Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season (Part Two)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season (Part Two)

The USCHO Poll got it right. Utica was placed probably about where they belonged. You can't win on hype. You have to show up.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season (Part Two)

These rankings mean a lot to teams that have never achieved this type of success.

This is probably true, with 21 of the 36 SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Championships (Oswego has 9, Fredonia & Geneseo 3, and Potsdam 1 - note that in 1981-82, Oswego & Plattsburgh were co-champions) at at least for me, there is no mystic to them. Now wanting to keep watching hockey, and for bragging rights, the championships are still the big prize.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season (Part Two)

Are we really arguing over team's rankings in the final poll?

News flash...Eau Claire won and has the hardware. Nothing else matters after that.

I wasn't referring to the completely meaningless (and often ludicrous) USCHO poll; I don't even bother to read it anymore. Nor was I referring to any other beauty-contest or even any published metric... I was merely opining re: how the East shook-out, IMO, after all the data was in. Just talking hockey, after the fact.

A championship trophy in their arena's lobby doesn't necessarily mean that a team had the best body of work over the course of a season, but I think that Eau Claire wins every comparison in '12/'13. I never argued against that.

And yet to declare that a team had a better body of work than any other work, you must be, by definition, using SOME metric to arrive at that conclusion. So, as you disregard everyone else's metrics as irrational or biased, you are being challenged to prove that your metric is any less so. Simple as that.

As for your view on the significance of the national championship, here's what I choose to view as an important ranking metric: All teams, despite varying levels of confidence that they can do it, enter the season with the sole goal of winning the national Championship at season's end. In that regard, based on their completion of that goal, UWEC comes in #1, clearly, and the other 72 (or so) teams all come in tied for last place. That includes oz AND utica. ;)

I'm pretty sure that I just said that Eau Claire won it on the ice, and off it.

To refer to the Eastern teams, there's just a little more comparative data to look at lately, don't you agree?

Utica SMOKED Ozz...stop being so bitter or I'll turn into another "fishman" We don't need that now, do we ? BTW 6-0 after TWO periods....UC then played their fourth and fifth lines in the third. I even suited up !!!!!

They sure did smoke Oz. Were you still suited up when the Cortland game came around :).

In all seriousness, my previous post was not a slam, just an observation that season end rankings do mean something to teams/athletic depts/fans that do not normally reach that level. Oswego was inclusive in that discussion in the early 2000's as it had been a long time in between NC appearances. I, like you and most everyone else on here am done with the debate over who was best in the East. Many teams have a lot to be proud of (conference championships, highest rankings, NCAA's, etc) but ultimately all fell short of the end prize.

A woman runs into an old friend with her new baby in tow. Her friend says "what a beautiful baby you have". The woman says "this is nothing, you should see the pictures we have".

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season (Part Two)

I was just bored...but...I am tired of the Ozz posters comin on here and slamming UC.(Norm too :D). I have been on the Ozz sites wishing well, saying great game, good luck etc. Never a bad word unless provoked, not like our one famous fish. Sorry !

I never said they were the best, but they were in the top five in the east at least and had their best season ever. Watch it, or I'll take the Colgate pipeline away !:D

Hey. I told them not to get so giddy about the loss to Cortland!!! :D

I was referring to your early posts accusing us of putting too much significance on a meaningless end-of-season tournament (not your exact words, don't really feel like looking for the post right now... you're not very high on my priority list). I'm just saying that according to the goals the players set for themselves at the beginning of the year, there's only one "comparative data" that means anything. And in that "comparative data" UWEC comes out on top, and everybody else (including all of the eastern teams) ties for last place. Comparing Utica and Oswego is pointless... they both had good seasons, but they both failed in the task they set out for themselves.

The regular season is there to get you into the postseason, the postseason is there to get you the title you are trying to earn. That is the nature of sports (except soccer. I love soccer, but if you want hockey to work exactly like soccer you should just go watch soccer). ;)

I have been away for a bit...what's with the Colgate references...or is it nothing more than nothing...I'm so confused.

Sigh............................

For the record, the UC in UCBadger stands for Utica College.

In Fishman'81, the fish refers to St. John Fisher--which is in Rochester. He is a person who lives in the "greater" Utica area and likes college hockey. Why is he not a RIT fan, you might ask since that it the college hockey team in Rochester? Because they are now D-I and that would conflict with his true love in hockey, Colgate (whose year, btw, was less than stellar).

So what does this all mean?

Its all RIT's fault.
