC 29 Merrimack 28
1/11 BC 4 Merrimack 1, shots: BC 41 Merrimack 23
2/14 UMass 3 BC 2, shots BC 39 UMass 29, but after two periods, UMass 22 BC 20
2/15 BC 4 UMass 1, shots BC 45 UMass 22
I think the shot data suggests that either Doug Brown is a mastermind at making adjustments between games or the losses are "letdowns".
Whatever you want to call them, combine them with BU's current streak of 3 straight Friday night upset losses and their loss to UMass and UVM is 6 points out of 8th instead of 1 point out of 7th.

As for gunning, we gun for everybody!

UVM needs 12 points or 11 points including 3 vs. UConn for a mathematical chance at 4th.
Need 10 points for a chance at 5th, 9 for 6th, 8 for 7th, 7 points or 6 points including a regulation win (not 3 ot/so wins) for 8th.
Two points for a chance at 9th.
UVM can't finish last unless they go pointless or UNH gets points against BC.

For 6 points including a regulation win to be good enough for 8th, Merrimack must lose in regulation to P, P, NE and BC. Northeastern must lose two out of three (vs. Ct, Ct & P) in regulation and not get more than two points in the other. Then UVM would win the 2 or 3-way tiebreaker based on regulation record in that scenario.

UVM now eliminated from 6th. Need 8 or 9 points out of 9 available for mathematical chance at 7th.
The right teams won other games tonight. So, 6 points still could get 8th.

UVM still has a shot at 8th, but that's now the highest they can go. To get 8th, UVM needs to beat UConn and BU in regulation, Merrimack must lose to Northeastern and BC in regulation and Northeastern must not beat Providence in regulation. If all that happens, Merrimack would get 9th and go to Gutterson.
There is a risk of falling to 11th. That would happen if UNH gets 5 or 6 more points against Lowell as UVM does against UConn and BU.

I don't see UVM advancing far, but it won't stun me if they do. Ask any Maine fan who saw them over the weekend.

VT is well-coached, has decent talent, and plays hard. What UVM needs is just a couple of snipers, and there you go.

Vermont season ticket holder and Canadiens fan. Brought my camera to the BC/UVM games and took some Jacob Fowler centeric photos: Link to photos

There is a series of photos of Spitserov scored on Fowler at the end.

Fighting hard to finish last! UNH actually improving and showing how to fight to the finish. Tie at BC and beating UML. We are caving to all the good teams. Pathetic. Tired of it.

We beat Lowell too. Unfortunately, we had two games vs. Lowell in November when they were red hot. UNH is playing them now when they're ice cold. UNH has 3 points against the top 4, just like we do. Against the top 6, we have 13 points. UNH has 5. We got hurt when Northeastern's goalie got hot against us and it didn't help that half the team was sick for the second game against UNH.

A little happy alumni news to brighten your day.

Gabe Carriere signed his first NHL contract yesterday and punctuated it with a 35-save shutout last night.

Bucheler is also called up from ECHL and in the lineup last night, so he got to celebrate with him on the ice.

Even if we do better than expected in the playoffs, this could be a rough off season for wiedler with numbers going to the portal. Last year was really quiet in that regard; this year might not be. We really need better goaltending. In past years Carrierre, lekkas and Fallon and the like could steal us a game or two. We need that and don’t have it. Can someone remind what goalies are expected to arrive next year ?

25-26 goaltender commits:
Daniel HĂ©roux, split between NAHL and NCDC this year. 6'2, 190
Aiden Wright, Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL): 20-7-3, 2.56 GAA, .907. 6'1, 179

While we did take a small step forward in scoring this year we took a big step back in goaltending. Nothing personal toward the players but while Vermont has struggled to score for the last decade, we were always at least good in net and sometime very good. I looked back for 10 plus years and we didn't have a single regular playing goalie with a save percentage under 90%. This year our 2 goalies were 0.890 & 0.885. It really showed the last 3 weeks of the regular season when the Cats played 6 straight versus top10 teams. Hopefully the good freshman all return and the incoming players can replace or even improve on the graduating seniors scoring.

I mentioned earlier PJ Forgione committing, which is a sweet story (and a solid depth pickup), but I'm also impressed with some of their other OHL pickups. Cedrick Guindon is 15th in OHL scoring, and everyone above him is NHL drafted or draft-eligible. He is the sort of guy who could be able to help with the scoring problem if he translates. Kingston is among the tops of their division (in a much weaker conference) so a playoff run is possible but not guaranteed to be long.

RD Andoni Fimis committed in 2023, played BCHL this season before he signed as a free agent with the London Knights in December, and has gotten a regular roster spot on the best team in the OHL. Not a ton of points yet but he's had limited minutes. Knights already got the regular season title and they can rest some bigger pieces, so Fimis could get a bigger opportunity in the last few weeks. This year he will likely get the lengthy playoff run experience, even if it's mostly depth. He will compete for a higher spot in the lineup next season with the graduation of Bonk, then he should enroll in 2026.

I think there's an extra opportunity to recruit in the QMJHL that hasn't been tapped into yet for UVM, but that might just be the smaller player pool. UVM, UNH, and Maine in particular could pull a lot of players from the Q thanks to the proximity. Maine and UNH have already started that pipeline with a few commits
