UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Going to be very interesting to see what Sneddon pours out of his blender to start the season.
With so many different style players and an abundance of unproven Freshman/Sophomores, there is not a specific identity to the team.
Will it be a 'small' lineup, or a 'young' team or a 'fast' team or 'trapping' team?
Will the team cut down on the penalties?
Will we ever score on the powerplay again....
Was last year an anomaly? Seems most years we are pretty disciplined....we went from last in Hockey East PIM's to 3rd most...

Can't wait till October 1st......

He will start with some creativity and then after first few losses panic, start teaching shut down d, trap, and hit quotas and Hang on and try and win one every so often 1-0 2-1

And I bet you could turn the team into a title contender instantly.

To me it is smart to bring in as many players as possible as we need to turn over as many rocks as we can to hope to find players that the big schools missed on. No one
tells these kids that they have a spot in the lineup looked up. Its no different than any D1 football school which only dresses part of the team each game. The NCAA allows
Football teams to start preseason with up to 105 players do you think all of them make the team or play? No most never see the field its part of sports on all levels from high school
to pro.

Those with talent and work hard will play and those who dont show the ability to score or except the role they are given wont.

Comparing football to hockey as far as recruiting goes shows a very limited understanding of what makes Division 1 hockey programs successful. I wont go into the differences but bringing in more guys is not going to solve the problem. Now this of course is my opinion which I am entitled to in this forum. Curious: Are you on staff? :)

No just a 30 year fan who doesnt think he has the answer to everything. What team have you ever made a success? its a fair question.

Quiet on the boards.....

No news is good news???

Have you seen the new website? Looks sharp, lots of pictures integrated and I'm guessing it's mobile friendly though I haven't looked. That said, it's been consistently slow and sort of unreliable for me. I haven't heard much news. I'm expecting folks are getting back to school, busy with the 1st week, and not much time to report on things. Twitter has at least a couple pictures since students returning to campus. Looks like players numbers are going at least as high as 40, expected but a little strange to actually see.

catmandoo I always appreciate your insight and believe much of the time you are spot on - too many people who cant take off the greencolor glasses and see the problems or get mad that its not all rahrah land for UVM closing themselves off from other opinions
Someone told me the other day the reason that the hockey roster has not officially added new players to it on website yet is because very strong chance that there will be players who will be inform they won't be on the team this coming year after preseason freshman and upperclassment included.

I agree with your first comment about trying to be realistic about what is going on.
Also, what you have heard about the roster is exactly what I have heard as well. It was suggested that two D and at least 2 F are going to be let go.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Not trying to be a jerk here, serious question. Why in the WORLD couldn't they let kids know before now if they were going to be off the team? To me that just seems incredibly unfair to the student athletes. I just don't see how any good can come from taking that kind of approach.

So what your saying is they should decide who makes the team before they even have one practice? How do you know who came to school stronger or faster and who let themselves go. The preseason is where you see who the players who made the off-season improvement and who hit the weights. The problem is the preseason is too short for hockey, the coaches cant practice with the players until about a week before the first game most years.

So the answer to your question most likely is they don't know yet who will make the team.

Classic junior hockey model. No wonder UVM is average year in and year out. What does BC have, maybe 21 players .

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Totally understand your point Cat Lover, I'm all for earning your way onto the team. But isn't part of the "contract" with student athletes that they have to earn their spot versus a reasonable number of competitors? I wouldn't expect anyone who comes to college to play any sport is under the impression that they have to win a spot every year against an unlimited number of new recruits. Furthermore, why would you bring in so many guys at positions where you already have people unless you think certain guys aren't going to make it? If they've told some kids they are unlikely to make the team but they are welcome to compete for a spot that's one thing, but if they are just bringing in new recruits with the intention of forcing kids out and not being forthright about it, I'd have a big problem with that. Of course I have no idea how they are handling it, so hopefully they are doing it the right way.

how would you feel as a player who was recruited to come to school, enrolled are in classes right now perhaps even given some scholarship moneys then told sorry you didnt make it because we intentionally overloaded roster and now we want to trim it how would you feel as a parent this happen to your players? a prep or junior coach if this happen to one of your players?
It reek of poor planning and honestly poor taste from Sneddon and company because they cannot manage their own roster or even develop kids or even be realistic to some and tell others to leave which i dont agree with but they could have done this in april for returning players and for incoming players defer a year
You can keep defending it all you want but if this stuff of cutting guys who you've annouced as recruits and said "thank you to these coaches who develop them" - trying to play their junior coaches then you go ahead and cut a few...well guess what you probably cannot go back to that well and it seem to mee that Sneddon and Wallyworlds wells have been dried by promising the world to marginal players then recruiting right over them because they didnt win and at no point seems to be a reflection on the coaching and development and talent management being the problem.

11 D and 19 F
Those numbers cannot work.
12 players in the stands for every game?
Should be 8 or 9 D and 15 or 16 F.
Something has to give.
