Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Just out of curiosity here, I noticed in the EcacWest Pick 'em thread that Most people have Utica beating Castleton in the Cardinal Classic this weekend.

Why is this?

Castleton is 3rd in the Country & 10-1-0 overall...

Have they played weak teams so far perhaps?

If memory serves, Castleton lost at the #1 team in the country by one goal, were only outshot something like 26-25, and gave up a 5x3 tally...

They sure look like a tough out, especially close to home, as they'll be this weekend.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

5-2 Castleton looked pretty brutal on the scoreboard, but somewhat less so in the box... (CSU scored 3 PP goals in the 1st and an ENG in the 3rd.) It appears that Therrien gave up 3 on 7 shots, all short-handed, and hit the showers early-on. SOG were 44-24, Utica.

I had to eat my tickets; a family member took a bad fall on some (non-hockey) ice the other day. If anyone who attended would care to comment on what they saw, I'd love to hear your take on the game.

...And I hope UC takes out its frustration on Babson ;) , and at least salvages a split of sorts. (Would love to see the title game, too.)

Had Utica stayed out of the box they would have won the game. I'm well aware of the multiple factors that tilt the tide in hockey, Utica gave Castleton the means, confidence and ability to be agressive and take charge. Castleton's goalie, ability to stick close to the net and their penalty kill proved they are certainly a worthy opponent, but Utica 5 on 5 dominated the play.

Pioneers#1 you are correct - but it needs to be taught/enforced by the coach - on an Emery team, you take an unwarranted/avoidable penalty, the official is the least of your worries.

I agree. Utica has a problem with taking penelties, it KILLS us during a game, and that is a coaching problem as well.

I happened to be looking at the roster today and noticed that Zach Smoot is no longer listed. Does anyone with inside info know the circumstance as to why he's no longer on the team? I thought he played fairly well when he played.

I thought more of him than that; I considered him to have an exceptional set of hands, and to be a real top recruit. He was injured a few weeks back- I saw that with my own eyes- but why he's off the roster is a mystery to me. (It's not an unusual circumstance for the Utica program to have a standout leave abruptly, though.)

I have no idea who took what penalties yesterday. The complete box-score was not available last night, and I haven't checked back... Generally, though, Coffman and Peterson seem to sit for behind-the-play roughing calls more than any of their nearest competitors, and both of them drive me crazy with their selfish, macho BS. Heenan certainly is willing to bench certain guys for whatever reasons, but those two (especially UC's best player, Coffman) seem to dress for every game, no matter what dumb thing they have done lately.

Oh well, it wasn't a completely lost weekend, but it would be nice to see Utica play smarter on the road. D-3 officiating is clearly horrific, and that fact should not be lost on the Pioneers... An opportunity was squandered these past couple of days, but W league games are ahead, and that's where the hay needs to be made right now.

Been dropping like flies in Utica for years and years now...

Heenan really belongs in D-1, where most of the guys aspire to play professionally, have thick skins, and are more likely to endure a "hockey-first" tyrant running their lives.

D-3 hockey is essentially just-for-fun, and his act must wear thin on guys who plan to get real jobs after they graduate. (Case-in-point: Smoot transferred to a club team, FCS!)

While on the subject of missing players, does anyone know Morton's status..?

UC really can't afford to lose a decent D-man at this point.
