Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season
What is the size of the ice sheet at Utica?

What is the size of the ice sheet at Utica?
200x85. NHL size.
Thanks. I heard the expansion to 200 was done relatively recently to help retain a minor league team. Do you know when that happened?
And while I've got you on the phone here, I've read on some of the Utica or ECAC-W (Or Sunyac even) that the ice surface is soft due to humidity in the rink? Truth or other team followers just bitter?
Yes, they expanded the ice to keep them, but they moved to Albany within one or two years. You can see there the seats were cut out to lengthen the ice.Early 90s for the Utica Devils.
As for the ice, it is indeed soft. dont know if its the humidity or not, but it can get a bit slushy. It has gotten better since they put in the new chilling units outside.
If all posted here is true, the ice will be lousy for the game. To go farther into it, the zamboni "cuts" a fine line of the top surface off. The hot water put down is always thicker than what was taken off. So, as the day goes on (four games) the ice will become progressively thicker. The thicker the ice the softer the top surface becomes.
I don't think there will be enough time between games to just "shave" the ice and not put water down. I do think the warmups for each HS game the teams will come out without "fresh" ice with resurfacing done after they go in before the first period. That will help. Saturday is supposed to be in the fourties also. Will be an interesting factor.
It is unfortunate that it will be that way, but Utica did deserve the opportunity to host. This capabilities of this year's Bowdoin team are hard to read. Back in the days of the interlock, I used to know a lot more about the NESCAC teams, but with their retreat into isolation from the ECAC East, it's hard for me to have a measuring stick for them. Their SOS is really suspect, but they really dominated UMD - I thought that was the one first round game in which there was the potential for an upset.
Meaghar plays kind of a variation on the "Torpedo" system, often sending out 3 Ds and 2 Fs (no those are not grades ). If you look at the roster, you'll find a number of guys listed as D-F who seem to be the guys who swing back and forth between the two positions. I wonder how the ice surface will affect that strategy, if at all. The fact is, it will be the same ice for both teams so part of the equation will be who adjusts better. I'm looking forward to following that game after Norwich finally solves Testa. Is there a video stream planned, or should I plan on listening to Ray?
but this is the best and most complete Bowdoin team I have seen. When they stay out of the box and Fenkell is in net,Bowdoin is very good.
The SOS is suspect but if you really look at their season, all 3 of their losses have a fluky feel to them and no team they have seen this year has shown that they can skate with Bowdoin when they are tuned in, I cant really recall a game this year in which I thought Bowdoin was the 'lesser' team on the ice. When they did lose, they beat themselves (Killed themselves with penalties vs Wesleyan, let in 4 goals on 7 shots in the first period vs Amherst and again killed themselves with penalties in the Trinity Fiasco). Of course excuses are like ***holes, everyone's got one, but this is the best and most complete Bowdoin team I have seen. When they stay out of the box and Fenkell is in net, Bowdoin is very good.
Agreed...this team can make some noise, but they need to be focused. All of their losses can be a a lack attributed to a lack of focus.(polarbearfan...you'd recognize me if you saw me..a regular for 20 years till I relocated in 2009)
Wasn't that what Stout took to the Primelink in 2010?So all they have to do is visit a Ford dealer
++++
And note that the P-Bears have been highly disciplined in the crunch time part of the post season (this past weekend and the UMass-Dartmouth game), spending very little time in the sin bin. That's going to be the key versus Utica. But I must say that I'm concerned to hear that the condition of the ice at the Aud apparently ranges from bad to awful, with awful likely this weekend due to the high school play-offs that precede the Bowdoin-Utica game and will likely be generating too much heat. Hard to imagine that poor ice quality will not take away some of Bowdoin's blazing speed.
I've seen both teams play a handful of times this year (including Bowdoin's last 3 games and several Utica games in February). Here are some of my thoughts on these two clubs:
- In my opinion, Utica has the edge with regards to team speed. Believe me, the first time I saw them play live I was blown away - these guys can FLY. It will be very interesting to see if the ice suface takes some of that advantage away.
- This will be Bowdoin's 4th game in eight days and Utica's 2nd game in 20 days. It will be interesting if Utica is rested but rusty...or if Bowdoin shows signs of fatigue.
- Utica's goaltender (Therien) is underrated. You don't hear much about him, but can be very good. Again...will he be rusty after the long layoff?
- Both teams play well along the boards and do not shy away from one-on-one battles. That said, I think Utica is bigger tends to play a more physical style of hockey than Bowdoin.
- I think both teams are very skilled with regards to puck control and movement.
- Bowdoin's D-men will not have as much time or space as they are used to - they will need to move the puck quickly and can not make bad decisions. Based on their play the last three games, they will need to be better.
- I was impressed with Bowdoin's team play in the neutral zone, I think this may be one of the keys to their chances in this game. Their defense will need to have excellent gap control to limit the Utica transition game.
- Bowdoin will need to bring that nasty forecheck every chance they can...the one that forces defenses to beat them 2-3 times before they can break pressure and exit the zone. I think if Utica has one weakness, it can be the play of their defense. They can be prone to bad decisions when pressured aggressively.
- Conversely, if Utica's D-men have the chance to make clean passes on the breakout it will be a long night for Bowdoin. Again - I don't think I have seen a faster team in transition this year (including Oswego, Hobart, etc.)
Overall, I think Bowdoin is good enough to steal this game, but I think I would give the nod to Utica as the favorite going in.

Forgive my ignorance but Is the Aud the biggest rink, seat capacitywise, in D-3 (excluding places like Wentworth that play at D-1 rinks)?
believe it seats 3800Yes. They average close to 3300 a game. Closest to them in attendance is Oswego, who averages around 2500.
