UVM Catamounts, 2024-25 Season, Does Anyone Care Anymore?

Congrats to Maine on winning the HE tourney. I remember back 5-6 years ago, their fans on here were ready to slit their wrists things were so bad. But then you hire a great coach and the rest is history. Ironically, we could have hired Ben Barr, but he didn't even get an interview. Nope, he wasn't good enough to even sniff our job. Instead we hire some (alleged) perv no one had heard of. We suck in almost every metric there is and I don't see an end in sight. At least the soccer team came through with some well-deserved joy for UVM sports fans.

A few guys in the transfer portal already, not sure how much any of them played - Mateo Dixon, Nick Ahern, Mario Gasparini, Eli Barnett, All sophmores...

Eli Barnett got into 8 games, averaged 10:28 TOI, took 1 penalty, was a +6. Last played at Union. He's not there to put up points, but at least one person on this thread liked his progress. I liked what I saw but certainly wasn't a ton to see. Didn't get much opportunity to prove his worth, dunno if he had some sort of injury that no one talked about. Maybe they can ask at Sharks dev camp, or does anyone know of one?

Hope he gets an opportunity to show his worth.

I wish them all well. All four should get much more ice time elsewhere.
Barnett was 2nd on the team in +/- both of his seasons. But, that may be more a result of who he was facing when he was on the ice. His game count dropped a lot from his first year, but he seemed to be steady and promising. But, returners, Henry, Tornqvists, Wismer, Ramsay, Kinsman and Malinski all got much more chances to play. And, hopefully we have one or two strong new defensemen coming in next season.
At forward, we're losing a lot of our scoring with the departure of the five seniors/grad students. Another strong recruiting class and some quality transfers will hopefully grab those opportunities. Continuing improvement of our returners is important too.
At goalie, I'm hoping the expectation of the coaching staff is that the two newcomers are a cut above and will battle for the top spot. If that's not what they are thinking, that's a disappointment and maybe they'll grab someone from the portal.

Rancier jumped in too, but I didn't realize he still had any eligibility. Probably wasn't going to play much next year anyway.
Yes, I think he was injured for one season. So, he still has a covid year. Some interesting names among the goalies: Hasley from Bentley, Clark from AIC and some others. But, I hope our newcomers are strong enough that we have no interest in portal goalies.

David Sacco looks to have some promise, a UNH commit orginally I believe who ended up at Merrimack for some reason. He is related to NHLer Joe Sacco.

None of the UVM players who entered the portal were picked up anywhere. Most surprising to me was Barnett, a sharks draft. He’s now on the roster at university of New Brunswick.

sharks director of player development Todd Marchant said in a recent podcast that it seems the UVM coaching staff never trusted him and he just never got any playing time. last season i think he did have an injury at some point? but this year seems he was totally healthy, just always scratched. he looked good in the few games he got from what i saw. ultimately made for an unspectacular stat line for trying to land somewhere in the portal, and with the new pool of players available... that being said, if there's anywhere in USports to land that could revamp your career, it's UNB. last season they lost 2 games all year, which was a down year because the year before that they did not lose a game. plenty of UNB guys are transferring to NCAA schools, so he could get himself a solid spot to prove himself, maybe transfer back into NCAA for senior year. hoping for the best for him

on the CHL front, you guys jst picked up a spectacular goalie in Jacob Oster. He took Oshawa to back to back OHL finals and was 23-24 OHL Goaltender of the Year, OHL First All-Star Team. He's been one of the top goalies in the OHL for the past few seasons, has the potential to be a difference maker. The last UVM goalie who grew up in the Ottawa area did pretty well, as I recall 😆
