UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Classic junior hockey model. No wonder UVM is average year in and year out. What does BC have, maybe 21 players .

Yeah but usually 12-15 of those guys are NHL draft picks makes it easy not to need anyone else. Also most are prob on full-rides.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

how would you feel as a player who was recruited to come to school, enrolled are in classes right now perhaps even given some scholarship moneys then told sorry you didnt make it because we intentionally overloaded roster and now we want to trim it how would you feel as a parent this happen to your players? a prep or junior coach if this happen to one of your players?
It reek of poor planning and honestly poor taste from Sneddon and company because they cannot manage their own roster or even develop kids or even be realistic to some and tell others to leave which i dont agree with but they could have done this in april for returning players and for incoming players defer a year
You can keep defending it all you want but if this stuff of cutting guys who you've annouced as recruits and said "thank you to these coaches who develop them" - trying to play their junior coaches then you go ahead and cut a few...well guess what you probably cannot go back to that well and it seem to mee that Sneddon and Wallyworlds wells have been dried by promising the world to marginal players then recruiting right over them because they didnt win and at no point seems to be a reflection on the coaching and development and talent management being the problem.

I know I don't like it when they sign a letter of intent to come and then don't. So the door swings both ways I quess.

Why should any player show loyalty when a coach or school won't to them? Can slice any way you want but whole situation is ridiculous. Imagine being recruited to come here and enrolling and for many putting down tuition deposit with the idea you are here to play hockey and then 1 month into school told you're out when there could have been honesty from the start and you could have found school that really wanted you.
Also to comments which say the coaches don't know progress of players because official practice starts in October - myth. They make most these players come to summer school or stay around and train and they might not be coaching them but they know and can monitor what they are doing or be told - D1 sports is year round official practice or not.
Again if any of this overloading to cut players is true its ridiculous new low for Sneddon and Wallyworld and is just one more thing that is going to damage UVM on the recruiting trail

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

also look like someone from UVM clearly read (Wallyworld) this because they added all the newcomers on the roster now
I would still believe the departures happen before season starts though or just magically midseason 2-3 guys are gone.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Well, we know that we have way to many people who are going to be able to dress this year. How many of them are going to be an upgrade compared to last years team?

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Question for the Vermont fans:

How difficult is it to get tickets? My friends and I are trying to plan a trip for the Michigan game at the end of October. We'd like to book our flights now, but I don't want to find I'm unable to get tickets to the game (which is our reason for the trip).
Looks like individual game tickets aren't on sale yet. A few years ago Michigan stopped selling away game hockey tickets, so that option isn't available to me.

Thanks for any help/insight. Also, any recommendations of things to do/places to eat while we are in Burlington are appreciated.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

I'm am hoping many freshmen are more skilled than last years squad.

That is a hope of every team in the NCAA.
However, practically speaking, which freshmen from this bunch will make an impact? Colton probably. Lekkas hopefully. Massie maybe.
The rest are unlikely to be game changers just as last year's crop were not particularly impactful (even though they played Lee like he was Bobby Orr and obviously had a deal with Coughlin's agent to have him play). That said, I have hopes for O'Neill.
The coaching staff in its wisdom gave out the letters to an underachieving Senior (Bradley), a talented but selfish playing senior (Puskarich), a pair of earnest forwards who are a 10 on the effort scale and a 5 on the skill factor (Petruzelli and Blanleil) and a senior defenseman who shouldn't be dressing every game (and didn't dress for one game the first half last year) because he has had three years of uneven play, to be polite (Muscoby). So, they will play every game one must assume and take a spot.
So, tell me which freshmen will play and which won't? There were a couple of line up cards submitted earlier, although none for the defense. I will tell you who I think SHOULD play but that will bear no resemblance to what the staff thinks I am sure:

O'Neill Privittera Colton
Coughlin Puffer Puskarich
Irwin Bradley Shaw
Blanleil Petruzelli Bowen

Hamilton Abramson
Phillips Daigle
Ferguson Massie

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

My question is, which of the freshmen are on scholarship?
You don't sit in a player's kitchen table, entice the player and his parents to come play at UVM with a scholarship, then cut him before he plays his first game.
So I would think they would be given every opportunity to perform. If they don't, then they sit in the stands.
You would think the staff knows pretty well where the returning talent is, if they recruited half way decently, they filled the holes.
Agree this is a large assumption, but I just don't get why a recruit would be cut before his first game. This is not BC.
So I think any cuts would come from the returning players.

I think Lodermeier could be a surprise. He adds much needed size, and has the potential to be a finisher.

This is one nasty rumor. Must have been started by someone who really hates the coach!

The notion of cutting a scholarship player before practice has gotten underway is ridiculous - especially if a player has registered for classes. Most scholarship players don't have full rides. Many have 4 for 3 deals whereby they pay for the first year and the scholarship kicks in for the next three years - unless the player leaves for the pros or is told that he won't see the ice except for practice. If my son was on that kind of ride and he was cut before he ever had a chance to show what he could do, I would sue the school, the coach and anyone else involved for at least the value of his scholarship

The whole idea is absurd. Word would get around. It would absolutely destroy the team's chance of recruiting anyone with other options.

I agree, it makes no sense at all! On a brighter note, can't wait to see if Ross is the real deal!

Happens regularly in college hockey. So much skill parity that they can get away with it. It's a very grimy game. Hockey athletes have very few options compared to the other major sports.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Only 1 or 2 of those d-men will crack the top 6.

I agree. Remember this was who I thought should play not who will play.
Lee will get a lot of ice whether he deserves it or not. Muscoby is an "A" and will likewise get more ice then he will probably deserve.
Hamilton is always in the coach's doghouse so who knows about him. I think that He, Ferguson and Phillips may be out or part timers and share two spots. I think that Lee, Muscoby, Abramson and Massie will play a lot with all the remaining D, after whatever cuts may be made, fighting for the last two spots on a game by game basis.

I notice you prefer the 'vets' over any freshmen (except Colton) for the forwards.
Although, I agree with you that those guys 'SHOULD' play, it seems that wont be likely with the recent penchant for playing a lot of new faces.
I think he should let a few of the upperclass lines 'gel' if possible to generate some scoring.... (but you know what my opinion is worth.....)
Also I think that Bradley and JPriv are NOT good on draws and 'maybe' someone else will move into the middle.

I agree with you completely, especially the comment about the faceoffs. Vermont was near the bottom of the pack in faceoff wins and they should be throwing someone in who can do that job whether a forward, or a defenceman as those faceoff losses in both ends, especially on power plays or penalty kills really hurt.
