Utica College 2010-11

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Here is a little on the future of UC

Now that UC gets to glean what they can from the OJHL(and the rest of Canada),it's gonna be Katy-bar-the-door,IMO.

UC was hamstrung for years, being restricted to recruiting only in the US...Now,they should be on par with Oswego every year.(And that's a good place to be.)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Another great win last night !! Looking like they're for real. Fish...Are you saying UC coudn't recruit Canadians, I didn't know that.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Tell ya what, though:get rid of the AQ's and use an objective set of criteria instead, and there would be no reason for the ECAC-W to disband in the first place.

That would require a total change in the way all DIII sports choose teams for the tournaments. Rules have to be the same in all sports, and that won't change. FB and BB coaches would never stand for that kind of change

Shabby, good to see you lurking over here on the DIII thread. The Raiders must be breaking your heart this year. It was my understanding that Heenan was "encourged" to recuit only US players. I don't know if that's true or not, but he can go after anyone now. He did pretty good if that was the case. '04-05 team was pretty good.
Am I to assume you'll be skipping the Clarkson game in favor of the Manhattanville game tonight? If so, I'll gladly get you a cold one (Oriskany street entrance, take a right, first lager dispensing stand) between periods. Should be a great game. Maybe see you there.

Did not know this.(I don't follow any other sport at this level.)Furthermore,I don't see why it's the case, that D-3 must be monolithic in this regard..?D-1 certainly isn't!

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Hello everybody, I was just thinking...has anyone heard of anything new about Utica's application to the SUNYAC? I know that the decision has been put off since May but as always I am betting there's rumors going around about yes or no on the application. I had heard probably no from some people who talked to some people from Utica(mostly due to the renewed strength of Utica from this season so as always why make their conference with only one autobid) but I was wondering if anyone can confirm or deny this. Thanks.

I am hoping that they do not go. I think they should stay with the quality program. Look at the ranking of ECAC West. Every team is either in the top 15 or got votes to get there (Neuman). I'd hate to see the program suffer by taking a step down. The trouble with the ECAC West (besides a bit of logistics, which is a problem I grant you) is no one is willing to come into the conference and be a Lebanon Valley (ie: good/tops in a league, then a door mat in the ECAC West). That's not a dis of LV, but a tribute to the quality of the ECAC West.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

It's all about the auto-bid in D-3,and the ECAC-W,despite being (probably) the best conference in the country,is "too small to matter",you see...

All grousing aside, nice weekend for Utica!Sweeping Manhattanville on the season is no mean feat, and a first for UC.

(BTW:if there's any doubt that the ECAC-W is a tough conference,please note that M'ville is 2-8 within the league,and 12-0 without it.)

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Auto bid or not, it sure would be nice to see UC get their 1st NCAA bid with this team. Man they worked hard for that win last night. The second goal was a thing of beauty. Wish I could see a replay. The local TV station only showed the puck going in, not the whole play. I don't jump out of my seat to cheer to many goals, but that one was an automatic. 2 games on the road at Neumann, and then the (maybe) last home game with Elmira. That one may see 4K in the stands. Go UC.!!

I see your Manhattanville stats and raise you my Palttsbugrh stats: 7-6 within the SUNYAC, and 8-0-1 outside of it, with a FAR superior OOC Strength of schedule to manhattanville. :)

This argument can go both ways, but I don't think there's any doubt that the ECAC-W and the SUNYAC are the two dominant conferences in the East this year, by a long shot.

That was the sweetest goal I've ever seen UC score, or even attempt to score. I think this years squad has more creativity with the puck than any previous pioneers team.

Ummm,no...They played very similar OOC schedules, and with similar results.

MC beat Curry and Norwich, too,as well as every SUNYAC team they played, and tied Williams. They also topped Adrian, which is at least as good a win as Platty taking down unranked Middlebury. And PSU didn't schedule a single ECAC-W team outside of Neumann(whom they beat 2-1 at Platty.)

The ECAC-W has only 5 teams,yes...But those 5 teams compare very favorably to the top five teams in the SUNYAC,or in any other D-3 conference, clearly, even when we include cellar-dwelling Manhattanville in the discussion.

:)

Yup! 5 wins against SUNYAC teams! 2 wins over Potsdam, 2 wins over Fredonia, and 1 win over Morrisville!

Re: Utica College 2010-11

OK I'm new to D3...have a few questions. ECAC West playoffs...Do teams that finish #1 and #2 in league get a home game then higher seed is home ? Same weekend or a week apart ? Prob 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4 ??

What is Pool A B and C ? ECACW gets one autobid then maybe a "C" pool slot ?? Would these NCAA tourney games be played at home to higher seed in PWR ?? This info must be here somewhere.

I found the info but don't quite understand the Pools yet ?? Why doesn't ECACW get a Pool A autobid ??

Because they only have five teams and the NCAA says a league needs at least seven to get an autobid.

ECAC West playoff format is 4 vs 5 on a weekday and then #1 hosts the winner of that game on the following Saturday with #2 hosting #3 as well. The championship is the saturday following that at the highest remaining seed.

First round: #5 at #4
Semis: #3 at #2, and #4 or 5 at #1
Finals: @ higher seed

Pool A: Automatic bids for conference champions. Conferences must have played for 2 consecutive year with at least 7 members. (The italicized part is why the ECACW has no Autobid. These are the rules across all of DIII Athletics)

Pool B: Bid reserved for Independents and Conferences without an AQ. Eligible members are viewed as 1 group, and the number of Pool B slots is calculated using the same 1bid/6.5teams ratio as the tournament structure itself. Once the MASCAC meets the two-year requirement after this season, there will be only 5 teams vying for the Pool B. NCAA has shown they may be willing to round 6 up to 6.5, but 5 is not enough. This Pool will no longer be used for DIII Ice Hockey after this season, leaving the ECAC-W relying on Pool C

Pool C: At-Large bids for non-Champions. Used to be restricted to Pool A teams, but now includes the Pool B teams as well. These bids fill up whatever is left of the bracket after pool A and Pool B. The total bracket size is determined by the 1bid/6.5teams ratio

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Manhatanvilles in region OOC schedule KRACH average was a 35, Plattsburgh's was a 22.

Doesn't mean a thing,as you must know.

Adrian is #3 in the national PWR and #5 in the poll,at 17-3...The "in-region" stipulation means nothing in this discussion.(There are apparently some quality teams outside the Northeast, right?)

MC beating Adrian is a much better win on Manhattanville's resume than is Middlebury on Platty's,clearly.

I have to think that any objective evaluator of merit would advance MC over PSU based solely on the W/L and SOS evidence, should the NCAA's start today, despite MC being dead-last in their own conference, and Plattsburgh being 3rd in theirs.
