Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Really? If UC gets the crumbs of ice time after the schedule of the pro team has been made, count me as one of those not happy.

LMAO, I agree with you there. It's a know fact that many people around here think sharing an arena with a "Pro" team is the best thing for the "College" team?
With all the arguments, pro and con, we have to remember that it's not just the Men's team that would be sharing ice time, but the Women's team too. I will not work!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

"Abbotsford signed a ten-year deal with the Flames in 2009 that guaranteed the Flames, who own the Heat, annual revenue of $5.7M. Any revenue generated in excess that number would be split between the two parties. The Heat haven’t been generating that kind of revenue and has been losing money for the past for the past four seasons.

The Flames, on the other hand, have consistently earned money having their team in Abbotsford due to guaranteed revenue. Despite, the team failing at the gate, there was no incentive for them to move elsewhere unless they get as good, if not a better deal in another city."

I can't believe for a minute the Flames will get a better deal from Utica. Other than saving a lot of travel $ this move makes absolutely no sense to me. Unless, of course, Abbotsford has an out clause. I've read they want the Canucks as an affiliate whose agreement with Chicago is up at the end of the year but Vancouver would have to buy an AHL team and move it there.

I give them two years top based on their history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quad_City_Flames
2005–2007 in Omaha, 2007–2009 in Quad City, 2009 to present in Abbotsford

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I'm sure you would be saying the exact same thing if Utica were playing in the championship game next Saturday.

Actually, I would have... If I ever complained about Utica not getting a bid, that would have been in 2005, if at all. They haven't absolutely deserved one until this year.

(Now get to bed; it's a school night, little fella.)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Bottom line is they need a 4 to 8 mil grant to go forward. I don't see any AHL team playing second fiddle to a DIII hockey team, so yes UC gets 1st dibs next year and then it's to the back of the bus if not under it. The end could look something like this. UC plays a few more years at the AUD until they get sick of being shafted, builds their own rink on campus, AHL gets a better offer someplace else and leaves, The AUD brings in the globetrotters and the circus 20 times a year to try and make ends meet (which they don't now) and everyone says what happened. I hope I'm wrong , but with only 4,000 seats and the state of the local economy I don't see how this works. As a hockey fan I'll go to some games but that's what most fans will do, go to some games. They'll need about a 3,000 ST base to have any hope of making it work IMHO. As it is I can go less that an hour to see AHL hockey in 'Cuse, 2 hours in Rochester, and 3 hours to see the NHL in Buffalo (some would say the last is only AHL hockey at NHL prices right now). It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out and maybe I'm just to negitive, but I think if it's not broke, don't fix it.

Man, I hear you...

NJ was averaging 1,800 per game when times were better, and they left... Who in the world thinks that the local economy is going to support $15-and-up tickets during these bleaker days, even when there's the possibility of watching a staged fight?

The entire idea is ridiculous. Utica has a good fit right now, being a D-3 town. I can't imagine that anything more than that will fly around here for long.

I have a feeling "ogie Oglethorp" is laughing his azz off. WKTV had an interview with "Rob Esche" yesterday and it was on again this am. He's a principal in bringing in a team here, "He says...NO agreement has been signed yet" !!!! Alot of money is needed. Think Ogie scammed us !

No. As I said "Bottom line is they need a 4 to 8 mil grant to go forward" Money like that would have to come from the state. Look at cnyjim's link about the history of this team (thank you for that) and I'm thinking the AUD will be better off building up what they have. If you're going for a grant from the state fine. Why not upgrade what you have in play now. A new parking lot is long overdue. Skip the skyboxes and improve the restrooms and ticket office. Redo the old locker rooms and either fix the stage or put more seats in. If you're still hell bent on pro hockey try something that has a chance of working. Someone stated on here that if they sold out every home game (41 I think) they would be 23rd in the AHL in attendance!! Even with all the travel expenses they'd save, how long will they stick around. I'm thinking maybe 3 or 4 years, or, like all pro sports, until they find a better deal. If the idea is to use the AHL team as a lure (go ahead Norm) to get the grant, I hope they give UC a fair deal for ice time and games. Right now all we have are a lot of rumors about what will happen, but UC shouldn't get screwed no matter what shakes out.

It's in Hockey News, I'll save it for ya!:D

This thread on hockeysfuture.com is hilarious:
Utica is a horrible city with 50% of the inhabitants on welfare. People would be interested in hockey if they didn't have to worry about how to make next month's rent.

Abbotsford would love to run these guys out of town:
The Abbotsford Heat will cost taxpayers $1.76 million for the 2011/12 season.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Anybody catch Heenan's comment's on WIBX First News yesterday?

On Saturday’s loss to Manhattanville: “We played well enough to win. That’s hockey.”
Regarding whether UC is still in the NCAA tournament, due to the weekend loss…”We’re gonna prepare as if it’s happening. We’ll practice and keep going.” But, Heenan adds, “It wouldn’t shock me if they screwed us.”

For whatever it’s worth, the Heat's current coaching staff have strong ties to DIII Hockey. Head Coach Troy Ward and Assistant Coach Luke Strand are both UWEC Alumni (both were players and coached at UWEC). So if they're still part of the organization, I think they understand / value DIII Hockey and what it means to the local community.

A couple comments:

1. Mr. monaski needs to proofread before posting. "Teams" when he meant "team's", "effect" when he meant "affect" (a real pet peeve of mine), and he misspelled "Heenand's" name. Also, "etc." should always have a period after it, as it is an abbreviation, even if that period is followed by a comma. All of this is totally off topic, but it bugs me when I can find that many spelling/grammar errors in such a short article on the website of a professional organization like this.

2. While the idea that coach Heenan was trying to express is spot on, there are probably a hundred far more professional ways he could have worded the statement. I'm sure a good number of institutions would object to their coaches being so candid in a public interview as a representative of the school :P

Heenan isn't known for his tact with the media... cost him a job at Union if I remember correctly.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I don't know Heenan, but he is consistently among the least-liked coaches in college hockey amongst his peers.
