Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Update on the beer situation... :D

We went to the women's playoff game tonight, and the taps were flowing, albeit at a trickle... (Attendance was generously estimated at 250 souls.)

I actually purchased a $5 Saranac Pale Ale myself. (It helps to have a beer, watching women's hockey.) ;)

+1

So true :D:p

Typical playoff hockey tonight -- seen it happen a million times -- one team dominates play and can't put the puck past a red-hot goalie. Scola won the game and gets the accolades. I'm happy that the W doesn't have an AQ after tonight's results. Now UC plays the waiting game....

Utica is a lock for pool C

Maybe, but all that worry about a home quarter final is probably for naught with 5 losses. I am sure it would now be on the road anyway. I could see them hosting a Wednesday play-in though. (Is a bid needed for a play-in?)

Home ice (or not) 3/8.

Could not possibly agree more with your first two points.

Scola was brilliant all night long, even when he was lucky. He gets all three of my stars for that one. The horrific condition of the ice in that hot arena really helped him out on many occasions (the puck bounced around like a tennis ball all night, foiling several UC "gimmes") but it came to the aid of Nick as well, though on many fewer occasions. It was a great game, overall. Tense from start to finish.

I'm with you; who wants an AQ, really? During the past few years, the NCAA has done a pretty good job of including deserving W teams... And neither Neumann nor (especially) M'ville deserves to leap-frog UC/HC on the basis of single games that are awarded far too much import. That exact thing might well have happened if Neumann was to get the gift of a free-pass, and then the W just becomes part of the problem... (I wish that the obligatory AQs that exist were awarded for RS titles, not for flash-in-the-pan tournament anomalies.)

I disagree on one point, though: I don't think that Utica will have anything to sweat-out. Their getting in is a lock, IMO... (Hobart might be slightly nervous if Neumann wins next Saturday, but I'm projecting The Statesman as the winner of that comparison before the fact.)

No longer rumor, but fact - professional hockey will once again be on display in New York's Mohawk Valley. An American Hockey League affiliate will be in operation for the 2013-2014 season. The Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League's western conference will be developing their talent in the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Utica last had an AHL team during the 1992-'93 seasson , the final season of the New Jersey Devils six-season run at the Aud.

It all sounds so nice, but where is all this money coming from? You can't get blood from a rock. They'd be much better off spending it on getting some big employer to relocate here so they would have the fans who could afford to buy tickets. Cart horse type stuff and all. I know the Pols will say it will help bring business here, but not if they're loosing money and playing in front of maybe 1,000 paying customers. Of course if it's state money it will be considered "free". Bend over folks, here it comes.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

At the High School games yest I talked to an Aud "official" about the NCAA possibility on March 8. He said they are working with the NCAA, the NYS Hockey Committee, very hard to try and work out "something" so UC can host a game that night. He said that it is a "definite possibility" . At least he didn't say anything "negative".

I'm am pleased we get to see AHL hockey next year, will it work, I don't have the faintest, but, it's the best there is next to the NHL, how could anyone not be happy with the news ??

Current scenario would be an 8 pm start. No later than 8:30.

Really? If UC gets the crumbs of ice time after the schedule of the pro team has been made, count me as one of those not happy.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

To me, the most ominous line is: " Scheduling: At this time, the UC men's schedule is said to be honored for next season."

We will find out what the impact is on attendance - how many of the fans (some of whom are reported to be there just for the beer) will buy tickets to a D3 hockey game when they could attend an AHL game? Will Utica continue to sell out the Aud or will the bloom be off the rose?

I would think?? that ticket pricing would have a lot to do with it,I would imagine that a AHL game is 3x what one would pay for a Utica game??

Bottom line is they need a 4 to 8 mil grant to go forward. I don't see any AHL team playing second fiddle to a DIII hockey team, so yes UC gets 1st dibs next year and then it's to the back of the bus if not under it. The end could look something like this. UC plays a few more years at the AUD until they get sick of being shafted, builds their own rink on campus, AHL gets a better offer someplace else and leaves, The AUD brings in the globetrotters and the circus 20 times a year to try and make ends meet (which they don't now) and everyone says what happened. I hope I'm wrong , but with only 4,000 seats and the state of the local economy I don't see how this works. As a hockey fan I'll go to some games but that's what most fans will do, go to some games. They'll need about a 3,000 ST base to have any hope of making it work IMHO. As it is I can go less that an hour to see AHL hockey in 'Cuse, 2 hours in Rochester, and 3 hours to see the NHL in Buffalo (some would say the last is only AHL hockey at NHL prices right now). It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out and maybe I'm just to negitive, but I think if it's not broke, don't fix it.
