Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

What days are the playoffs next week...guessing five vs four for fourth Wed. Then Friday and Saturday nights ? There are HS Section III playoffs in the PM next weekend.
The semis are next Saturday, the finals are the Saturday after that.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Congrats to Gary and the boys for winning the ECAC W regular season!
Job well done- but keep the eye on the prize!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Agreed. The NYS H.S. tourney runs on 2 and sometimes 3 year contracts. The problem for UC will only get worse if the talk of bringing an ALH team is true.

I've heard unfounded rumors of the Rangers moving their AHL affiliate from Hartford to Utica, but that's clearly preposterous, IMO.

Christ, NJ never would have left if there had been sufficient fan-support in the area, and the Devils bailed when the local economy was robust compared to the shambles it's in right now... Even the 3rd-rate UHL (and some other joke of a league) were only drawing 1,500 after NJ left, and while charging a fraction of what an AHL team expects for a seat.

Never gonna happen in this lifetime, I promise you.

Fishman- While i dont disagree...trust me when I tell you I KNOW that the talk is being bantered around...There IS an AHL affiliate that is looking at Utica.

Congrats to the Pioneers for winning the regular season title, however, don't forget it only means home ice advantage during playoffs. Don't forget the last time they won the reg. season title, lost, at home in the playoffs. No one is immune ;)

Gee, Mr. Conner, you sound like you speak from (recent) experience. ;)

If I remember right (and that's a big if) UC won the semi vs Elmira but it was maybe 2 overtimes? The next night they looked totally out of gas and lost to M'ville in the finals. I also think there were a lot of people in that smoked filled room who were very releived as that would have been the 3rd win for UC vs M'ville that year and they had M'ville all but picked for the NCAA's.

Fishman, I really hope it's just a rumor (AHL) but I think it's true. If it comes to pass I don't think they'll last more than a season or 2. Utica has trouble supporting much of anything and DIII hockey is a great fit as there are only 15 or so home games vs 41 for an AHL team at say $25/30 a pop for tickets. Time will tell.

Way to go UC. Keep it up. I booked a room at Lake Placid just in case. Anyone thinking of going should get one too, as there weren't many left when I looked.

While I agree it crazy to think this area can support an AHL team, NJ sold the Utica franchise to Calgary and relocated it to Saint John, New Brunswick to become the Saint John Flames, who then moved to Quad Cities, and then to Abbotsford BC.
NJ supplied only players and coach's to the Albany River Rats as they wanted out of the day to day running of a minor league hockey team.

According to Don Laible who writes a blog for the Utica paper and is also a regular contributor to "The Hockey News."

At this past Friday's Utica College men's game with Nazareth College, according to a source, a member of the NHL's Calgary Flames team was in attendance. We understand that the Flames vice-president of operations toured the Utica Memorial Auditorium and locker room facilities. At this time, the Flames have their American Hockey League affiliate in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. The distance between Calgary and Abbotsford is 1,170 miles. The distance between Calgary and Utica is 1,900 miles.

Also
According to two sources, a representative of the American Hockey League was in the Utica Memorial Auditorium this past Friday evening for the Utica College Pioneers men's hockey game against Hobart. The AHL rep was in accompany of a couple engineers as they toured the facility and took in the game. No specifics were given as to what any of the gentlemen may have been scouting, however with talk of an National Hockey League affiliate possibly returning to the Aud at the strart of the 2014-'15 season, taking in a game of the building's number one tenant would have given them a solid idea of what to expect.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I just looked-up AHL attendance, and OKC is dead-last at 3,500/game. Only 5 of the 30 AHL teams average 3,700 or fewer fans, so The Aud would have to sell-out every night just to be #24.

While I won't dispute that somebody is looking at The Aud (I have no way of knowing) I do agree with everyone that Utica is not gonna cut it as an AHL town. It's population is a mere 62K, and probably half of those people are on government-assistance. Who's going to pony-up $15-$40 per game around here? (It's not like buying a $6 ticket to see Naz for a cheap date on a Friday night.)

I sure won't, and I wouldn't even go if it was free.

Minor-league pro teams are just stepping-stones for the players; they (understandably) couldn't possibly care less about anything other than getting promoted... And there's even more turnover than college teams endure, what with the call-ups and demotions. The fans end-up rooting for the sweater.

I'll take a locally-invested D-3 hockey team every time.

Fishman,
I agree that the odds are not good to retain an AHL team, but boy was it a fun run when we had the Devils!
Pricing will be the key, and sponsorship will be a huge problem.
Ther just isnt that much capital here anymore.
While its nice to remember the old days of the devils, even though the AHL is courting Utica, Todd Hutton is having a meltdown about it.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

FYI and for what it's worth, standing in line getting tickets today I talked to a guy who says the AHL team is a done deal. The 1st season is suppose to be 2014/15 and they are adding sky boxes!!! I didn't know the guy from Adam and I'm not buying it, but he sure seemed sure of his info. To add sky boxes would take major reconstruction and the city and county are both brook, so who's going to pay?? Tickets are said to cost $15 each and with the amount they'd sell it's going to be a long payback period. Anyway, it helped pass the hour and a half time waiting to buy tickets. Hope he's wrong because somebody is going to get stiffed in this deal, and I'm thinking it's the taxpayers again.

Hey fishman, have you fished those brooks? ;)

Binghamton and Glens Falls both have arenas that are similar in size to Utica and they each have held AHL franchises in a couple different stints.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Benny,
The City is on the hook for NOTHING.
The Aud authority has no funding from the City.
Whoever told you that was dead wrong.
