Utica College 2010-11

Re: Utica College 2010-11

#8 Ranking...Is this the highest ever ?? I think they deserve it !

I know that they got up to #8 briefly in 2005 right before the ECAC-W tournament (I believe they were ninth in the final poll before the NCAA tournament). I doubt there was another time they were ranked higher than that, but I'm too lazy to check.

They have been ranked 8th twice before.

OK, let's say you're a fan of some highly successful D-III hockey school, like Plattsburgh or Norwich. Your teams are in the thick of it every year, and consistently get praise from the voters. Take a moment to smile at your teams ongoing success.

Now, let's say you're a fan if a school that doesn't get that much love in the polls. A team that's consistently weak (Northland, Framingham State). Or, a team that was really good 5 years ago, but can't put it together anymore (Concordia MN, <strike>Lebanon Valley</strike>). Or a team that does really well, but are frowned upon for playing in a "weak" conference (Fitchburg State, <strike>Marian</strike>). Maybe you would like to think, "Was my team ever any good?" Maybe you'd ask yourself, "Have we've ever been ranked?" or "Have we ever gotten votes in the national poll?"

Well, because someone asked somewhere, and because I have plenty of time to kill. I took a dive through the poll archives and compiled some lists of all of the teams that have ever been ranked (or gotten votes) in D-III hockey.

These lists use the USCHO D-III poll, and go back to the start of the 1998-99 season (the last season where all of the polls were available). I don't know if this has been done before, but as I said earlier, I've got time to kill.

Note: The number of voters and spots in the poll have changed over the years. The following list reflects that.
Code:
10/19/1998 - 3/8/1999 -- 10 spots, 10 voters
10/20/1999 - 3/8/2002 -- 10 spots, 15 voters
10/16/2002 - 3/5/2007 -- 15 spots, 15 voters
10/15/2007 - present -- 15 spots, 20 voters

(All lists are current as of 1/10/2011)

The following is a list of teams (in alphabetical order) that have been ranked for at least one week in the USCHO D-III poll since the 1998-99 season (along with the last time they received vote(s) in the poll)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

I've seen Utica play three times this year and they looked pretty good. Their SOS is great, their goals for and against are great, powerplay is like 27%. "Could of" beaten Oswego either game. Who I'm afraid of is Elmira, handled UC twice . They must be peaking.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Does anyone know where I can find a "current" national PWR for D3 ? The one I see is always a week or two behind.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

As good as UC looked last weekend (and they looked fantastic on Saturday night), I'm afraid of every one of the remaining games. Like you said, Elmira has had their number this year, but I don't care that Manhattanville is 2-6 in conference this year, those games are going to be tough. With 3 of the next 4 on the road, the next two weekends are critical to UC's chances at a Pool C bid. Lose those away games and the Elmira game might not mean as much as we all hope that it will.

The one thing that makes me feel good about these final five regular season tilts... the goaltending. Both Smith and Therrien have been equally solid between the pipes. Both are getting equal playing time and have been performing at a high level. Smith has been getting the Friday games, so both of his next two starts will be on the road. Lots of pressure there, but I think the rookie can handle it.

No it's up to date.

The games that don't count against D-II teams or Western Region teams are taken out of records and Utica has a few of those.

They do..?Which games?(They all look like D-3 Eastern teams to me,but I'm no expert on this topic.)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

The national PWC has UC at 12-5 and 10th. The Eastern PWC has them fourth and 13-5.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

I haven't looked at the National PWC. The sorting in that is simply by winning percentage, not by rankings. You can sort by any of the criteria, but not by an overall ranking the way that the DI PWR works. The reason is that the weights of the criteria are fungible. In the famous "smoke filled room" (actually a conference call) the committee can choose the weights in whatever manner they want. The only way can be sure that team A will be ahead of team B is if they win all comparisons.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

The number of games played by following teams are different in the National and the Eastern PWC. (All western teams show the same number of games played in the National and the Western PWC)

School regional vs national

Plymouth State 15 vs 12
Utica 18 vs 17
Fitchburgh State 16 vs 10
Mass-Boston 16 vs 13
Mass Dartmouth 16 vs 11
Williams 16 vs 15
Salem State 16 vs 12
Colby 19 vs 15
Nichols 13 vs 12
Babson 18 vs 16

Any explanation or hypotheses for the difference between the regional and the national RWC number of games played? They certainly don't seem to be random differences.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Utica's two games against Franklin Pierce are not considered in the PWR because they are DII..

Thanks!(I thought D-2 hockey was extinct.)In that light,I don't see the point in scheduling a F-P again.

Seeing those games were about on par entertainment-wise with watching a puppy getting spanked repeatedly with a rolled-up newspaper:no fun at all for anyone involved...(And a complete waste of time, since they counted for nothing, excepting the gate and the beer sales at The Aud.)

Hope that doesn't happen again.I'd MUCH rather see the usual home-and-home vs. Hamilton, for example.

This kind of thing happens because Utica, like most top flight programs, wants as many home games as possible. They also want to keep the rides short when they do have to venture out, which can limit your scheduling opportunities. Franklin Pierce will come to Utica and get throttled without expecting a return trip next year because they really don't matter enough to expect it. That will allow Utica to schedule an extra pair of home games next year, probably against another patsy that won't be looking for a return trip.

There is also the possibility that a team backed out on a scheduled set of games (maybe Hamilton) and they took what they could get in the Raven's.

A third possibility is that Heenan wasn't sure his young team would be in a position to challenge for an NCAA bid this season so he scheduled some stiffs early in the season to get them acclimated with the college game and each other.

I'm thinking that this was the case.

The local rag was all up in arms about not playing HC for the first time in the history of the Utica program, but placed no blame, and provided little information as to the details.

I have no idea what happened there, either, but it's a shame.A natural rivalry was put on hold, and a couple of de-facto exhibition games took its place.

Certainly would interest me to know what the deal was.Heenan is an HC grad,so maybe this one time,it wasn't his fault!

:)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

That is the most likely scenario, Hamilton did play in the Pathfinder tournament in Oswego, I think in place of another team, so that might have had something to do with it.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Hello everybody, I was just thinking...has anyone heard of anything new about Utica's application to the SUNYAC? I know that the decision has been put off since May but as always I am betting there's rumors going around about yes or no on the application. I had heard probably no from some people who talked to some people from Utica(mostly due to the renewed strength of Utica from this season so as always why make their conference with only one autobid) but I was wondering if anyone can confirm or deny this. Thanks.

I hear from a couple of UC "insiders" that the majority SUNYAC AD's don't want Utica in. That is understandable, when you consider that Oswego and Plattsburgh already dominate in that league,so why would a mid-level SUNYAC team want to face another stumbling-block..?D-3 post-season bids are a precious enough commodity as it is.

Tell ya what, though:get rid of the AQ's and use an objective set of criteria instead, and there would be no reason for the ECAC-W to disband in the first place.
