Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Wow, didn't realize how dismal UC's numbers were on the PP... Thanks for the research. (No wonder Heenan said that he wanted to go at OSU 5X5 all night long.)

At any rate, the upcoming weekend is gigantic for Utica as far as the at-large NCAA scenario goes. I don't see them catching EC in the W, but beating two top-shelf teams will certainly improve their position for the nonce.

Anything less will result in a "see ya next year" deal, most likely.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

We'll be airing the basketball game that night per our contractual obligations.

However, espn radio Utica-Rome will have it at http://www.espnur.com

If you're interested in video it'll be on fasthockey and unfortunately, not free. There will be commentary provided by Mr. Ted Kreuger. I have the night off and will be downstairs doing my thing.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Heenan scratched a lot of offense tonight. I imagine he wanted a defensive game with minimal penalties. He got both but UC was seriously outshot. It's too bad their third period "prevent D" couldn't squeeze out 3.5 more minutes but the boys looked dead tired out there late after chasing the Elmira boys around all night long.

If Heenan needs to go with the "Defense First" mantra against some flashier teams and grit out the victories, So be it. I liked the overall effort in a great, great game.

That was a solid defensive performance, bolstered particularly by Evan Smith's effort. With my apologies to Therrien, i think we need to play Smith more. He's looking better and better. Even in that Oswego game when he replaced Therrien, he looked extremely sharp. I still think Nick's capable of doing the job, but right now, Evan's the hot hand that we should rely on in these upcoming league games.

That game in Oz could've been a laugher if Smith didn't come in and make 4-5 top quality saves. Right now, it's a race between you and EC to see who will get into the tourney. I think whoever wins will get a de facto auto bid to the tourney imho.

I agree, Smitty is playing too well to sit down right now.

Good game to watch; the play flowed right along with an incredibly low total of TWO penalties called during the entire contest.

The refs were Wears and Biel I think..? I don't ever remember seeing them before - and they let a couple of obvious trips go - but both teams played honest hockey, so a little reciprocal this-and-that constitutes a wash, IMO.

UC sat its two best forwards ( Coffman and Santiago), and EC was the more talented team tonight, but not by much. I'll settle for this tie as long as Utica plays everyone tomorrow, and thumps Amherst. :)

No way he should have gotten 3rd star last night. He put on an awesome display in the third last night. EC could have easily had 3-4 goals late in the third.

Not a bad weekend, all things considered. Coffman missing really showed, but the guys worked hard for 120 minutes. Fun to watch.

I would certainly have preferred to get a league-win v. EC, but a point is a point... ( And I hear that Neumann has been DQed from the postseason, too, which makes 2nd-place/home-ice much more doable.)

Here I go again, but if Amherst is the #6 team in the country, then UC oughta be #1. Clearly, neither is the case, but I'd bet anything that Amherst would've been selected over Utica for an at-large bid at 6:59 today, had The Committee made its choice then... And that would have been ludicrous, after the fact.

Kudos to the Lord Jeffs for scheduling themselves far and wide. (UC should get out more, too. Some of these inter-conference tilts are real eye-openers.)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

If anyone's wondering about Tim's status, i will tell you this. He skated yesterday.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

That's good news for UC, thanks.

Utica has a bunch of guys with pretty good hands and pretty good speed, but their lack of finishers was exposed by Elmira. Having Coffman back for Hobart ought to be a shot in the arm. I can't see them losing to either the Statesmen or to M'ville and still having a shot at home-ice for the conference tournament... They're gonna need to have all hands on deck.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

This promises to be a tremendous weekend. Not just the home and home with the statesmen but rather the elmira vs. Mville series
may indicate if catching second and a home playoff game is possible! lottsa good stuff going on!

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Another excellent night for Smith, Hobart had some real good scoring chances. And congrats to Tim Coffman, tying Utica College’s all-time points record on Friday night.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

UC was a bit lucky to win last night ,IMO. They played a sloppy game; their D was spun around way too many times.

I like Morton's motor and his acumen at forward, but the team might be better-served having all that back at the blue-line again... Adams, Zappia, Baird, et al are all asleep at the wheel far too often. (Slowikowski is the is lone bright spot at D presently; he has improved immeasurably. That kid can really skate now, and makes great decisions. His is the example to follow for the younger guys, IMO.)

I couldn't/wouldn't drive the The Dump for tonight's game, but I'm pretty happy, hearing of the sweep.

14-5... Not too bad, especially considering that uscho has UC's SOS in the top 5. Perhaps Utica will get a bid this year, at long last.

Believe it or not, Mike Slowikowski is actually the fastest skater on the team. they ran through the NHL superskills style drill during practice one day and Slowikowski was the fastest. Other top guys were Santiago and Garbutt.

I believe it.

His improvement in that area is amazing, not only in terms of sheer speed, but also including his stops/starts. I don't ever remember seeing anyone at any level get so much better so quickly.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Very interested in the home and home v. M'ville that starts tomorrow.

UC certainly needs to hold serve in the Aud at the very least. They could survive a split, but a sweep will put them in the driver's seat.I'm hoping MC doesn't get the stellar 'tending they enjoyed v. Elmira this past weekend.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Did UC stink it up tonight, or what?

The D-play was atrocious, Adams being especially awful (he seems to think he's still playing in the SUNYAC), but there's plenty of blame to go around.

The 2nd goal was on a 4 on 2 rush (bad change?), but the 3rd and 4th were instances of M'ville forwards walking right through UC for point-blank shots.

Worst game in a "mental" sense I've seen from Utica in a long while, but give credit to MC, they came to play and flew around like missiles all night long.
