UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

I wouldn't read too much into Dad Milo's comments. His kid had a bad attitude, was warned and eventually dismissed, apple didn't fall far from the tree. End of that story.

As for Munson, he is leaving for family / personal reasons, that doesn't sound like a Sneddon issue, but rather he wants to be closer to his family. He has a bright career and I wish him the best.

We will still have solid goaltending next year, let's hope the D improves back to normal and offense... well... lets just hope for the offense.

He didn't ask for more money...My guess is that he was simply told he would not play much next year in order to steer him away and GAIN more scholarship money for the incoming recruits that have been promised money and who will save the program..Hello...there is a pattern here. Its not that different from a Ponzi scheme. My guess is the line went something like this: "Packy we just don't see you as a guy that can be a back-up. We see you as a guy that needs to play. We will honor your scholarship and you can attend school but we just felt we needed to be honest (cough gag) with you and let you know you wont play and and we will have 3 goalies in addition to you so if you choose to stay, we will discuss with the assistants how we will handle practice rotations with the back ups".

As to the other kids leaving, I would rather respect them and let them get through school and alow them to inform the public. I can only assure you with 100% certainty there are more coming.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Massie, Jake LD 1997 Daigle, Maximilien RD 1995
Moriarty, Corey LD 1995
O'Donnell, Matthew RD 1995

These are the D who are apparently coming to add to the 7 returnees.

Lodermeier, Klein, Alvaro and Colton were coming as forwards although as referred to above, Colton is trying to back out and will not be there this fall.
There are 5 more forwards that could come this fall but probably won't.

Huge logjam unless he cleans house and that is why what Catmandoo said made sense.....just don't know who.

That is correct. Anyone that is a 1995 Birth year must attend school next year as they have aged out of juniors.

This explanation doesn't make sense. Packy was a proven talent. I mean, under your scenario, why not do what you can to keep him, and let one of the incoming recruits fall by the wayside? Like tell one of them "Gee, we thought we had some scholarship money freed up for you, but that turns out not to be the case. We're awfully sorry."

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Don't know if I'd agree with that. I didn't have a lot of confidence in Santa going into last season, and I won't have any more going into this season. Maybe the new kid can contribute....

Santa had the best numbers of all returning HE goaltenders... unless you are still counting Notre Dame as a member of HE, then he would rank 2nd. Santa is solid, he has consistently put up good numbers. And Lekkas should be fine to step in if needed.

This is more a product of high turnover among goalies in HE this year than Santaguida actually putting up good numbers. D1 average for starting goalies last year was .920 save%, he was at .913, not terrible, but certainly below average.

He finished 8th among HE goalies who played 33% of their team's minutes, and 10th among those who played 5+ games. Not a liability but certainly below average again. Ellis, Demko, Boyle, Maguire, and Munson all turning pro or "transferring" gives you the above interesting fact, but if they are replaced by average goalies (which I expect at least 3 will be) UVM still should expect average to below average goaltending among HE schools next year.

Well, from what I heard Munson did ask for more money. He was the number one goalie going in to next year so I highly doubt he was told he wasn't going to play. He may have been a surprise, but a pleasant surprise. It makes sense for Munson to believe that his stock had risen and that he could go to a better school on a full ride, closer to home, if he didn't get what he wanted and I guess he didn't.
As for other players leaving, that may happen but did not seem to happen as of a couple of weeks ago when the season exit interviews were held. I guess we will see if you are right within the next week or so.

Yes, what you say makes perfect sense. Its not the reality though. See it many programs over and over. if you are the kid that comes in a proves yourself (obvious to everyone) you still many times get bypassed by coaching staffs with different motives and agendas. College hockey is still truly a club and you better be connected. Other sports, not so much :)

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

So was Walls.

Walls was a good player and I liked him a lot. But... HE refs do not allow contact and that was his strength. He had chances, but still continued to take penalties (not really) he didn't adjust and so he didn't play. It's unfortunate, but if we had refs who allowed clean hits even if they happen to be big hits he would be a top D still.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Wow, program is at a new low not seen since the fake hazing scandal by Latulip or whatever his name was.....Time to bring in some new blood. Can Marty St. Louis once again save the program???

I agree. I liked him alot also. But my point here is that Walls averaged near 100 minutes in penalties a year in juniors before he got here including 1 year with 193 minutes. I assume the coaches new that and recruited him anyway. Instead of working with him to tame his game and play within the system like they did with Paliotta (Who averaged more penalty minutes than walls at UVM), they decided the grass was greener and pushed him out. Keep in mind that Walls freshman year the staff was keeping a running total on "hits" so they basically gave Walls the keys to a Cadillac. I have been trying to point this out for years but we wont win consistently if we are constantly cycling through players and not spending the time and effort to instead develop kids or a great 3rd and 4th line of experience and depth. Great programs do that and always have a senior or two that have breakout years during the championship run. Look at Zach Hymans freshman and sophmore years at Michigan...

he would have been pushed out here.

or Kyle Criscuolo, Spencer Abbott, Barry Almeida, Tommy Cross, or Matt Tommasoni just to name a few.

Re: UVM 2016 Off-Season Thread

Well what is clear is that we still have a severe lack in recruiting ability. I thought Michelleto and Gasparini were the problem, and was really hoping "Patrick Wallack" was going to save the day. But all they did was bring in twice as many players as there is spots for and continue to do so. Whats more sad is i actually think Michelleto was better at recruiting then the current crop and special teams has actually gone downhill. PP always was the pits but at least the PK was usually tops...

There are some steps that need to happen

Replace assistant coaches with those that can A.) coach offense and special teams B.) recruit decent players that are good and will show up on campus, players that don't think because they had a good year in USHL they are the next superstar. B.) Put Sneddon on a short leash, get it done or you are gone and stop the crap with the players. As an alum I'd like to think the school has the integrity to honor commitments to players that honor theirs, except the occassional Milo. C.) Build the freaking arena, there must be some EB-5 investors looking for a new scam to throw money at. D.) Lower ticket prices, and sell beer to make up the difference. The Gutt has lost a lot of energy over the past few years, it's not the same when we went seasons without a game that wasn't sold out. I started out 600+ on the wait list when I first signed up, there isn't even a list anymore. D.) Hire St. Louis and Miller to do something, Boyce... Thomas...anything to promote the program.

There is clearly stuff behind the scene, but gawd I hope a Schulman comes in and as a former player puts the program on the track forward. Sneddon has done well and improved the program overall, our expectations are certainly higher, but it is time he steps it up or we find the next level.

You crack me up. Why not add 'eliminate global warming' to the list while you're at it?
