Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I can't confirm this yet but I heard today that STHs have until COB Wed, Feb 20th to redeem their vouchers and buy their seat(s) for the 2 potential W playoff games at $8 per seat per game.
I assume that all seats not purchased by STHs by deadline would go on sale Thurs.

Letter I received today, summarized:

ECAC West playoff tickets, UC men's hockey vs. TBA 02/23/2013, 7pm.

  • Season ticket holders can redeem their playoff ticket vouchers to purchase their designated seat until end of day on 02/20.
  • Prices are: $8 adults, $4 students (any college student with ID) and children under 18.
  • Season tickets not redeemed at the Aud box office by closing time on 02/20 will be released to the general public for purchase on 02/21.
  • Doors open at 6pm the night of the game.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Thanks, Ogie. (Haven't gotten that via snail mail, myself.)

So I need to visit The Aud in person to secure my seats..?

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I'll agree that the UMass-D situation was ridiculous at best, but in both the Hamline and Trinity situations, and you acknowledge that it's the same in Utica, they knew the rule going in. With Hamline, it does get more ridiculous when you consider that the alternative that they proposed was certainly no Madison Square Garden... It was the ri k that they'd used as their home rink for YEARS, but had been undergoing renovations that year. (Think if Potsdam were to offer to host Maxcy Hall this year, dspite having played their whole home scheedule in Massena).

Good post, but I still think that the NCAA ought to be a little more flexible re: those teams that play on rented ice.

I've been to a few D-3 games whose teams rely on local rinks as venues, so I know that Utica is not alone in this situation... And while many of those schools probably face fewer scheduling conflicts at "home" than UC does at The Aud, it's still pretty ridiculous and arbitrary that they aren't allowed to "bid" on an alternative site that is a reasonable distance away. (The Clinton Arena would work for UC, and the visitors would have the same drive to make, as an example.)

I wonder what exactly D-3 is trying to prove, in terms of this mandate..? Is the point that if a school doesn't have their own barn -however humble- it's not worthy of being sited fairly?

So much for nobility.

...impeccable source indicates UC's contract with The Aud does have rights related to this situation...while it will require serious juggling, it is believed they can work it all out if the opportunity to host presents itself...

But for those schools who rent ice, shouldn't it be up to THEM to be flexible enough to make arrangements to have the ice available in the event of a playoff run? Why should the NCAA be so flexible? granted, the mandates are strict, but the schools have to follow them to the letter. If you don't, you're out of luck I guess.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Maybe postpone the NYS HS Championships to Sunday....would work for me.

Shabby, they are Sunday. The semi finals are Saturday, which is why they can't fit everyone in. 4 games (DI + DII) on Saturday with the last starting at 5:45pm. I think they could do it with say an 8:30 start, but it's the 1 hour pratice each team has to have thet would be the problem. UC could have an 8:30am pratice but where do you put the visiting teams pratice? 7:15am?? Will the NCAA let UC skip their pratice AND move the start time back an hour and a half? I don't think so, but you never know. First they need at least a split to even get a home game for sure, IMHO. About the only way this will work is if there are 2 High School teams that are close to the AUD that would agree to play their semi on Friday night. I don't think NYS will let them do it, even if they did agree. The 2+ hours that would free up Saturday would be all the NCAA needs.

If somebody has contractual rights to use the facility, the only thing you can do is ask for their cooperation. If the dates of the NCAA tournament don't change, and the dates of the high school tournament don't change, then this could be a continuing problem if Utica remains at the level of play that they have achieved this year. Future contracts could be written with contingency clauses to permit some adjustments. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the High School folk.

If the situation isn't resolved by the due date for bids to host, then it can't happen. No bid, no game

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Haven't they already put the bids in...what's the deadline ?

I previously said this, "Build a Rink of your own"

Agreed. The NYS H.S. tourney runs on 2 and sometimes 3 year contracts. Up until now that wasn't a problem in Utica. There have been a few other locations to put in a bid to get it, but they were deemed to be to small to host (yea, I know Utica isn't really BIG). You need hotel rooms, resturants, etc. The problem for UC will only get worse if the talk of bringing an ALH team is true. On the other hand, the state really likes Utica to host as it's center to almost all teams that have to travel and it's not a bad rink. The city and reagoin also likes to host, as it's a nice little boost for the economy around here. Not much can be done about this years conflicts and unless the H.S. championships go elsewhere in the future, UC will just have to be road warriors (like this weekend, I hope). It sucks but it is what it is.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Nice hard fought win for the Pioneers tonight. Win or tie or Hobart loss tomorrow and UC takes W title.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I always have made it down to the Aud to watch the State finals when Oswego has been in them. Last year was a beautiful spring day, sun on your face between periods having a "pop" in the parking lot. Hopefully it will be a better final this year, it wasn't even a contest last year!

That would be nice, and I hope your source is right, but I haven't heard anything to that effect around here so far.

It's really nobody's fault if UC has to play that prospective game on the road, though.

You can't really blame UC for agreeing to be a tenant in The Aud- which has greatly helped putting it on the D-3 map -and neither can you reasonably criticize The Aud for agreeing to host the HS championships in this hockey-crazed State... It's a rare circumstance indeed when any two entities are vying for this downtrodden burg's attention; Utica must feel flattered.

I still think that a reasonable compromise could be reached here (such as playing in Clinton), but it seems that D-3 is about as flexible as the Taliban in that regard. I just hope UC will get a decent siting under the circumstances, won't have to bus-it to Adrian.
