Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Just to clear up one thing on behalf of the Cardinals.....Manhattanville was a guest at one of our Cardinal Classic's one year way back and we vowed that they would never invite or play that team again due to their coaches' *****ing and complaining about EVERYTHING!! Not to mention their on and off ice behavior of players was despicable. Our coach has held firm with his vow not to ever play them again. Nowadays, there just isn't the flexibility in scheduling or any open dates. Our long-standing rivalry with Elmira even had to come to the end. However, I will never forget the unlikely run by Neumann in '09 which knocked us out when we had completely dominated the entire season and had only 2 losses (including that OT loss to Neumann).

It's a great upset and win tonight for Utica, But lets see how fast Utica doesn't go up in the rankings even though they should.

Other than Amherst, which of the top 8 (d3hockey.com) or 9 (uscho) teams would you displace to move them up? One win against a team that is ranked one spot ahead of them (which doesn't make it a "great upset," it does make it a great game), usually isn't enough to do much more than confirm a teams placement in the rankings. I appreciate the passion of the new Utica fans - it kind of reminds me of the enthusiasm of the Adrian fans a few years back. Anybody who is enthusiastic about the game is a good thing.

Utica very well could drop in the polls due to Middlebury. You have to assume they are going to jump Middlebury into the top five or six after a strong weekend in a strong tournament?

Maybe I am nuts, but I didn't see this as an upset...however I agree it is a great win over a good team. I wouldn't sweat the USCHO poll at this time of year (if at all). The reward your really want for this win comes in March (i.e. with a bid to the tourney). Lots of hockey to be played between now and then....

Very true, can't argue with any of that. It's just that Utica is getting high in the rankings (has been for the past few weeks) and we have never been ranked above 7th in the USCHO poll so it's exciting for them to win over a ranked team because that improves our chances of being ranked higher the next week (or I'd hope so).

Also, the only reason I called it an "upset" was because Utica is ranked lower than Amherst, that's really the only reason why... I agree, probably wasn't much of an upset

From USCHO's: Bowdoin

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

That was one oddly-formatted tournament, unless I missed something... I was expecting to see Bowdoin play the other first-round winner, not the loser of that game. ( It follows that if Colby had won their second game, the tournament officials would have had to saw the trophy in half..? )

Anyway, I'm predicting a great season for Amherst, largely on the basis of what I've traditionally seen regarding the quality of competition in their conference. I'll bet they'll duke it out with an apparently-resurgent M'bury for the league hardware. I never got very excited about beating the former in the past, but I really like their team this year. I'm thinking that UC's win over them will be considered a good one at season's end.

One more comment about that game: wasn't Morton a beast out there?

He came to UC as a defenseman, yet his instincts were just too feral for that position... But the reckless abandon with which he plays makes him a ferocious fore-checker. I liked seeing him on the same line as Wetmore, who has the ability to find the space to make accurate centering passes. I think that, over time, they will hook-up for a lot of scoring chances.

One more thing, again: DOES ANYONE KNOW IF SANTIAGO IS HEALTHY??? Thanks!

. . .

The tournament is set up so that Bowdoin and Colby won't face each other since they will be playing each other twice this coming weekend. If Colby had won their game with Salve Regina, the tournament winner would have been decided between Bowdoin and Colby, I believe, based on a tie-breaking formula that looks first at goal differential . .

Don't know off hand if he's healthy. He could be in coach's doghouse for all we know. Charest has been for awhile.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Ray, do you know about any (rumors of) future tourney appearances by the Pioneers?

Bowdoin/Colby always use this format. They don't want to risk playing each other three times in the regular season. If they both won or both lost in the first game they'd have to play each other an extra time.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Pios now ranked #9 (up one) Amherst drops from #8 to #10 and Middlebury #8 from #13.

I haven't seen goal-differential used to decide a two-game tournament since D-1 did it for a while in the 80's... And I've never seen it used when both games in question aren't face-to-face contests in order to decide who advances farther in the post-season.

It's a head-scratcher, for sure. I'm still trying to fathom the quirks of D-3 after 12 years as a fan, and I appreciate you taking the time to help out.

Nevertheless, this situation certainly strikes me as being very odd... But at least Colby and Bowdoin won't have to play each other three times in a week; what a calamity that would have been! (Unless you ask my various cousins who have attended both schools, and drool over the prospect of each and every game between them.) It isn't as though the TV money is going to recede secondary to over-exposure of college hockey, or something.

I just don't get it. A tournament should anoint a winner; that's why tournaments are played.

If you mean this ranking, then Utica is unchanged from last week's poll.

Yup.

FWIW, I had the good luck to talk for a couple of hours with a current D-1 coach a couple of years back, and he laughed out loud at my question as to whether the voters paid any particular attention to any teams aside from their own.

He had a D-1 vote that year, and he had one for several seasons when he was coaching in D-3 prior to our conversation.. What he stressed to me was that he never watched a game played by any other team than the one he was preparing for in the coming week. He opined that "nobody has much of an idea how good anyone is, unless he's seen them play in person."

That made perfect sense to me, and if you agree with him, it kinda renders the D-3 poll a waste of ink.

Very strange while looking yesterday pm I saw two polls. One actually had Utica #6 and the other #9. Sorry

There are two polls. One is on USCHO.com - (18 coaches and 2 writers). The other is on d3hockey.com (20 voters, including coaches, writers, and SIDs).

It's like the difference in the old days between the AP and UPI polls in DI football. You can judge for yourself which poll is more reflective of reality.
