Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

It is unfortunate that it will be that way, but Utica did deserve the opportunity to host. This capabilities of this year's Bowdoin team are hard to read. Back in the days of the interlock, I used to know a lot more about the NESCAC teams, but with their retreat into isolation from the ECAC East, it's hard for me to have a measuring stick for them. Their SOS is really suspect, but they really dominated UMD - I thought that was the one first round game in which there was the potential for an upset.

Meaghar plays kind of a variation on the "Torpedo" system, often sending out 3 Ds and 2 Fs (no those are not grades :D). If you look at the roster, you'll find a number of guys listed as D-F who seem to be the guys who swing back and forth between the two positions. I wonder how the ice surface will affect that strategy, if at all. The fact is, it will be the same ice for both teams so part of the equation will be who adjusts better. I'm looking forward to following that game after Norwich finally solves Testa. Is there a video stream planned, or should I plan on listening to Ray?

Video stream concept is planned and submitted to the NCAA. if they approve, you will hear me and be able to watch simultaneously, free of charge. That is subject to approval.

Good enough. Thanks!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I've seen both teams play a handful of times this year (including Bowdoin's last 3 games and several Utica games in February). Here are some of my thoughts on these two clubs:

Very possibly my favorite post of the year; you covered all the bases there. Nice work.

I watched BC last night on a very choppy stream, but they clearly have good wheels and hands. I loved how aggressive they were on the PK, too.

Certain of UC's D-men were fairly ghastly early-on this season, but have progressed dramatically in their decision-making since then. Still, Bowdoin might benefit from pressuring them relentlessly, as long as they heed the presence of the forward that Heenan likes to send out of his own zone early, to hang on the other blue line. (UC has faced trapping Ds all year, and loves to attempt HR passes when they're available.)

The fatigue v. rustiness factor is a mystery, but I suppose I'd opine that it works more for Utica... Bowdoin's long bus ride and the late start might further contribute to the situation.

My biggest concern is the ice. I hope that by some minor miracle it's in decent shape, because this game has the potential to be a barn-burner.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

If all posted here is true, the ice will be lousy for the game. To go farther into it, the zamboni "cuts" a fine line of the top surface off. The hot water put down is always thicker than what was taken off. So, as the day goes on (four games) the ice will become progressively thicker. The thicker the ice the softer the top surface becomes.

I don't think there will be enough time between games to just "shave" the ice and not put water down. I do think the warmups for each HS game the teams will come out without "fresh" ice with resurfacing done after they go in before the first period. That will help. Saturday is supposed to be in the fourties also. Will be an interesting factor.

Thanks, I didn't know any of that, despite the fact that my ex's father used to drive the Zamboni there. He was a native American, and all he used to tell me about was how fast he drove that thing...

That was what it was all about in his mind, the maniac. :)

Well done Ray. With the latter start time I should be able to get home and watch the 3rd & most of the 2nd period after the Norwich-Babson game.:)

So did he share any family fishing tips???

When he cut a hole in the center ice area "worms" worked well. The holes in the "corners "wallydivers" got some lunkers" . He better be careful as "spring condtions" persist and the ice is very soft now !:D

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I have to beleive that the AUD knows there will be a strain put on the ice and lower the temp of the surface a few degrees to avoid what everyone fears. They host the NYS tournament every year so it's not like this is their 1st time. It's also been much warmer outside for some of the past championships and they've done a very good job keeping the playing surface in good shape. The good news I guess is there's only 1 Section III team (CBA) playing on Saturday, so the crowds shouldn't be very big, which will keep the inside heat down until the college game. I wonder if the NCAA has anything to say about the ice? If they really take over the venue maybe they do.

I'm thinking if enough high school games go to multiple OTs we may get to see the whole game. :D

...And maybe even the last HS game in it's entirety. There is just too much that can go wrong in this scenario.

7 more posts to reach the 1,000 mark. Will the thread close out before tonight’s game or not. Fishman’81 has actually been pretty good lately and maybe we should let him close out the thread. :D

Great game UC!!!!!!! Bowdoin's forechecking was relentless. Congrats to them on their season.
Therrien saved the day after a really shaky start. What a game! See you in Placid!!!
